The Hill - Closter, NJ
The style takes a cue from Scandinavian minimalism with a rustic farmhouse decor accented by mid-century design elements, industrial elements and warm earthy colors and natural tones. The atmosphere is inviting and approachable, suitable for everyday dining and also features a full bar, private dining room and outdoor patio.

The Hill remains one of the absolute best restaurants in our area, or near the NYC vicinity for that matter.
The drinks are absolute perfection. One of the best specialty cocktails of any restaurant.
The menu may be a bit limited but if your a true fine diner, you would hope there are a few things done great rather than a lot of things done ok. The Hill absolutely delivers on quality food and great flavor with attention to plating for a full experience. As for value, yes, it is pricey. But you get the best, so I gave it 5 stars for value for what you actually get.
Just try it if you haven’t and if you have, you probably agree.
Loved the atmosphere and the service was great! Food was also very good
Outstanding and delicious!
We decided to try The Hill after seeing it on a list of the 30 best restaurants in New Jersey from New Jersey magazine. It does not belong on this list.
First the good- the dining room is beautiful. Stone fireplace, beamed ceiling, contemporary artwork, and the spacious interior, all led to an amazing look.
Our server Amber was prompt, courteous and pleasant.
She served us delicious focaccia with olive oil. So far so good.
Now the food-We ordered ceviche ($15) to share as an appetizer. It was good. My husband ordered the Moroccan style lamb tagine ($28), which he said was tasty, but there wasn’t much lamb. I had the mahi mahi fish tacos ($18 for three) which also were good but did not contain not much fish.
The restaurant was empty. 2 other tables were occupied, so the noise level was quite low.
I have to add that the manager (?) was wearing jeans and a plaid shirt with many visible tattoos on his arms. He seemed out of place in such a beautiful, expensive restaurant. He also was not very welcoming or polite.
I did not see a handicapped entrance and there were about eight steps to enter and exit the restaurant, which made it difficult for someone with any physical issues.
The bar and outside patio were doing a brisk business, so I may have misjudged the type of establishment The Hill was. I think it would be fine if you are looking for drinks with friends, but not for fine dining.
Ms. Geraghty, I don't accept the criticism of my manager's visible tattoos. I don't stereotype or judge appearances. I disagree he's not welcoming or polite. He's received plentiful effusive compliments on his friendliness and professionalism, I'm proud he's the face of The Hill. While beautiful, you're correct, The Hill is not a fine dining restaurant. It's approachable, accessible, "an elevated experience in a casual environment". Hence the casual dress of my team. Ben Pollinger, chef/owner
Really comfortable and attractive restaurant. Competent and friendly service. We would gladly recommend to others.
the physical restaurant is understated yet elegant..the staff were all pleasant and professional. the food was delicious and excellently prepared and plated. On my most recent visit I had the tuna special which was outstanding. definitely planning to return !
we started with cocktails at the bar, which were amazing, the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. my husband chose from their menu and ordered a "paper plane" which he raved about.
our server was sweet & helpful. the apps terrific-the mac & cheese with short rib special was creative and not heavy.
we had skirt steak and duck for dinner, both of which were not only delicious but presented beautifully and cooked perfectly.
frank (the manager) was attentive as well, friendly and accommodating.
what a wonderful place to celebrate our 30th anniversary!!! :)
Dined in the outdoor area. The food was phenomenal. Very nicely plated & presented. Service was excellent. Food was served hot and in a timely manner. Highly recommend The Hill.
What a lovely restaurant. I hope to return often. It's a little pricey but my meal was worth every penny. Our server was excellent and our meal was served without any delays. My guest and I were lucky enough to eat on the patio, on a gorgeous day, but the interior of the restaurant was simply beautiful too.
It was our first time at this restaurant, and it was some of the best quality food I've had. I highly recommend it.
Always enjoy dining at The Hill. It has a great casual atmosphere, always great food, quiet atmosphere and great service. Their fall cocktails are amazing……
Staff was wonderful. Frank and Andrew are a dream team.
Beautiful restaurant with attentive service. Wish the food was better!
Great food , great service . Friendly and very attentive staff . ❤️ Will definitely be back .
Yesterday's lunch with the Roomie was delicious! We had the Mushroom Risotto and the Moroccan Style Lamb Tagine. Nicely decorated location with friendly and hospital staff. The food was delicious, and we look forward to coming back to try more.
I always enjoy dining here because the food is great, the service is attentive without being fussy or intrusive, very professional, and the general atmosphere relaxing.
Ben Pollinger has taken all of his years as a chef and has molded a winning dining experience. I love coming here!
The Hill provides a fine dining experience from the minute you are greeted until you leave. The staff are friendly and very professional. The drinks are top notch. The food is always amazing. A number of people in our party had the Moroccan Lamb. It was the best meal I have had in a very long time. The atmosphere at The Hill is quiet which allows for nice conversations at the table.
An amazing experience with delicious food and drinks. Staff are truly exceptional and take care to every attention to detail.
They make you feel at home! Everyone says hello. Manager and others stopped by to make sure we were good. Food is top notch. Great atmosphere too. Will go back there again and again and again.
Always a great place to go with friends.
Amazing wine list.
A great local spot in Closter with good food, service and ambience. We'll definitely go back again!
Dinner was delicious. Food was presented beautifully. The ambience was also so nice. Service was attentive. We will definitely eat here again.
We had an amazing meal at The Hill! We had raw oysters as well as a baked oyster app, which was absolutely delicious. Other apps we had were the ceviche, and shishito peppers. For entrées we had the lamb tagine and the short ribs mac and cheese, both of which were absolutely to DIE for. For dessert, we had the chocolate strawberry cake, the limoncello tiramusu, and the cookies and cream cheesecake, which were also fantastic. The restaurant itself was so gorgeous too. A dressy yet casual environment that is as cozy and elegant as an upscale ski lodge. I can't wait to go back!!
Worst Experience ever I have ever been.
The foods what are ordered were came on every one hour.
Very unpleasant restaurant ever.
Great service, amazing food!
Such great food and incredible service. Currently our favorite place. The NuYu cocktail is awesome. Fish tacos are amazing.
It was a very nice environment. But the food wasn’t good. The ceviche was over done, it looks like they prepare their food in advanced
This is a perfect place for a delicious meal. Our server, Jeff, made a Wednesday night dinner a fabulous experience. He was personal, accommodating and overall everything you want in a server. We will be returning often!
It was good. Not anything I would rush back for.
Had a great experience from start to finish. Everyone was very friendly. Frank is very good at this job!
Went primarily for the band which was playing there, however, found all the people who worked there to be extremely friendly and professional. The drinks and food were excellent, although a bit pricey , but you get what you pay for. Enjoyed the evening totally.
As much as I wanted to love the Hill, I just didn't. I'd been to the space when it was Harvest and remember loving the room and ambiance. However, the service was lacking, the food mediocre and for the price point there are far better restaurants around. We ordered the soft shell crab special, the duck medallions, the tagging and the brick chicken. For apps we had oysters(hard to mess those up!), the ceviche and the arugula salad. Both the salad and the duck were over dressed with a balsamic glaze that I could have purchased at Trader Joe's. The ceviche was bland and the brick chicken was boring. The tagine was tasty and everyone passed it around the table. Drinks and desserts, were eh, as was the Hill overall.
We went in August, Once we arrived we were immediately greeted by Frank, the General Manager, and promptly seated. The inside is very clean, welcoming, and quite. There is gorgeous, massive fireplace that commands the room that is probably amazing in the fall/winter. Frank and the wait staff were quick, friendly, very knowledgeable of the menu, and very engaging and reminded me of the professional staff found in France. They were not pushy or trying to get another cover on the table, they periodically checked in with us as the night went on. The food was great. Solid plating, presentation and taste. Menu is a bit limited but, that is to be expected due to COVID. What is on the menu is 5 star. We had the Fish Tacos and the Roasted Duck. Both were the perfect portion. As for the duck, probably the best I have had in the region. The Blueberry Jus really made the plate. We are looking forward to returning soon.
Decided to bring my wife to The Hill for her birthday dinner. The initial reception was warm and friendly, the service was efficient and accommodating and the food was esquiset.
Frank and Lauren were great and made our special occasion memorable.
Needless to say, we will be back soon!
Low quality , the servers have no experience at all.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Always consistently good!
Service was great, everyone was so friendly. Drinks came quick and food was great too
To give this restaurant 5 stars feels like I’m undercutting the true value of the experience my wife and I had. The food was incredible, and I have to call out the Mac n’ cheese specifically because it was out of this world GOOD! The service was exceptional. The dinning area was elegant and comforting and really added to the overall experience.
We found a true gem close to home in this restaurant and will recommend to all our friends and family in the area. We cannot wait to go back!
