I took my husband here for his birthday. Unfortunately, the fireplace wasn't working and there was a private event happening upstairs which is supposed to be nicer than the ground floor, but it was still a very nice experience. Great waiter, really good food (bigger portions than I would have expected!), unique old-meets-new environment and nice find in a neighborhood we don't often go to. We will definitely be back for another occasion so that we can experience the other floor as well.
Went for brunch. Had to ask for cream (milk) for coffee. Had to ask to have music turned down. Hard to get servers' attention. Menu not fully descriptive. Ordered side order of home fries (which were like badly smashed potatoes) not home fries) because omelette description did not include them but there they were ... a big blobby spoonful. Would not have ordered more if known. Beautiful place but none of the staff except for the busboy seemed to care about the customers...just talking to each other.
Food was good. Indifferent salad that we asked to split but we had to do ourselves. Very good entrees, but loud lousy AM radio music in a carriage house setting was awful. Manager was very nice but said management would not let them change it. V empty for a Sunday nite; bathrooms had not been cleaned since lunch shift. Won't go back.
Food was well presented. The deviled egg selection excellent. Octopus good. Hamburger tasty. A little pricey. We were the only ones on the top floor since it was early. Tables very small and cramped - we switched our seats so that one of us was not sitting in the passage aisle from the bar to the dining area. The dinner menu was presented (we were early since we went to a matinee close-by). We gave our order and told that our choice was not available until 7PM. Really? Otherwise, wait staff very efficient and professional.
Went there during a brief NYC visit staying at the Inn at Irving Place right around the corner. We met a friend there and it was a wonderful experience. It was originally a carriage house but has gone through several metamorphoses over the years.
We began with some signature cocktail that did not fail to excite the palate. It was followed by oysters and octopus which were delectable. For entrees, we had sea scallops and a lasagna containing wild boar, pancetta, Piedmontese beef, and thyme.
Dessert capped it off with a chocolate mousse cake.
We would highly recommend it.
We came here to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. I made reservations. The place was beautiful, crowded but quiet. We sat upstairs , as the downstairs area was already full. The food was delicious. Nice sized portions and I'm a pretty big eater. I asked if they had any celebratory desserts (which meant, could you put a candle in it). They were happy to accommodate and they offered it complementary, which I didn't expect. The hostess and the waiters were super nice, and very helpful. It was quite a romantic evening. The only con I have for The House, were the servers. The "gentlemen" who actually served the food. They were extremely abrupt and rude. One even told my girlfriend to " stop talking". The thing is we didn't ask them for anything. Our waiter was more than accommodating. I'm a native New Yorker, born and bred. Abrupt and rudeness usually go over my head. And sometimes people are having a bad day. But for 2 of them to act this way, was totally unacceptable. Had it not been her birthday, and my maturity level , and the ability to write a review about them, ol' boy would have been outfitted in the steaming hot nutella s'mores he served. I usually tip everyone that make my experiences wonderful, even if they only gave me a new fork or poured me a glass of water. Needless to say, I didn't leave tweedle dee and tweedle dumb anything, but a bit of advice. Be kind to everyone. The one you mistreat may be the very one preventing someone from throwing you over a wall! Overall though, The House is very nice.
The food was excellent. We had salads and the scallop and lamb main courses, everything tasted great. Service was efficient, although a little cold. The second floor of the restaurant, where we sat, was lovely. However, we only got there after being offered a terrible table in the bar area and insisted on sitting somewhere else. While prices are high, the food is worth it, but they could do better on service.
The "House' has all that it takes to easily become your home. The menu selection was generous but not overwhelming. Upstairs or down it never loses its charm. The table staff and wait staff were courteous and efficient (our waiter was outstanding, excellent service, timely, all served at once and let us dictate the timing of our meals. Make sure you take advantage of the cozy atmosphere on good or more challenging weather days, it easily adapts its congenial personality
We went here for dinner with my family and were so well taken care of - service was excellent and very attentive to our needs. It's rare to find such a friendly place in the city. Food was also delicious and well presented. Cannot recommend it enough!! A gem of a restaurant!
Excellent service. Food delicious. Salad scallops and red velvet cheesecake. Would have liked to try half order of farrro as an app but kitchen not flexible. Music on loop was really bad and way too loud at the beginning. Pricey.
The food and service were terrific but The House was in desperate need of lots of TLC. Poor reprinting jobs, chair pads with rips, a bar that desperately needed organizing (upstairs), badly scruffed floors.
I hope our waiter finds a better venue, he was great.

Found the restaurant on-line. Decided on the food and wine for dinner before going to the restaurant. I ordered 2 glasses of champagne for me and my wife. We then ordered the Cod and were told they did not have it. I was a bit disappointed so I ordered lamb and my wife had the scallops. I then ordered a bottle of Hendry Cabernet and they were out of that. I told Carlos our waiter that I was VERY disappointed first about the Cod and now the wine. Carlos talked to the manager and he was able to find a bottle. We then had after dinner drinks. We asked for another and they were out of that. It seems who ever is responsible for reordering & restocking is not doing their job. All in all I give The House high marks. Everything we ate and drank was excellent including the service performed by Carlos.
I left Very disappointment with my first and believe me, my last visit to The House. Indifferent service, I had to pour my own wine but they charged $35 corkage service-fee. If you're going to charge a fee, that's fine, I don't mind paying but I better get some service. Our server didn't know the menu or what was going on in the restaurant, he had to run downstairs to seek answers that should've been known before and updates communicated during service. I had to utilize the same dirty silverware throughout; unacceptable. I had to flag the Bussboy down Emilio (very helpful) to get anything because our waiter was too busy doing side-work, at least the food was good until we saw a mouse running in the middle of the dining room. The manager came to our table to apologize buying two of our cocktails. Then she says that it doesn't happen that often... are you serious? and then excusing it by saying "we are in NYC"... come on!!! You're running a restaurant serving food!!! Over all just a dreadful experience.
Perhaps what makes me least inclined to forgive The House is the fact that they had all the men power to impress a first time guest who's trying half of the entire menu in one sitting. This goes to show you that they just simply don't care. I have little sympathy for the utter lack of grace displayed by the whole team. It's a shame!
Needless to say that I will not be returning when there are many far better options out there as I will advise my friends and family of the same.
Our experience was wonderful. We loved the history of The House. There are two bars & dining areas - upper and lower. The lower level bar and dining are perfect for the casual get together. The upper level is suited for an intimate or special experience, a little more formal appeal. Beautiful bars have marble or granite tops, hard wood floors and lots of windows to the street. The food and service were exceptional. Ask for Vincent for a truly special dining experience. Rated Tops and will return. Menue was wonderful- The Mac and Cheese & Deviled Eggs are still on my mind :)
The House is JUST GOOD. The menu has not changed much in the last few years. The service was slow. The food is just okay. The place itself is unique given that it's in a townhouse. But, after that wears off you're not left with too much to say about it. If you have any allergens or dietary restrictions the menu is limited and the kitchen will not do anything to substitute items. I've lived in NYC my whole life, 41 years to be exact. This place used to super cute and the food was much better. We sat upstairs on a 2 top table. The floors were slanted, the seats need to be re-upholstered, the lighting was so dim you couldn't see your food. Honestly, within a 3 block walk you have ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina you're better off going there and having an AMAZING MEAL plus GREAT SERVICE!
I can't believe I had never been to The House before and walk past it every day. I had a friend/colleague in from Paris and I wanted to take her some place unique but close to the office and her hotel, so we wouldn't have to travel too far. I found The House and the story behind it and knew it would be perfect, what I wasn't expecting is how FANTASTIC the food is too! I'll definitely be back. Service is so-so but everything else makes this a really cool spot for a girls dinner, romantic date, celebration, business dinner, or really no occasion at all. It's just a great spot all around!
What a lovely place. This old Carriage house has a staff that appears to love working here! They really aim to please. We sat upstairs where it is quiter and more intimate. The food if very good as are the drinks. This is a special place for anyone who likes good food, good surroundings and good drinks!
Fantastic experience. Best service I've ever had. Will come back here many times in the future for dinners, drinks, special occasions. We were treated like royalty. The food was out of this world. Best scallops I've ever had. My husband's steak was cooked right, seared perfectly and seasoned deliciously. Hamachi crudo was delicate and bright with creative citrus pairings and melted in my mouth. Cocktails were creative and fresh. Short ribs were out of this world yummy. You'll pay for an amazing meal here but it's worth it. Server was warm, funny, attentive, generous and helpful.
Where's the lobster?! I took my mother here for a belated Mother's Day brunch. She ordered the burger which was delicious. I ordered the "Lobster" club. There was barely any lobster! It was mostly diced red onions in a minced lobster spread. I pointed it out to the waiter and he said he would check with the kitchen. He came back and told me "that's how the entire spread is." That's not a solution for the lack of lobster meat on a $22 sandwich. The service was also very slow.
