About this restaurant

The Hoops Inn at Perry Green, near Much Hadham, was probably built in about 1834, a date found on several of our interior beams. Throughout the nineteenth century, it was described simply as a 'beer house' as, in keeping with most rural establishments of the kind, its ales were brewed on the premises. However after a major refurbishment, we are proud to announce that we have re-opened as a pub dining room. Owned by The Henry Moore Foundation, and run by top caterers Harbour & Jones, The Hoops Inn serves modern classic British pub food at lunch & dinner in unique, family-friendly surroundings.

There is a relaxed atmosphere and a good choice of roasts for Sunday lunch. They do a fixed, reasonable price for two or three courses. They also have a good Adnams ale on draught. It is not haute cuisine (I suspect the gravy is made with a stock cube) but the meat (we had roast lamb and the roast beef) was nicely cooked, as were the vegetables. The cheese platter (instead of dessert) was particularly good.

The Hoops Inn is situated next to the Henry Moore Foundation, so ideal to combine the two. In fact there were mid-week deals to do just that between the two venues. Staff in both are very welcoming. We had the two course lunch for £19. I tried the smoked fish medley followed by mixed fish with broken new potatoes and broccoli main. Spouse chose heirloom tomato and goats cheese salad and a saucer sized "home made" meat pie served piping hot with mash and carrots. Our mains were generously sized so we both left a quantity of excess potato behind. Perfect venue to combine a leisurely Sunday lunch with the art next door. Ideal for families, especially during the Summer when the large beer garden comes into play.

The Hoops was quite full when we arrived and I got the impression that that staff were a bit overstretched and perhaps not very well trained - they were not overly helpful with the menu and then you have to go and order at the bar. The food was fine - pie of the day was quite tasty and other dishes were OK, but paying the bill was also a lengthy process with another very long wait at the bar.

Set in beautiful part of rural Hertfordshire. Rounded off a nice afternoon at the adjacent Henry Moore Foundation. Lovely decor - well maintained interior with nice touches (books on shelves, bunting, etc.). Waiting staff young and inexperienced but pleasant. Would have benefitted from a more experienced supervisor. Food was of decent quality. We each had a different version of their Sunday roast option: I had the lamb (overcooked), my son had the beef (he loved it) and other adult guest had the chicken (also very well received). Portions were of a decent size. Chcocolate brownies served with dessert were stale but the ice cream was very good. Overall, thanks to the lovely venue and the generally good level of food, I would return.

We had lunch at the Hoops Inn. It is a nice setting and has a pleasant garden too. Service was friendly, albeit slow. They overcharged us on our bill, but this was rectified when pointed out to them. Would eat here again.

We were really looking forward to our meal at the Hoops Inn. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience and had to walk out. We had to wait nearly 50 minutes for our main course to arrive (no starter ordered). When they did arrive - my chicken had been boiled to within an inch of it's life and the result was tough and tasteless drowning in a flavourless gravy. We ordered bread to share and asked twice for it - only for it to be brought out seconds before our main course. Apparently there was a 'safety' issue in the kitchen. Only reserved tables were allowed in to the restaurant. If there was a problem nobody should have been allowed to dine. We decided to leave before finishing our meals as it was all so terrible. Shame.

We booked in for the Jubilee lunch which was a set menu. We were the only ones there and because of this, there was no atmosphere at all, but of course, this can't be helped and is not the pub's fault, it was just our experience. I questioned the menu with the waitress, because I was sure that when I had checked the menu on their website, it had stated that two courses would cost £19 and three courses would be £24.95. However, on the menu we were given on the day, all dishes were priced individually. The waitress insisted that there was no set price. I couldn't be 100% sure so I accepted what she said. Having checked when I got home, I was correct!! We ended up paying more than expected as a result. Not sure we would return.

Very nice lunch at Henry Moore's own pub on Jubilee week end. Lots of flags, light in spite of clouds outside, good food presented with care, very clean and pleasant atmosphere. Bringing good food after the wonderful visit to Henry Moore's foundation was the icing on the cake.

The restaurant is clean and well presented with quite a nice dining space and reasonable ambience. However, the overall dining experience did not meet my expectations. I was disappointed by an extremely limited menu. Fortunately, myself and my two guests who were foreign visitors to this country, do not suffer from any inhibitions to what we can eat or like to eat because, had we been, we might have struggled to choose from the very few options available. It was also fortunate that we all had fairly small appetites because the portions served would not have satisfied a hungry man. The chips my friend had were not, I believe, made from real potatoes but the reconstituted stuff favoured by cheap eating establishments. I expected better.
