Very slow service tonight.
I was disappointed especially with our burgers, which both tasted burnt, acrid, like charcoal...even my husbands who was cooked properly at medium inside. The waitress never checked on us once after we started eating. Cleared our plates when we were done but never brought a check, although it was clear our 3 kiddos were restless and ready to go when she cleared the plates. The place is nice and the food seems great on paper, but was really basic in reality. I would try a different place next time I am on the island.
I’ve been to the Hardware Store many times and typically enjoy it. And I did this time too, with one caveat — the exceedingly loud live music made it very difficult to have a conversation. THS, you might try turning the amps down on the musicians, and/or choosing musicians who are more aware of the situation they’re in and the people they’re playing for.
Restaurant was very noisy. Server did not smile, our make eye contact while at my table.
Good try... the heart is there but the know how is lacking
St. Patrick’s Day!
Always love this place! One of the best restaurants on the island!
Just across the sounds and a quick Carrey ride to Vashion Island and your a world away. The Hardware Store has a small town feel with a big city taste. The mood is welcoming and the staff warm. I have been here for breakfast and dinner and always leave feeling taken care of and have enjoyed each bite! Make reservations for dinner as the seats for fast. Take time to check out this hidden gem!!!
We had another wonderful experience. Our waitress, Jana, was such a pleasant professional on both of our visits to The Hardware Store restaurant. The food was delicious and well prepared. We weren’t rushed with our courses.
We highly recommend THSR!
One of our favorite places. Service and food always great and we feel right at home.
Wonderful ambiance, excellent food, outstanding service. My husband I ventured to the Hardware Store on Friday night for a one-day "late" Valentines dinner and had a fantastic time. The server made us feel very taken care of and let us take our time when we couldn't decide what to order - seriously felt no pressure at all, and that she wanted us to have all questions answered, etc. The food was delicious - husband ordered buttermilk fried chicken dinner -which came with mashed potatoes, gravy and an assorted vegetable side with several types of squash and peppers stir-fried to perfection. I ordered buttermilk fried chicken salad, that came with avocado, bacon bits, fresh little cherry / grape tomatoes and dressed with just the right amount of dressing. We ended the meal with a salted peanut butter frosted chocolate cake slice for dessert, with hot coffee for me. We've been here several times for special occasion dinners - if we lived closer we would probably walk to have dinner here several times a week! I love the Hardware Store on Vashon!
On Valentine's Day, we wanted to do something special as a family, so we went to OpenTable to make a reservation at The Hardware Store. The only times available were 8:30pm and 8:45pm, so we reserved the 8:30pm time slot. My partner and I were taking our 3 kids to dinner, and they were all VERY hungry, but we told them to wait to eat because we had made reservations at 8:30pm.
When we arrived at The Hardware Store, our table was not ready, and we were told that it would be awhile. THEN, while we were waiting, they gave us the "bar menu" because dinner was no longer being served. We said that wasn't right because we had made dinner reservations at 8:30pm! No luck... so we left and ate somewhere else. It was NOT a good experience!
Not good this time. Prime rib was ordered medium rare, and was medium at best. Also was not very warm. Also not very tender like prime rib usually is.
Fish was over cooked. Risotto was great.
Unfortunately we were turned away when we came, even though we had reservations (and there were many open tables and nobody waiting or coming in). We were told that opentable was taking reservations even though they were full and that they weren't coming through on their computer. It seems highly unlikely to me considering that we made our reservations that morning and 5:30 was the only available time slot. I wish I would have got the name of the hostess (was a teenage girl). Situation was fishy and she made us uncomfortable.
Great as always. Enjoyed the Valentine Day Specials. Service was attentive.
It was good. My food could have been warmer. Waitress forgot a few things but nothing major. Didn’t receive bread, which was OK. Bottle of wine opened before it was brought to the table, but not a big deal.
The waiter and the host were passive aggressive to me and my guest, and seemed like serving us was a hassle and we were burdening them
We always have exceptional service and food!
Wonderful and drinks. Service was great! Not too expensive!
Hostess and servers took good care of us! Delightful experience. Food and drinks were great. Thanks also to the chef!
Never anything except an excellent meal served by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. The daily specials are not to be missed.
TBH If it wasn’t one of a teeny handful or niceish sit down table service restaurants on the island I would probably come here even less than the once every few months that I do. The food is meh at best, the service is always up for grabs and it’s expensive for the family restaurant quality. I did have the Impossible burger which they’ve improved on since my last visit. But really for me, the service is the deal breaker. You never know what you’ll get; some days you can wait twenty minutes before someone comes to your table after you’re seated. I’ve had my order lost more than once and I’ve never had the check come in a timely fashion.
I’d rather go to SnapDragon or Casa Bonita for huge plates of food.
We all had a marvelous time. Everyone's meal was exceptional.
It was a busy night, so our reserved table was not immediately available, but staff did make us comfortable and we waited at the bar until there was space for us. Food was great, and service was awesome!
Food was great! Veggies with my steak were a bit skimped on for the money I feel but the quality and taste was great.
Service was very good, very polite and friendly.
Only issue I had was the front and back door has no wind barrier and you get a cold draft every 5 minutes. I would recommend they put a curtain in front of the doors like most places in seattle that have this issue.
Will come back soon but with a warmer jacket.
Lavosh was fantastic. Burger was very dry. Fries where same as any other place. Beer and cider was great.
I have eaten at the Hardware Store many times. On a typical visit the service, food and drink are great. On this particular Saturday night, we made a dinner reservation for 4 through Open Table. We were seated in the back of the restaurant near a door (one that I had never noticed before). People were coming and going through this door creating an arctic blast of cold air each time because it was a very cold December evening. We asked the host to be moved before our drinks arrived. For various reasons we were not able to move to an open booth or other available table at that time due to other reservations (we too had a reservation and a poor table assignment). After being served only our drinks, the table next to us but further away from the door opened up so we asked to be moved there. We were told that there was a reservation for that specific table. This seemed suspect and no one ever showed up to dine there. Our server later told us while giving us our bill that the reservation had been cancelled. We were very disappointed with the inability of THS to accommodate us. I will think twice before taking guests there in the winter.
Absolutely wonderful dining experience. The menu had so many delicious choices. I had the shrimp and grits which were delectable. Excellent seating and table service by the wait staff!
This Vashon mainstay continues to amaze! Wonderful new menu and the always surprising specials carte make for a special evening even if there's no occasion. The service continues to be five-star. The best restaurant on Vashon just keeps getting better. It's worth the ferry fare to try out for Holiday dining. Lunch is also served.
Food was good as usual but the music they had playing was way loud. Restaurant was very noisy, more so than usual. We quickly asked for check after we were done eating and skipped more drinks and dessert . We could barely hold a conversation.
If you are going to take the trip to Vashon, the Hardware Store is a must stop.
Thanksgiving dinner was great!
The environment was nice and not too loud. I had fish and chips GF and the fish was watery. The fries were good though. My friends had regular fish and chips and meatloaf and both said it was tasty. Clam chowder was very good. Came back for brunch and had a traditional breakfast which was good.
I often come here because of the menu, the ambience, and the people. Best chowder on the planet in my book. Crab cakes are great too.
I really like this place. Great clam chowder and crab cakes. The mini pizzas are also terrific. I’m so fond of the above items I need to branch out more.
We are regulars at the Hardware Store. Anytime we have the opportunity to go to Vashon Island, it usually includes a trip to this restaurant. The food is delicious, the service is great and when on occasion there has been a mix up or an issue, they make it right, right away with a smile. My favorite meal is the buttermilk chicken or the buttermilk chicken salad. Both are perfect portions and just delicious. They usually have very interesting specials and those are usually fabulous as well. All and all, an excellent choice for a night out.
We were among the first customers in 2005 and continue to enjoy THS. On this particular evening, we ran into five friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Coupled with good food and great service, it was a great night. Thumbs up for THS!
The Hardware Store has a nice atmosphere with loads of local art, in a converted hardware store with a nice sense of funky history. It has a fun and local vibe, with occasionally great music.
The food is generally okay, but is terrible if you need to order off the menu (vegan / have any kind of special dietary needs, etc.) as they seem passive aggressive against you. This makes it really hard to eat there with a larger group, as someone in the group is bound to be disappointed.
If your food tastes are standard American diet, and/or you are just going there for drinks, then it's a pretty good pick.
We waited over 2 hours for our dinner. Asked if we could have bread with our salads. After we finished our salads the dirty plates sat on the table until I asked a server passing by to please pick them up. After 2 hours I finally asked our server when our dinner was coming? Food was just ok, nothing special. Their were 6 of us, bill seemed high. But we did tip well. Probably won't go back!! Big disappointment!
Our party of five had a lovely meal with gluten free accommodations gracefully offered. Wine and food was delicious. The room is a bit loud but otherwise a terrific community hotspot.
