The Hideout Kitchen & Cafe - Lafayette
I have eaten here on two prior occasions and the food was good. But on Thursday night it was busy. The wait was very long to get food. When the food arrived the scalloped potatoes were raw. I had the clams and mussels. No one quality checked the mussel as they are so small they should not have been served. There was no broth. I don’t know that I will return
Best Fried Chicken in the area
Lovely ambience, consistent food. Elevated basics- love everything we’ve tried! Friendly, relaxed service
The food was delicious! The patio ambiance was soft and inviting. Our server was friendly and informative. We had a great time.
Comfort food menu in a comfortable setting. Nothing special except the very friendly server, who was lovely but a bit overworked. A nice neighborhood place for a casual dinner.
We brought our puppy with us so they put us at a table outside with heaters. Great service and super accommodating with the puppy. Terrific price point and nice secluded location.
Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was delicious especially the Brussels sprouts we shared before our main course. The fried chicken was flavorful and moist. My pasta puttanesca was different than how I make it with tuna but was delicious and full of umami.
We had a birthday party for 10 guests. The food and selections were so good. Our service was outstanding. Our waiter could not have done more for us. I would most definitely book the Hideout again.
Decided to try the Hideout and was pleasantly surprised - tucked away in an unassuming strip mall in Lafayette/ it has a woodsy vibe. Inside the decor was fun and hip. We ordered the linguine with clams, and rib eye steak. Food was delicious - would recommend to anyone looking for solid American fare. We will be back!
Love the staff, ambiance, food
The food was good and the service was pretty good. Only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because I called and asked about bringing a cake and never heard back. I called twice and no one ever returned the call and then I had to remind the server that we had a cake in the back. Not the best customer service but overall a good restaurant
Went here on a special occasion with my wife. Service was excellent. We had a male waiter that was incredibly attentive and insightful. Biggest downside was the temperature. It was incredibly hot! They didn’t have any air-conditioning and only had two relatively small ceiling fans operating but no breeze. So it had to be over 80 degrees in there. Food was excellent but they’ve got to do something about the heat.
I went with my brother who lives nearby in Moraga. As usual the food was well prepared and delicious. The service was extremely friendly and attentive. I had the blackened salmon for 22 USD which was excellent. My brother had the shrimp and grits, which is his go to dish; so he loved it as usual. It gets a bit noisy as there is a lively crowd and a little bit of a bar scene. But they do have other rooms that are away from the bar and kitchen. So if you are looking for a quieter atmosphere, you can request to be seated in one room that looks a bit like a library. Or the other room to the right of the entrance where they tend to seat large parties. I don't know what it cost this time since my brother paid but it is usually very reasonable for what you get.
The Hideout is one of our local places we frequent often. Unfortunately, this past Sunday evening they were out of 4 items on the menu. Since their menu isn't super-extensive, this really did impact our choices. Along with that concern, there was no non-alcoholic beer offered, though my husband did like the seltzer-fruit combo he was suggested as an alternative.
We have eaten here several times and it is always wonderful. The food is incredibly good, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This dining occasion was for dinner. The value is amazing. Portions are huge. Our dinner was also lunch at home the next day. I had the fried chicken which has a honey element to the breading that has you consuming every last crumb. The sides of smashed potatoes and kale are very nice. My wife had the mac and cheese with a meat adder and it was wonderful (we sampled each others) and, lots to take home. Staff is always gracious. We'll be back.
Great little hidden gem in Lafayette. The shrimp and grits were incredible along with the beer selection. There was mud communication regarding the salad I thought I ordered but it turned out they were just helping me watch my weight. Left very full and satisfied without the salad. I will return for sure next time I’m in the area.
This is a little gem tucked away in Lafayette. The service was wonderful. We both had the Sea Food Stew. Lots of fresh seafood. The Bedrock Zin was nice to see on the wine list and worked well with the entree. DC
My first time at the Hideout Kitchen. LOVED IT! Will be headed back there SOON. Friendly, efficient service. Everything we ordered was delicious. Huge portions. Very Nice outdoor courtyard. Cozy indoors. I am eating leftovers right this moment and they are still yummy!!! (two days later)
Great food! Great service! Our server was superb. It made the birthday celebration special! Thank you.
We haven't been to The Hideout in a while and we all loved it even more than in the past. Our waitress was wonderful and helped us choose the perfect wine with a few tastings. Her recommendation for the fried chicken was so appreciated and it was so delicious and a very generous portion. We be back soon!
Great service, food and ambiance! A neighborhood restaurant that has something for everyone. Glad for the expansion, too!
Been to this restaurant many times .. tonight all was good save the linquine and clams .. Honored reservations, waitstaff prompt with excellent service ..libations and salad served in a very pleasant and timely fashion. Main courses arrived on point and on time .. Single issue -- lack of calms and the five that were there were small and smaller ... just a small issue ... Still very good restaurant and fun to be there ..
Great waitress, sat inside and was warm due to outside temperature and lack of air conditioning. Food very good. Had a good time.
The whole experience started off great. We received great service from our waiter Brian, the food was good & so was the wine. We sat outside on the patio & the ambiance was really nice, especially when the sun set & the string lights came on. We were there celebrating my birthday, and I had no complaints while we were eating. The issue came after we paid & left. We paid, then stayed to take a few pics, then left to walk to our car which was parked on the street. After we got into our car & ready to pull off, someone (not our waiter) came screaming/running to your car shouting “Hey you guys were on the patio right??? You guys didn’t pay!” It was literally embarrassing. We definitely paid, so we asked him to go back & check again. 15 seconds later we says to us “oh ok we got your payment”. No apology or anything for accusing us of not paying. It was rude & unprofessional. This took away from the whole experience for us. Especially being the only family of the color at the restaurant that night. So honestly, it’s unfortunate but i’ll probably never go back there again.
This was my second visit. The first was a couple years ago, and I gave the restaurant five stars. Sadly, last Sunday Hideout was disappointing. We were seated in the library, and had no less than six files swirling around our table at all times. They need a way to keep the flies out (perhaps a blower on the door). Also, our cheese appetizer was bland and our honey chicken was dry. Also the great cheeseplate they used to offer is off the menu. I was excited to bring people to try this place I'd enjoyed so much before, but I left feeling embarrassed I'd suggested it.
Great food, great service! Just a little glitch over the bill, but it was easily rectified.
Love this restaurant!!
Hideout has been a favorite restaurant for a number of years. However this time we had some issues with the salt level in our salads and entrees. We usually request low salt on our dishes. The kitchen always complied with this request in the past. But this time the salads were almost too salty to eat, and the same for the entrees. Otherwise the food was well prepared. Service was top notch as usual.
My wife ordered the Honey Fried Chicken and I the Shrimp and Grits. The chicken was crispy and seasoned well as it wasn't salty and the sides showed restraint in the use of salt as well so it was balanced.
The Shrimp and Grits were another story and way out of balance. The grits were extremely salty and all you could taste was the parmesan cheese. The sausage was sliced instead of a small dice which really amped up the salt level and then they topped it off with more parmesan cheese which made it completely inedible. When I told RJ how salty the dish is he proceeded to talk down to me to explain that the cheese added salt (duh!). I told him I knew that but all you could taste was the cheese and that I made them myself (with Parmigiano Reggiano) but the dish was overly salty. I didn't even taste the shrimp. He offered to have the shrimp put over mashed potatoes as the grits were pre-made. I decided to order the lasagna.
When the lasagna came it appeared to have been pre-made as well as the meat around the edges of the square were really hard and the sauce had basically a good flavor but was salty plus they put parmesan cheese on top again. Told RJ and he asked if I wanted something else. I told him I'd think about it and decided if I had some bread and only ate half it may be able to deal with it so I asked RJ for some bread and he said it would come right out. He came back shortly and said it would be coming out soon and it took 10-15 minutes before it came. When I asked the food runner why it took so long and she said it was in the oven. Why didn't RJ let me know? It wasn't worth the wait as my lasagna got cold and the bread, although warm, tasted like a French loaf from Safeway's kitchen. No texture or flavor. Spend a few dollars and get some Acme bread.
RJ came back with my card and the check with a veiled attitude. I rounded up the 18% tip to the next whole dollar anyway even though he became defensive and distant in the end.
Food delicious and generous. Lexi is great!!
The service was exceptional - very attentive and friendly. My waitress, Lexy, was prompt and made good recommendations. The food was well prepared and presented, without being pretentious. I sat indoors but next to a large window that opened onto their pleasant courtyard. It was very comfortable. I wish I could have sat there drinking wine all night!
Friend visiting from Washington DC and we’d not eaten at Hideout Kitchen before
Best meal I’ve had in Lafayette in the 6 years I’ve lived here!! Food, service, ambiance— everything was absolutely perfect (and I’m super picky) I’m now a raving fan!!!
Very nice comfortable spot. The wedge salad was odd and over dressed. The lamb chops were tasty but too salty. Overall, good neighborhood spot.
Good food and good service. A little pricey for what it is, but still o.k. I'll be back.
Always a safe bet. Usually outstanding food, often superior service. Menu needs to change more often.
The food was delicious. My husband had fried chicken I had lamb chops. Took half of it home. We sat on the patio and it was a beautiful night.
We came at 5:30 and ate outside so noise was very acceptable. It was a lovely meal under the tree on the terrace. A pleasure. We will be back. AB
There were4 adults and 2 children. All loved the food and service 3 of us have been there many times since restaurant opened. I have been giving my children gift certificates for last few years. I have mew owner a number of times. Nice person
Hideout is a local favorite - and for many reasons : the food is prepared well, the portions are quite generous , and all priced quite reasonably. Our party started with a salmon crudo which was so good. The King salmon fillet with wild rice dinner was delicious too. Salads are particularly good as well.
Reservations are needed - especially on the weekends as it does get busy. Worth a drive.
What a surprise and delight! A bit hard to find but an adorable hidden patio and HOME feel. Service from hostess to server was friendly. Wine and beer only. We had the honey fried chicken (moist and delicious) and the seafood stew (wonderful!) ordered too the Brussels- they were good but odd, tasted like thanksgiving stuffing. We will be back!
