Contemporary American
Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

This is truly a unique restaurant. The food was outstanding especially the mushroom tart and the beef stroganoff. I have never tasted a better, richer stroganoff. The portions are large. Probably a bit too large for today’s diners but we managed to finish almost everything that was served.
The setting is quaint. We would have enjoyed sitting outside and although there were diners out there, we were told they weren’t serving outside that particular night.
The service was amateurish. The young staff were enthusiastic but overly attentive. They seemed to be everywhere and filled our water glasses about every 3 minutes. They kept trying to remove plates or silverware and after a bit we felt like we had to hold on to things or they’d be taken away. It got to be amusing.

Wonderful evening at the Joel Palmer... loved the food, the service was outstanding and we could hear ourselves talk to each other. The menu has two options: a nine course tasting menu (for $90?) or a three course prix fixe meal for $65. We all got the $65 dinner and shared the appetizers. The entrees we tried (rack of lamb, pasta with dungeness crab and beef stroganoff ) were each delicious. .. the deserts were creative and delicious.. warm bread.. fine wine. Definitely a special place for a special dinner.

We had an amazing experience. The prix fix menu was delicious - all of it. Excellent service, attentive but not intrusive. Everyone had a great attitude which contributed to the pleasant experience. The menu was partly based on wild mushroom adaptations - all excellent and innovative. It would be hard to select favorites but the mushroom tart and the bread pudding were real standouts.
The chef visited every table and made sure everyone was cared for. Delicious food, great service, beautiful setting. A must visit if you are in the area.

Received a recommendation to try this place. The service here is terrible. You didn't know who was the main waiter and each course that went by created even more confusion. Apparently silverware is optional here as they serve you bread with no knives for your butter and then want to take your plates away when you are served oysters. Guess you just eat them without silverware and leave on table.

Didn't ask how food was during any portion of the meal. Each time a course was served you didn't see your servers until a whole twenty minutes go by.

Sommelier was nice and greeted us but after we bought a bottle he l disappeared and never bothered to say bye before leaving.

This place is run by a young wait staff that is very incompetent given the type of restaurant this place is pretending to be. Overpriced and overrated. Do not go! Highly disappointed

Every course was magnificent. Mushrooms do indeed go quite well with Pinot Noir! My best advice is to go with an empty stomach to make room for all of the deliciousness.

Lovely, just lovely. This was our first visit to the Willamette Valley and this restaurant was a fantastic way to start our visit. Top notch in every way. The chef owner visits every table and exudes a caring attitude that fills the restaurant and staff with an aura of “we want you to enjoy your dinner and are trying very hard to please you”. It’s a special historical home with delicious food and deserving of your patronage if you’re in the area. Thank you for such a wonderful evening.

Expensive treat, but outstanding as always. Only minor complaint was that they forgot the birthday candle on the celebrant's dessert (95th birthday) even after multiple requests.

JPH is a special occasion dinner venue for my husband and me. The mushroom tart and beef stroganoff were particularly sublime. Service friendly and knowledgeable. Outside ambiance and dinner music were lovely background for an unhurried 2 1/2 hours while we savored every beautifully prepared and presented bite.

We had a wonderful dinner at Joel Palmer House on our anniversary. We ordered the Mushroom Madness tasting menu, and it was all very good. It started with their mushroom soup, which is always superb. Next I had the mushroom tart, and my husband had the escargot. Both were very good, and the presentation on the escargot was lovely. Then we had a pasta with crab and mushrooms. Next I had the lamb and my husband had the duck. Both were very good. And we finished with a trio of desserts, which included a creme brulee, a lavender sorbet, and a chocolate peanut butter truffle. Everything was presented in a lovely manner, and the service, as always, was excellent.

Top echelon dining experience from start to finish. Service was fantastic, food was excellent, and ambiance was perfect.

The staff was attentive, very knowledgeable and helpful, and super friendly.

Each dish was fantastic. Mushroom tart, escargots, and beef tartare appetizers were awesome. The beef stroganoff lived up to the hype; the lamb was prepared perfectly and was melt in your mouth.

Great food and experience. Crazy great food, mushroom risotto, filet with foie gras and beef tartar were all just perfect. Amazing wine list but we just brought a great bottle from our wine tasting from the day. $25 corkage was just fine with us and the staff was fantastic from beginning to end. The Joel Palmer House is a MUST DO if you are in wine country and a foodie!
