Our food was delicious and our waiter was awesome. The ambiance itself will win you over. We plan to go back.
Unnervingly loud atmosphere. Poor service.
We came with out of town friends. We couldn't hear ourselves think, never mind talk. Service was very slow for initial drinks. After waiting too long for a server to take orders, we paid for our drinks and left with great relief.
The location had two things going against it... there was a large party which had taken over the main bar, as opposed to the open spaces in the back, and there was almost no service unless you were part of of this group. I waited over 10 minutes for the hostess (also the server!) to meet me and show me to our table. The hostess was overworked and surly, not her fault, as she was the only one who was supporting everyone who was not at the bar.
The Gryphon actually called me earlier in the day to ask if we (who had made reservations through OpenTable) would prefer to be seated at the bar... the same bar which was taken over by a private party. Not sure how that would work out for anyone!
This place does not belong on OpenTable as it is NOT a restaurant, and should not be advertized as such.
This is primarily a bar, with only a few tables for dining. The noise from the bar was overwhelming at 6 - 7 pm. The table service was good and the food was fine, but I would not choose to eat there again.
Since the Gryphon revamped its happy hour food menu, the whole vibe has changed for me. The raw bar is gone, the best Social Bites are gone and the remaining ones are no longer discounted, the extensive selection of steaks is no more...Still a beautiful setting, but there's nothing on the menu that sets it apart from any other bar/lounge. I miss the old Gryphon.
We were disappointed that they just changed their menu tonight. We liked the old menu. They have also changed the seating & it was not as comfortable. Their Cajun Ribeye was the best steak in DC. We will be looking for a new place.
Menu "changed" the day before so steaks & ribs were no longer available. Just normal bar food
The atmosphere and ambiance of the restaurant was great. The service was really good but I fell in love with the zucchini chips.
Definitely get the fried caesar Brussels sprouts and alligator bites! Our server Aly was super engaging and gave us some great ideas of other places to try during my vacation.
The ambiance was nice. The social bites are great. They could use more selection for people who do not eat beef entrees. Our waitress was rather snappy. I guess attitude is trendy. She also had a foreign accent, so maybe it was a cultural norm in whatever part of Europe she reigns from, we didn't ask. We had 7pm reservation so the bar scene was just beginning to pick up by the time we left. I can tell its a happening spot after 10
Looking to not be in a franchise for dinner was our goal. Gryphon provides a wonderful dining environment with truly diverse food choices. All of our meals were cooked as requested and tasted fantastic. The side dishes are where the diversity is at Gryphon. Take my advice and just order three or four sides and you will be blown away by the flavors. Steaks were excellent as well. Our group was 8 people and everyone found something they loved.
The surroundings are very welcoming and add to the dining experience. You might end up staying longer than you expect as the bar and overall restaurant favors intermingling with other guests.
Meet friends to try out the restaurant. Surprised by the various seafood dishes. The raw oyster were priced reasonably. Beers were priced great. The décor was unique like your sitting in some ones living room.
The food was good but the service was not. I went with a group of girls for a bachelorette evening and our waitress only took our orders and gave us our bill. She never came back to check if we wanted more drinks or if the food that was dropped off was good, bad or indifferent.
This restaurant has very few actual tables and is more of a bar with an open dance floor. Having said that, we both had Bistro Steaks that were perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned although a bit salty. The sides or mashed potatoes and broccoli were generous. We ended up with leftovers. We'll probably go back, but not for awhile. Like I said, mostly a bar.
I only gave less than 5 stars on the food as I don't like my steak seasoned too much. A great quality steak doesn't need all the seasonings that is put on it.
No issues getting a reservation. I may have set the bar high because of the numerous good reviews. Good happy hour raw bar, good service, but the steak dinner was not up to the reviews. It was NOT bad, just not great. Perhaps a minor thing, when my filet mignon arrived it was already cut into slices. Sort of felt like a lack of confidence thing -- as in, cut it to make sure it was Medium Rare. Also, the ambience was weirdly clubbish, more bar-like than high-end-restaurant-like. I would go back, but not before trying one of the zillion other places in DC.
Decided to meet friends for dinner last minute and thought why not> did not know it was a steakhouse/restaurant in the first place... My friends said it was just a bar. The food was really really good. Outstanding sprouts but everything we ordered was delicious. Great drinks.. had martinis and the total bill was only 60 bucks each for 3 and we were stuffed!!! Yes it is noisy in a good way but good service nice spacious areas ...a really nice surprise. Have been to a lot of restaurants that all the are are hype but them the food is overpriced and small with a huge bill to follow (relate anyone?) ...Go ahead guys give it a try and bring a group for dinner and share the plates and have lots of drinks..fun times.
We had 4 "small plates" for our dinner which was plenty of food. 2 of them were exceptionally good and 2 of them were average. But we give them points for how unusual their menu and dishes are as to their ingredients - the combination of flavors was truly exceptional. The 2 dishes that were not so great were Kobi beef (rough & tasteless) & lamb shank (also tough & tasteless.) The big deterrent though was the noise level - it was really noisy due to the vibrant bar scene. But overall, it is worthy of a repeat visit when we're in DC again.
the food was very good but thats where it ends. service was minimal we had to ask for side plates 3 times before getting them. the loud noise from the bar washes over into the restaurant. The steak we had was very good however.
Food is always better with smiling faces. From the door, the folks at Gryphon made sure we felt welcomed!!
The focus of the menu is red meat and the restaurant does a good job. Good service too and reasonably priced. Not a great meal but it's a good value for your dining dollar
The service was excellent. The mediocre food was over priced. The seating was uncomfortable. If I head back, it will likely be just for the bar, and will skip dinner.
Best cooked ribeye I have ever had. Perfection
This might just be one of the best kept food secrets in Washington, DC--off DuPont Circle. After our food came, we asked to see the Chef to ask him what the heck he was doing in a place like this?? It is a bar/social/late night scene that turns into a dining place and vice versa depending on the time of day. THE FOOD IS INCREDIBLE! It is served on "social" plates much like tapas but each dish could well be an individual serving as well. We had the Kale salad (great!), the short ribs (incredible) and the loster quinoa (awesome) and the brussel sprouts (out of this world) and some good wine (Pino Gris). Don't walk---run to this place which I will do when I return to DC and I suggest following this Chef---he has it down and I understand has other restaurants that would be worth investigating. He is modern and spearheading a new trend in dining. What fun!
Our food was delicious and I thought the prices were great. The price for what you got was amazing. The only issue is that they were out of almost all the beers they only about five beers to choose from and only one cider. Otherwise it was definitely worth going there and I high suggest the Crispy Fried Pork Belly and shrimp and grits they were to die for!
there were two big parties and it was hard to enjoy dinner. The bar is pretty loud and distracting, too.
The food was outstanding. Tapas are always a favorite that you order five or six to share. Drinks were good. Service was not that great. Our waitress was slow to greet us. She was slow to get our drinks. My friend ordered another martini and she never brought it and we had to ask where it was and she said "oh I didn't know he wanted it now". It was not very busy but the food was outstanding! Give this a try for some delicious food in DuPont Circle.
We enjoyed our dining experience at the Gryphon! We had friends visiting from Switzerland where meat dishes are super expensive. The dishes we tried were well seasoned, beautifully plated and delicious! Our server was friendly and well-versed in the menu but not so much the wine list. We especially liked the small bites options so we could sample more of the extensively varied menu!
The service is exeptional, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
The food was good, but definitely is not a stakehouse, the aged sirlon has an averege taste.
Quite a variety of small plate items which satisfied our hungry appetites.
We had a good time. I liked the ambience and the space. Thank you!
Unfortunately there is not a lot of variety to the menu but the dish that I ordered was pretty tasty!
The Gryphon is so noisy that to have a conversation with the other members of your party, even those sitting next to you, you must shout. Parking is difficult in the neighborhood of the Gryphon so valet parking is a handy thing to have and to advertise. Unfortunately the valet parking is not provided by the restaurant but by a third party. The third party valet parking company services several other restaurants on the same block and they valets are not located in front of the Gryphon. Not having been there before, I had no way of knowing this an I ended up circling the block in search of a parking spot. I passed by the Gryphon and my wife had the manager come out to my car who explained the valet parking situation (he was not sure the valets had arrived yet). Also the valet parking is not free (as is most valet parking at restaurants) and is cash up front only. For those of us who no longer carry cash this is a problem. If the food were really good I would not have written this review but the food is not really good, only mediocre, the portions are small and there is not much of a selection. For a restaurant that is promoted as a great steakhouse, the few selections and their size is an affront to steak lovers. As a member of the committee to preserve and promote great steakhouses, I am compelled to report the Gryphon to the steakhouse police for impersonating a steakhouse.
I brought a group here after a business meeting, happy hour time on a Friday night, and it was the conclusion of everyone in the group that the food was excellent, the service was good, but the place was just too loud for that time of day. Sure, it's the weekend, and sure, the place is a big hot spot late, but we were barely able to have a conversation. One notch down on the volume wouldn't hurt the atmosphere any, but would make it more pleasant for those who are there for the great food and proximity to Dupont Circle. The small plates were all wonderful, people were happy with their cuts of meat, and our server was generally attentive (although had she arrived one minute earlier, we could have had another happy hour round, as they were inflexible on that -- don't know if it was planned that way but was frustrating). Anyway, I would go back but not if I had a group who wanted to talk at all.
Our server was friendly and helpful and the food was amazing. I tried the fried gator and waffle which was delicious. It was a little loud so at our small table for two we had to speak on the loud side so we could hear each other. Even with the noise, we would definitely go back!
Great food. Turns into a lounge after dinner on the weekend. Great atmosphere. Wait staff is excellent, very attentive. Always enjoy going back. Short ribs are delicious and steaks cooked perfectly.
The food and service were top notch. The servers were very attentive and our waitress made great pairing recommendations. The food was amazing and portion sizes were just right. Overall, it was a great dining experience.
Despite the ability to make a 4:30 RSVP on Open Table, The Gryphon changed their hours six months ago to now they don't open until 5. We did not realize this and showed up early. BUT the restaurant still sat us and still gave us excellent service. I've been to the Gryphon for dinner and happy hour several times and I have never been disappointed. It's a great, stylish restaurant and who doesn't love oysters! (Which they have for half off on the raw bar during happy hour.) Go with co-workers, friends or a chic date. It's a nice, trendy spot on Connecticut Ave.
Food was amazing. Next time I want to stay for the lounge party after.
Went to Gryphon for dinner with a colleague. Interesting place. They clearly have steak as their main entrees, but then have a sort of tapas menu that you can also choose from (1-3 dishes is their recommendation).
Wednesday are great for meat and wine lovers. Order 2 large cut steaks and you get a bottle of wine for free.
Apparently at 11 PM the place turns into a nightclub.
Waitress was extremely nice and attentive. Made sure that we were looked after well.
