About The Hollow Bar & Kitchen
The Hollow Bar + Kitchen is Albany’s premier spot for contemporary American cuisine highlighting local ingredients. It is a laid-back and charming eatery. Inventive starter plates, such as the heirloom carrot plate with avocado and oranges and the olive plate with whole wheat baguette, are excellent and sharable appetizers. It was a good experience overall..arrived early for reservation....host was more than willing to seat us right then and there....we elected to sit at the bar for a drink...Host notified us at 7:30 that table was ready...Waiter was good...forgot a few minor things..not bad for being busy...food was very good...even the items that I was iffy on.....price may have been a bit steep but it was new years and I knew it going in...no surprises...looked at regular menu as well..it seems very reasonable.
My boyfriend and I went for dinner on a Friday night around 530. The live band was just starting and the dining area was about half full. We both ordered burgers and beers and were very happy with the dinner. One of the best burgers I've ever had, and the beer selection was very large. We would recommend to friends and will definitely return!
While the menu seemed delicious, and the atmosphere was great, we were quickly disappointed by the quality of service. After 30 minutes of waiting we finally flagged a server and asked to order drinks. She then sent a waitress over who took our order, but we were never given a drink menu and had to go on their website to see what was offered. Granted it was her second day on the job, but on a busy night, when the restaurant is full, don't send an inexperienced server who is unfamiliar with the drink menu and pretty much everything, out on the floor. The burgers were not cooked as ordered and on top of all that, we were late to our performance we had been trying to get to on time. It shouldn't take 2 hours to get burgers and drinks, sadly I was disappointed.
As a former waitress I hate to complain at a restaurant but we had a pretty lousy experience here. From not getting acknowledged by a waitress for the first 25 minutes of being seated (we had to go up to the server booth and let them know they had forgotten us) to the lukewarm soup, undercooked fish that was sent back to the kitchen, and the lack of attention which we could see was a result of being so understaffed on a night that they had to know ahead of time that the times union had a show going on, it was a rough visit. I had been there when the restaurant first opened and the food was wonderful, eccentric, and the chef visited every table that was there before they departed. I was really routing for them but after experiencing the bad serice and some expensive and yet very tasteless entrées that lacked any sort of the artisanry that the chef had used to put into them, I will not be back and won't be recommending them left and right like I used to. They are a young establishment still and I hope they will grow past these shortcomings.
Good food, good location, reasonably priced, but poor service. Mistake on check noted when first brought by waiter not corrected when brought back for signature. Corrected when I asked again but delayed our departure by 5+ minutes and we had a show to get to.
Hostess told us Chef/Owner failed to download Open Table reservations. They would try to accommodate us as quickly as possible. We sat at the bar and had a drink. When a table became available we thought we would be seated but were told by the hostess that the kitchen had a 45 minute backup for food. At this point it was 8 PM so we left. Very disappointed!
Even on a night that Chef Henry was laid up, the kitchen was on fire, so to speak. The menu is just so nice, with unusual combinations and imaginative presentation. Curtis was our friendly and swift server. We did not hurry through dinner, but we had a play at Capital Rep to attend, and we even lingered over dessert beforehand and made it to the performance easily (of course it's only next door). I always enjoy the wild salmon over herbed quinoa. My wife had the signature gnocchi. If we had not been on the way to the theatre, we might have also stayed for another drink and to hear the band. The Hollow is a fun destination in downtown Albany, with upbeat staff and the right mix of food, drink, and entertainment.
Trivia started while we were dining in the adjoining room and the microphone was turned up so loud it was impossible to hear or talk over it. They did turn it down - somewhat- but it ruined the dining experience and turned it into a bar experience.
Our entrees came out before our salads. The servers were very apologetic and took the entrees back to the kitchen. When we were ready for the entrees, they brought them back after spending 20 minutes under the heat lamp.
We did have a very pleasant server who did the best he could to make us happy and overcome the shortcomings of the kitchen and bar scene.
Historic looking area in Albany. Food was surprisingly good. The vintage look was everywhere, some will not like that aspect of the place. It had lots of room.;should be a great spot for a group. Parking, on a busy day will be a challenge on the street, prepare to use a garage or lot;ten buck or so on top of dinner (just saying).
The food was reasonable priced for the quality.
One issue, the staff seemed to linger after their shift and spoke quite loudly next to us for easily half the time we were there. Found that to be quite rude. No sure if that is every day situation, but it was that friday night.
Chefs usually hide behind the swinging doors missing the opportunity to interact and connect with their customers. Passion comes in many forms and to see Henry work a dining room is impressive, to say the least. He isn't a waiter, but the Chef and he connects with his customers on two levels: his culinary talents and his ability to visit and talk to each patron to ensure expectations are met, personally. This is a lost art and because of this, I give Chef and the owner's, Mike and Dora high praises for reviving the art of taking care their guests.
First became aware of The Hollow when I took my daughter to a concert there. The place looked interesting, and I figured I would try their food some time, based on reviews I had read. Had New Year's Eve dinner in the restaurant and drinks in the bar afterward. The food was very good, but it was not the normal fare, given that it was an NYE special. The service was excellent, very attentive and accommodating. The bar scene was great as well. There was a wide variety of age groups at the bar; very welcoming. We will definitely eat at The Hollow in the near future, and in fact, are already planning to do so. I would like to try their normal menu. I have already recommended The Hollow to friends and look forward to my next dinner and drinks there.
As a music venue, awesome. We saw St. Lucia there, with Vacationer opening for them--both bands killed it, but what really took it to the next level was the intimate setting. We grabbed dinner before the show, and the house salad and sweet potato fries were quite tasty, but the entrees (the mahi mahi and the chicken marsala) were rather lackluster. My sense is that bar food is their specialty, so in the future I would stick to that. The mason jar cocktails are a safe bet too!
It always puts me off when I am sat and ignored. We were there for 10 minutes before we were given water, and 20 before a beverage order was taken. Seriously? Getthe liquor order when you drop the water.... There were 3 tables seated in the section when we got there, so it was not slammed. It is worse when you see restuarant staff milling about, and you have nothing (bought) on your table, yet no one is looking at you and seeing the empty table. That is poor training. They lost at least 1 round by not being on the ball with that. Ordered a Margarita, got Tequila and OJ. Not a splash of OJ, more like a splash of tequila. Food? Apps came with dinner...no thanks. Saving grace was they were comped, but I still did not eat it. Turkey bacon, and veggie bacon, but no bacon bacon for my burger. Why bother? Had to order a bun-less burger because there was not one single gluten-free item on the otherwise pretentiously foodie/urban menu. Asked for no bun, got the bun anyway. Repeat, it was early, and not busy, maybe 1/2 full at the time.
It's a very interesting space, but they need to hire wait staff, not just cuties in short skirts and tight pants.....
Some of the best food I have had in a while. And, the prices are very low for the quality of the food. I started with a bowl of Pasta Fagiole...wow. It was simply delicious...but it could have been a tad warmer. I then had the strip steak...for $22...it was a steal! It was cooked perfectly...and the pesto gnocchi side dish was fantastic. My wife had the Fried and Roasted Eggplant Stack...it was amazing...and more than enough food to feed an army!! I WILL go there every time I am in town.
We have been to The Hollow twice now in the past month. The first time as a couple, the second time we invited friends. The chicken marsala was delicious as was the steak with pesto. The steak was recommended by the guests at the table next to us and did not disappoint. Dessert was fabulous; we shared the apple cider doughnut bread pudding and it was the hit of the night.
We went to The Hollow because we had tickets for Capital Rep and this restaurant was close by. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised to see how many vegetarian options were offered. Usually there are very few options unless the restaurant is totally dedicated to vegetarian cuisine. Nice atmosphere and great view of downtown Albany. A treasure; can't wait to go back!
Our dinner was delicious, server VERY attentive (but not pushy). We arrived at 5:45 to have dinner prior to the Sly concert schedule for 7. The concert didn't start until after 8, but they were in no hurry to push us out of our table. As the parent of a 17 y.o., I really love that she & her friends can see high quality concerts in a safe club atmosphere. We attended the Brood concert as well - The Hollow is an Albany Treasure & we'll be back (already have tickets for St. Lucia on 11/15).
We have come here twice and loved it both times. The eggplant stack is crazy good even if you think you don't like eggplant. The signature gnocchi is incredible, as is the surf and turf burger. The beer list is great, and they have great happy hour specials that run til 7 on week nights. Our server, whose name I sadly forget, was very helpful in choosing our beer and wine flight selections. A real gem on North Pearl.
After being seated we waited 30 minutes for a server and we had to get up to find one. While waiting for a waiter to come to our table one of us went to the bar to get drinks and experienced the same lack of service; not able to place an order due to one bartender. One meal was wrong; the other was undercooked. The appetizer came out and we had no plates or napkins; we had to wait 10 minutes for a glass of water. The wait staff was apologetic and did not charge us for the meals. We witnessed 3 tables of people walk out because they had no waiter. It was by far the worst service we had ever experienced and we will never go back.
This was my second time dining at the Hollows and both times it was a great experience..... The food is fresh and delicious and I absolutely love there Signature Jar Drinks (the Downtown Mojito is my fave). I really love the different selection of foods they have on the menu; great place if you want to steer away from ordinary pub fare. Awesome service!
The seating area at The Hollow can be a bit noisy because of the popularity of the bar, but don't let that keep you way. The menu is daring in its simplicity, from appetizers and sandwiches, to soups and salads, and of the nicely-constructed entrees. All are fresh and delicious. Try the chili over potato, or the tilapia sandwich, or the mahi plate. Abi with the oh-so-cool eyeglasses was our server. Her soft voice and frequent but unobtrusive stops at our table made for a very pleasant dining experience. Chef Henry Ciccone came out of the kitchen to ask how we enjoyed our meals. He even thanked my wife for ordering one of the specials, in this case pasta with shrimp. We continue to like the funky atmosphere and the menu. We'll be back soon!
The Hollow is a fun, friendly restaurant with two bars. One is within the main restaurant and the other is in an attached space where bands perform. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess who accomodated the seating request I had made. Our server and runners were all very attentive and friendly. We greatly enjoyed the atmosphere and the vitality of the place. The food was very good. I had the eggplant stack which consisted of delicious roasted eggplant, sauce and cheese stacked with asparagus. I must say that although the eggplant was delicious, including about a half pound of asparagus really overwhelmed the dish. A mixture of seasonal vegetables as described on the menu would have been better.
This is my second time at this place and the food is absolutely delicious! The first time here I ordered the gnocchi, this time i ordered the Marsala with chicken, both times I've cleaned my plate! The menu has an awesome variety of meals.
Their special jar drinks are very tasty, plus i love craft beer and they have a great variety of craft beer on tap. What i do appreciate is that there is a section on the menu that recommends what kind of wine and beer would go with each meal. Both times I've been here the chef comes out of the kitchen and asks how the meal was, he seems like a really nice person and you can tell her cares a lot about the quality of his food, and boy does it show! I will definitely be dining here again and again.
