The Hardware Store Ratings and Reviews
I like the Hardware Store generally, although this time they did not have a booth as I requested and the restaurant is a bit noisy making it harder for me to hear. The booth makes a big difference so I was disappointed not to get one, but I understand there was a computer glitch with the Open Table software.
I've eaten at the Hardware Store many times and while they don't have many vegan/gluten free items, they have in the past always turned up with something for me that was really good. This time, however, I was hassled when the cook refused to make the only item on their menu that fit my dietary requirements. He said it couldn't be prepared before 11am but the menu did not give any such restrictions. When I asked what options I did have, the cook finally said that he'd do it just this once but never again. This put an unpleasant pall over the entire meal and I hope that it doesn't happen again.
We went specifically because they were having live music that night. We got a good table. My husband's crab cakes were good, as were our glasses of wine. My hamburger was good but the french fries looked liked the ones you get at McDonald's and tasted even worse. When you spend $15 for a burger, you should at least get hand cut fries!
Great place for a bite in town. Staff was very friendly and service was excellent. We got the breakfast burrito and omelett. The burrito came out with side of pico and omelett came out with side of crunch potatoes and toast. Everything was delicious and looking forward to come back sometime.
Was trying to be a fine dinning experience but in actuality was more lif
Me a glorified dinner with less attentive service. If you are not a foodie and want a safe family friendly dinning experience then maybe this would satisfy. Otherwise, there arr better options in town.
Came here for breakfast. Arrived before 8:30 and plenty of seating. Shared breakfasts with my wife. Had the blueberry buckwheat pancakes and a spinach bacon omelette. Both were delicious including the potatoes. The biscuit was a bit tough and not much taste, but the raspberry jam was yummy. The wait staff was ok, but he didn't check on us until we were almost finished. If I had needed him, I would have been able to get his attention.
The food was far above and beyond our expectations for this small town restaurant. Service was friendly and personable. I, my husband and my two teenage boys devoured the Parmesan Fries with Truffle Oil (You NEED to try these!), and all of our entrees were beautifully cooked and delicious - Buttermilk Chicken, NY Strip Steak, Spicy Chicken Burger, and the Halibut on the Special sheet.
Not quite ready for prime time: a Tuesday lunch should have been easy but the restaurant was full and their servers weren't on their game. Were the regulars on vacation? It's summer on Vashon, yes, but the Hardware Store has been here for years and should be ready for the influx of visitors. My burger was underdone (I asked for medium) and my friends' falafel was cold. They reduced our bill by 20% due to long wait, but it wasn't a pleasant experience.
We went to the Hardware Store for my birthday dinner on a weekend visit to Vashon. The food was good; we enjoyed all items but did find everything to be more oily than we are used to in Portland...the crab cakes were good but standard fare. The mussels were quite good; the chowder was also good, not too thick. The truffle fries were much too oily and actually, the fries with our son's meal (plain fries) were better and quite good! The halibut special was probably the winner of the night. The bread is wonderful although served very sparingly. The banana cream pie was fine but I would get a different dessert if I went back, it was mostly whipped cream. Our waitperson seemed busy and we didn't see her that often. Drinks were fine - I enjoyed my blackberry Mule and unlike many places, seemed to have a healthy pour! It did seem like the neighborhood hang out where the locals all knew each other. They have a kids menu which their website didn't tell me and was MUCH appreciated (a coloring page). It was an enjoyable meal, if heavy on the oil; not forgettable but not necessarily memorable either. The brunch menu looks tempting.
This was our very best experience ever at this restaurant. Our waitress was perfect. Our food was excellent. The service was timely (no over-long waits). On other occasions we have felt positively ignored. We especially appreciated that the noise level was tolerable. So often you have to shout to be heard, which only increases an already overly-loud volume. Pam Ingalls' pictures set a nice tone. The children's menu might have just a couple more items on it; the particular child with us is not a very adventuresome eater, though she did enjoy her chicken fingers, so we were lucky there.
A great restaurant to visit if you're looking for something to do on a weekend and want to ride the ferry. My husband and I brought our twins who are three months old here on a Saturday and enjoyed the kid friendly, yet adult atmosphere. The spicy chicken sandwich is full of flavor!
Excellent menu, with broad choices. Fresh, seasonal items, blend of seafood and land, availability of vegetarian choices. Bar choices were also good, with very nice local wines to complement the meal. Wait staff was friendly, made good suggestions, ensured a lovely experience. Thank you!
As always, we enjoy a meal at The Hardware Store Restaurant and the waitresses are excellent. This was the 2nd time in a week that I had eaten here with friends -- my soup and sandwich was great. This time we had family visiting the island and found it convenient to place our reservation online thru 'Open Table'. Three of us had great burgers, but I had fish & chips. My fish was flavorful but even with tartar sauce, was a bit dry. The order obviously came with fries, but an option of cole slaw would have been nice. The men ordered beers and us ladies ordered apricot sparklers. We both felt the basil sadly overpowered the apricot puree & lemonade and used our straws to avoid drinking "the seaweed" that gave it the appearance of a 'high tide' drink! I should have ordered wine!
