About The Hake
The Hake is a waterfront restaurant with a seasonal menu. The menu reflects sustainable and fresh ingredients of the coast of California, while drawing inspiration from the flavor of Mexico and the Mediterranean.
Our most popular dishes are being brought back starting with our famous Shaved Beef Tacos, fresh Tuna Tostadas and marinated Tuna Carnitas. Chef Omar Gomez, also brings new dishes to complement our fresh take on Ceviche Peruvian and Grilled Spanish Octopus. Although The Hake is Seafood oriented, we also offer a Certified Angus Beef 12 oz. New York Steak, served with herbal pistachio chimichurri and confit potato plus an assortment of house made fresh desserts.

The Hake Ratings and Reviews
The Hake has a rather unique outlook for a gourmet, high end restaurant. The dishes are creative and they promote sharing of the dishes. This allows the guests to experience many different flavors, textures and food types. The prices address not cheap, but for the type of dishes presented and created this location is well worth the trip. In addition the service was impeccable. Definitely a dining experience worth having.
This place was a surprise for so many reasons. As we first arrived there were few tables full and the same when we left. However the food was creative, fresh and very delicious!!!.Our server was well educated and enjoyed some fun with us.
The only down side was the limited menu with few entree style dishes and the "sharing" dishes were sufficient for 2 people only. This is truly a hidden gem, you need to try it!!!
A friend and I visited Hake to participate in SD Restaurant week.
We had gone after the sunset, but I think if you go during the day or even sunset, you will be able to enjoy an awesome view.
Each dish is relatively small, but after a few you definitely get full! Each dish was very good and as expected.
The brownie dessert was a bit too heavy for our taste; but the decoration was pretty.
Service was superb :)
I think this would be a great, great date spot!
Valiant effort but honestly the food was pretty disappointing. The tamale appetizer we had literally tasted like it was from a microwave dinner, and the rest of what we had wasn't much better quite honestly.
Beautiful restaurant but they really need to step up the food if they want this place to be successful.
I hadn't back to the Hake since the remodel and let me tell you, it was worth the wait! The ambiance is amazing, with lots of bright natural light, gorgeous views, and always delicious food. We shared 6-7 small plates at our table of 4 and it was so good. And the bartender and after dinner drinks cart had libations that complimented our food and capped the evening right. Will definitely be going back soon!
The Hake has such a lovely ambience, very inviting and can be seductively romantic.
A window table adds to the dining experience. All staff, from the congenial greeting at the door
to the waiter service, is attentive and engaging. Wine menu is superb with notable selections.
Again, our waiter, Cole, was quite knowledgeable and helpful in choosing the perfect wine
for our meal. We had a Pinot Gris, Domaine Weinbach, France. Our food items were the Grilled
Spanish Octopus ( a must-try, my favorite), Hamachi Tiradito-exquisite, Mussels and Daily Catch Stew, a to-die-for- surprisingly -simple but delicious (wish I could slurp)soup, the Seasonal Fish
and Pork Tenderloin Large Plates. Both large plates were delectible and presentations of every
dish showed thoughtful and gourmet finesse.
In all fairness, I have to say this was my fourth experience so I am quite biased in favor of Chef
Aarti's and her Sous Chef Joshua in their commitment to bring to the table an extraordinary
I wanted to like this place with its great location.
But the ocean view disappears in the evening and you can't hear the ocean like at other waterfront restaurants.
The food itself was very good, but the portions were very small: even when advertised as tapas.
What really disappointed was the service. My husband had to get up and pour us wine several times and the timing of the dishes were spaced badly.
I think for the value there are so many other great restaurants in La Jolla.
Was a bit underwhelmed - had been highly recommended but the food was just good, not great, which is difficult to stomach when you have to get a few plates per person to feel full. I'd probably give this a miss, even though the ambiance and service were great.
Beautiful window view overlooking seals and ocean. Food was fresh & delicious. Two of us had steak & two had fish, opah & sea bass. Service, hostess, wait staff were extremely friendly and attentive when needed. A bit pricey but well worth it. Appreciated that they let us have our HH wine at the table.
We've gone to a lot of restaurants in different cities, and here at home The Hake is my go-to. It seems to fit the bill, no matter who we're dining with. On our recent visit, we had the pleasure of watching seals splashing around the cove. Such a classic San Diego scene. That along with the great seafood & Mex inspired dishes, really good cocktails, and great service is really more than you get at most restaurants. The only thing is if you're dining with kids, there isn't a kid menu.
I had been wanting to try this place for a long time and just never got around to it. Went with my two sons (17 and 19).
First the service. Chris was our server, he explained the menu, how to order, and made some great recommendations. On the Cold plates, we took all 3 of his recommendations, on the hot plates we did one of them and chose the others ourselves, and we never wound up ordering an entree because we were too full and chose desert instead.
All i can say is WOW! We all kept saying that with every dish we would dig into! The ingredients are extremely fresh, the combination of ingredients is unique and delicious, and the flavors are light and delight your palate. We all agreed that everything was really amazing. Here is what we ordered and it's rating (1 to 5 with 5 being best)
Hamachi Tiradito - 6 - amazingly light and delicious, super fresh fish, great combination of flavors.
Seasonal Fish Ceviche - 6 - i can't remember what type of fish it was, but something i hadn't heard of before. It was wonderful! ask for extra tostado chips (they only give you 2, you probably need at least 4 total).
Lobster Aguachile - 6 - I don't even know what to say about this delicious plate. it had 3 pieces, so it was perfect for us.
Lobster Masala - 4 - This was recommended, but i think was our least favorite of the 6 dishes we ordered. Wasn't bad, it was actually very good, just a bit unusual preparation and did not look very appetizing.
Mussels and Daily Catch Stew - 6 - Exceptional! Mussels were tender, fish was perfectly cooked, and the broth was light and delicious, great flavor! Order extra grilled bread...you will want to sop up every last bit of the sauce.
Grilled Spanish Octopus - 6 - You have to try this! Delicious!
Mexican chocolate bread pudding - 3 - This was a bit of a disappointment after the amazing meal we had. It was good, but not great! We thought it would be warm, but it was more like room temperature, denser than most bread puddings.
