We visited in January, so seating is inside a clear tent. Food was still outstanding.
We arrived and no host(ess) was available to seat us, I believe she was standing over at the bar conversing with other staff, we stood there for a few minutes waiting for someone to seat us. AND WORST OFF THEY SAID WE SKIPPED OUR RESERVATION THROUGH OPEN TABLE!!!
It seemed the majority of the staff was standing around the bar chatting and the majority of the tables were vacant when we arrived but was asked to wait further for the staff to finally clean a vacant table with dirty dishes/silverware.
The server was amazing, (I wish I would have gotten his name), but he was very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and spirits, prompt, and always seemed available for questions or orders.
The menu available was not the one stated on their website, (which effected the choices my fiance could have and we did not want to be a bother because of the holiday.) Our orders were fairly simple. Myself - (medium-rare filet, mash, and broccolini) and my fiance - (salad and a side of french fries), with the restaurant being empty we couldn't believe our food took approximately 70 MINUTES from the time we ordered to arrive. The tables that were already seated who had ordered were also waiting for a long period of time prior to their food arriving also.
I can't say the food was worth the wait, but everything was delicious, steak was tender and cooked to perfection, mash was creamy but not too heavy, and the broccolini was very flavorful but not over-spiced. The salad was well... a salad, but the balsamic-vinaigrette was good.
I understand that the restaurant is located in a hotel and would believe the guests that order room service would be serviced first and created by the same kitchen but 70 minutes is quite a long time to wait for an order that simple.
Overall it was an "okay" experience, the server and the quality of the food saved it from being a disaster night. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
We were excited to try this place but when we arrived they were power-washing the area around the pool. The sound of the compressor made it impossible to hear anything but that noise. So this review isn't a fair one about the food or service, which is probably great. But we made reservations, drove all the way there, parked in valet and then walked to the cafe only to find out that it was impossible to stay there and have a conversation over dinner.
great atmosphere and food.
The weather was beautiful so it was great to be outdoors. The food was great too.
Good food and service in a friendly atmosphere. We’ll be back soon.
Gorgeous location for a drink. Mediocre food. Waiter didn't know the menu at all. Couldn't explain a dish when asked. Too expensive for what it is
Really beautiful outdoor patio. Beautiful in the daytime beautiful at night. It was perfect for a late lunch just a 10 minute walk from the UCLA campus. Star spotting here also.
Servers are friendly but slow.
The ratings above do not refer to The Hideout, but to STK, in the same hotel complex.
The Hideout took my reservation just a few days in advance, without comment. When I showed up for a simple summer evening dinner on the poolside patio, I was told that the restaurant was reserved for a private event that evening, and that my reservation had been switched to the hotel's other restaurant, the noisy, indoor STK steakhouse, which was considerably more expensive. Not wishing to relocate all my guests, I didn't go off in search of a different restaurant. But in the end, I wished I had.
Food and service were good. Be prepared for a completely new menu. Some of my favorites have been removed. A 4% surcharge is now posted on the bill for labor charges.
Got there punctually for dinner before a show at the Geffen and discovered the restaurant was closed for renovation. Hope to try it out another time but in the meantime, don't book on Opentable until you confirm they're open again.
Please ignore all ratings - I haven't been there yet but needed to list a rating to leave feedback.
Nice setting for average food at exorbitant prices. Slow service, though friendly. Will not return, do not recommend.
Another delicious meal on the W's relaxed, inviting patio -- I meet a good friend from abroad there annually, and we continue to be charmed by the service and setting. I was not as pleased, however, to watch two valets nearly wreck my car. The staff appear to need additional training as to how to handle the logistics of a crowded garage on a busy Saturday, given that I and other guests audibly gasped watching a valet-driven SUV come within a few inches of smashing my vehicle (and my radio was blasting upon entering the car -- not how I left it). Other than that, a great experience, and the hotel concierge and front-desk staff were incredibly helpful in answering my traveling guest's questions. Thank you.
Went here for my husbands birthday party and had a great time! Party of 15. We were well attended and service was great. Ambiance perfect!
Didn't realize it was a outdoor-only restaurant and we were quite okay with that because it was a beautiful day. Service and food was good, nothing outstanding. There were a number of dogs in the restaurant which I don't mind but diners may want to know about that before booking a table.
This is a fair weather place with no ambience in a plastic tent with concrete floors. We turned around and left without eating.
At the W Hotel. I like the outdoor seating. Good location for breakfast, lunch, happy hour drink.
Lovely outdoor restaurant. Prices were very reasonable, and food was delicious.
Good for adults. Nice outdoor seating around the pool. Relatively quiet and a nice place for a business meeting, good ambiance and feel. Above average service by Moses.
Slow erratic service. Food was okay but very expensive
Pleasant lunch in quiet outdoor setting. A rare thing in Los Angeles, and the food and service is good.
Loved the food and ambiance, but it took over an hour for our food to come. When it did, my salad had a bug in it. The server was kind though and discounted our meal.
Nice spot to get away
Good good that's local
I came here for brunch with my husband last Sunday. It was a really lovely day and the ambiance at Backyard is very nice. It's pleasant, but the word that keeps resonating is underwhelming. The food was pretty good, I got the crab Benedict which was delicious but I thought the potatoes were so-so. Service was above average but kind of slow. (Waited for a water refill for 10-15 minutes after asking twice) i couldn't help but notice there every employee had on a different outfit and most of the servers looked pretty unkempt . It seemed like the only group that had any clear continuity was the server assistants/bussers. I just think that a place that is charging $20 plus per plate should strive to have a touch more elegance, and if it's a casual vibe they're aiming for than at least strive to have some style. All in all, I think that they'd have to amp up the vibe if they want to make it more than a one hit wonder
They only had one waiter for a Friday night. Nice atmosphere and the food was good when it finally arrived.
Our waitress Tyler was awesome and the food and drinks were very tasty. The noise came from crows sitting in the surrounding trees squawking, otherwise it was great.
Excellent lobster sandwich
Great ambiance. Great atmosphere. Incredibly dog friendly on large property. Great food. Great service.
we had the short rib hash, croque madame & a pasta. the sandwich was not your typical croque madame but looked more filling than the tiny portions the rest of us were given.
Waitperson was nice, but service very slow, especially for drinks. The food was overall very good, but certain dishes were not well presented, and in fact, inadequate. The lobster grits and the short rib hash were both served in small bowls, not worth the price, and looked more like appetizers.
This is a really cool spot, by the pool with a waterfall, outdoor dining only. The service is average and the food also is average. We had brunch with 5 of us and the staff seemed to be running around crazy. Granted it was Easter so I don't know if that is the way it always is. I would highly recommend it for a couple of drinks as the area is really cool. Bar itself needs to be upgraded, but overall it is a good, but not stellar, experience.
I meet a friend from abroad at the Backyard, when she happens to be in town, and the servers are consistently patient and delightful with us. We never feel rushed, and we continually enjoy the peaceful outdoor setting and delicious lunch options.
Quick lunch, on a hot day. Staff brought over an umbrella when they saw us getting warm. Very attentive, but didn't hang over us. Good beer recommendations.
Nice and relaxing. An oasis.
Cool atmosphere. I thought the salad was ok but not worth $18.
Good food but bad service understaffed.
The service was so slow. Just an order of popcorn took 1/2 an hour! Menu is limited. Got cold in the evening and most of the heaters were broken down. What I did have was prepared well.
Very high end casual restaurant. Although it feels like a backyard casual restaurant, it's the little touches with the plate ware and the top notch service along with excellent food that makes the place fun to go to.
Food was OK. Not great, but OK. I like their bread though. Service was friendly, not snooty. And ambiance is really great for outdoor dining. Great for hanging out with friends by the pool and just enjoying the sunshine while having a light snack and some champagne.
We were given a tour of UCLA by a student friend of ours then we all repaired to the W for lunch. It was really great, and all that we hoped for. The food, service and venue were all great. Enjoy!
