Excellent place to experience Kurdish food. Portions are huge and food is tasty. It’s exceptionally noisy but worth the noise. Esp loved the Kurdish coffee.
Amazing food and service
This a a wonderful and authentic Kurdish restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. We will definitely be going back.
We have been here twice now and definitely recommend it! House made bread is amazing, hummus appetizers, salads all very fresh, my husband loved his lamb shank. Looking forward to going back and trying a fish dish!
Every time we've visited Gundi's kitchen we've had an enjoyable meal and good service. If you're concerned that you don't know Kurdish food and will be challenged, no need to worry. There are some similarities to other middle eastern or persian cuisine. The dishes are flavorful without being overly spicy. There are good options for vegetarians. The weekend brunch egg dish platter is fantastic.
The food was excellent, think more spicy and flavorful Mediterranean food. Unfortunately, the service was awful. I had to ask for menus, constantly ask to make a drink order, waited a considerable amount of time to put our food order in. For these reasons, we decided to have dessert elsewhere.
Our waiter, Amet, was amazing and everyone was friendly even when we over stayed
Lively scene, attentive welcoming service. The garlic shrimp was fresh and zesty and we
started out with hummus and warm bread. We have been back several times and always
enjoy our evening there. A great place to dine before or after a movie at the Landmark Century,
only a few blocks away. We'll be back!
Awesome meal. Food was outstanding and all the staff were so kind and accommodating to our toddler. Thank you!
The food flavors interesting; servers do try; noise level gets in the way of conversations except at closing when it has thinned out.
Very good food. Relatively large portions. The stuffed chicken is very, very good.
Food was excellent.
Very good experience. We will be back.
We were enticed here by an episode of "Check Please" and also by good reviews. We loved our entrees, which were the stuffed chicken and lamb shank, but weren't that happy with the grilled cheese appetizer. It would have been better if it were hot. The baba ganoush was good, but not spectacular like the entrees. It was quiet when we arrived at 6:00, but by 7:30 it was very.....energetic! The entrees were so good we'll be back.
Very nice addition to the area. I love lamb and so wanted to try after seeing restaurant featured on one of the 10pm news restaurant features, I had to try it. The Ezme & Walnuts and Zêr Beet Salad were delicious ( I LOVE BEETS).
If you are a Lamb lover like me, that lamb shank......yes, yes, yes (in my best Homer Simpson voice). Delicious, tender, meaty, mouth watering. And more than enough for two people or to take home for leftovers.
I can't wait to go back to try the Shish. And I will be spreading the word.
Always excellent food and service. The fish and the lamb are particularly tasty. Best baba ganoush in the city.
I took my son and his wife here for a birthday celebration. The service was very attentive. The food was absolutely delicious. We had the mezza platter for an appetizer and loved all 4 dips. We shared the stuffed chicken, adana kebab and lamb wrapped in eggplant. All three were absolutely delicious.
The only down side is that parking is tough so maybe Uber there or walk. Great place. I'll be back.
Absolutely wonderful food and service. Limited wine menu but we always let the server pick a bottle for us and we have never been disappointed. Staff is friendly and extremely attentive. We could eat here every week.
My husband & I went for our 28th anniversary. This was our first time. The food was excellent! I ordered the Baba Ganouch for starters & it is delicious and spicy. I ordered the stuff chicken it was sooooo goooood! My husband ordered the lamb shank and it was very tender and I must add, the vegetables was the bomb! We also drank red wine and it was very good, and the service was excellent. Also, the chocolate Belgium cake was awesome. We will be back! Highly recommended.
We went to The Gundiz because we were intrigued to try Kurdish for the first time, and we were not disappointed. The food was flavorful and artfully prepared, a pleasing blend of the familiar and the novel. I’m not normally a fan of baba ganoush, but it was maybe the best I’ve ever had. The prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive, and we especially appreciated that nobody tried to rush us out as we were having our (complimentary) post-meal tea, even though the restaurant was approaching full capacity. Overall, I highly recommend The Gundis, and I plan to go back there soon - and with my friends in tow.
Tried because we saw it on Check Please - was amazing! We loved it and will go back. Great food and wonderful service.
The Gundis Kitchen is a gem - the food is fantastic, surpassed only by the attentiveness and quality of the staff. For those who are not familiar with Kurdish food (I was not familiar before dining with The Gundis), the food is full of wonderful and unique blends of savory and spicy flavors. The seafood and vegetable dishes are particularly good, as is the spicy lentil soup. (I don't eat red meat, but the lamb dishes look beautiful, and I've heard those eating them raving). We frequently take our out-of-town friends and family here and they always love it - especially the chocolate moose, which is the best I've ever had.
Gundis is a Lakeview neighborhood gem. We dine there frequently and have brought many friends and I always get bonus points for sharing this place with my circle. There are so many wonderful dishes it's hard to know where to start. For a lighter meal for two try sharing the Mêzê Sampler and one entree. The Newroz Pasta is an excellent vegetarian choice. We love the Halloumi Cheese Salad, the Grilled Octopus and the Stuffed Chicken. I'm not a meat eater but my husband loves the Lamb Shank. The restaurant is child friendly and good for large groups. Even though there are often large groups, the space is conversation friendly. The staff is warm and knowledgeable. Landmark Century Centre Cinema is just south of Gundis so this is an excellent choice after a movie. Do make a reservation and do plan to allot ample time to enjoy the food and the conversation.
The Gundis is our go-to nice restaurant - business dinner, birthday, or just a nice night out. The food is consistently above and beyond, the servers are kind and attentive and knowledgeable, and we love showing our friends the very best Chicago has to offer. There are a lot of restaurants in the city, let alone Lakeview, but this one takes the cake.
Food and service was great. Mahmat was good at explaining the menu and recommending.
I'd like to recommend this place, but I just can't. The service was unbelievably slow. Our server was so slow I thought he was napping btw one person's order and the next. The food was fine, but it wasn't all that different from any other middle eastern restaurant, and it fell a little flat. It's a fairly small menu with limited choices. Dessert was disappointing. But it is a beautiful space, and parking was easy. So there's that.
Nicest server ever. Food was incredible and unique. Coming back
Very nice dining experience
The food was so delicious and now one of my favorite restaurants. Highly recommend.
Four of us went because we had seen The Gundis reviewed on Check, Please. Our reservation was for 7PM on a Saturday night, and much to our surprise, the restaurant wasn't as crowded as we had feared. In fact, it's a lovely, spacious room, with space between the tables, so you don't feel as if everyone is a part of your dining experience.
Our waiter was funny and charming, and the food, when it came was really wonderful. We had two appetizers, four entrees and two desserts. One person had a lamb and eggplant entree, another had the octopus, another some pasta with shrimp, and I had a very spicy vegetable stew. No one had a bad thing to say about anything that we ate. It was all wonderfully flavorful, and we really enjoyed trying the different items. Even the Kurdish coffee was a revelation. We sat for a couple of hours; no one bothered us, and we were able to eat and chat and just have a good time.
At the end of the meal we all agreed that we wanted to return and to bring other friends with us. We really had a great experience!
The food the service is all excellent we love this place
An overall wonderful restaurant. A fantastic addition to the Chicago restaurant scene. Love introducing friends to this place. They always love it.
Valentines Day, love the food and service!
Loved eating at Gundis!! The food has a special quality and flavor that I have not found at other Mediterranean restaurants. We got the spicy lentil soup, the Zaza pasta with shrimp and the vegetarian stew. Such good flavors and we were stuffed to the brim! The wait staff was so kind and helpful— they even brought us complimentary cookies at the end of our date! Would definitely go back again if I lived in Chicago!
40th birthday dinner
We had a wonderful dinner with friends. Food was amazing!
It was a cold, snowy Monday evening, so Gundy's was pretty empty, but for me and my friends, that was perfect. The staff is gracious and friendly, and the food really is outstanding. Our waiter, Mehmet, was helpful with suggestions and explanations and, because business was slower than normal, we had a chance to chat with him and get to know more about him and the restaurant.
The food is not cheap, but it's worth it. Beautifully prepared and presented, and wonderful flavors. The table 'favorite' this evening was the stuffed chicken. Yum!!! But the lamb/veggie plate and the veggie stew were also delicious.
Apparently weekends are very busy, so make a reservation. Or better still, find a quiet time to go and you'll have an even more memorable experience.
I will definitely return.
Delicious and very understated, courteous service. Went twice and would go back.
The food is bland and we weren't able to taste any spices that made it unique.
