It was good
Second time we tried to go and have a drink as well as dinner and they were completely closed. We had a 7pm reservation and they turned my friend away. Please be more considerate of your guests. We are also in the industry and understand slow times and things happen but a phone call would have been nice. The first time we made a reservation the place was closed.
Turned into a 2hr meal because there was only one person taking orders, serving, busing tables, etc for the entire place- poor guy!
Booked a reservation here and the host at the time told us we should go elsewhere for brunch. We were the only people in the restaurant. We sat down and asked about the brunch menu. We were told they only had certain items on the menu and then he told us to go to another place. Very odd interaction. We didn’t end up ordering or eating any food.
The Gringo was a great place with awesome food and a cute seating area. Will definitely be back!
Unfortunately, the service was very slow. It took us an hour to get our appetizer and by that time it was late so we just decided to go home. I've been to The Gringo one other time (pre-covid) and the service was slow then too. I wanted to give it another chance but after this time I probably won't be back. The food is really good but you can find better tacos for cheaper.
Service was hard to find and it was hard to communicate our wishes - not sure if it was the masks or what? Food was extremely salty and delayed. It ended up coming out cold. I wanted to like it but won’t be back.
I had a confirmed reservation for my husband’s birthday & they were closed. Drove from the burbs to the city for this place. Super disappointing!
Great food, great service! Definitely would recommend.
We had the worst waiter possible and saw two rats in the restaurant.
Patio was perfect for outdoor dining. The
Great times, always
They should probably work on closing reservations for Mondays. A friend and I were excited to make a 5:30 pm reservation on opentable only to find they are closed. I know technology problems arise but it should be addressed.
So today was my first time going there with a few friends and I was highly disappointed. We ordered the quesadilla and told the waiter twice to make sure it’s vegetarian as we are vegetarian. He said yes it was all fine. We get our food, after eating most of the quesadilla we discovered that it has fried pork skin. We mentioned this to the waiter and he apologized and owned up to his mistake. We were like it’s okay mistakes happen and we understand. Moving on I had ordered a drink and two sips in, I had to return it. The drink wasn’t good and I ended up getting something else. At the end our waiter said he will give us free dessert as a sorry for messing up our order. We were thankful but when the bill came at the end...not going to lie but I was a bit shocked. He ended up charging us for the quesadilla which he messed up on and the drink that I didn’t drink and returned. The dessert was $5...which he took off. I thought to myself I would have gladly paid for the dessert over paying for something I didn’t drink or properly eat. I felt disgusted eating pork skin considering I’m vegetarian. However I didn’t create a scene and paid the full bill due to Covid also. I won’t be returning to this restaurant because at the end of the day it’s about principle. You don’t mess up someone’s order and than charge them for it.
We were seated at a dirty table, but told someone would be there to clean it soon. Unfortunately no one greated us for 10 minutes. The bathrooms were out of tissues and hand tissues in both bathrooms, and when we received our food it was cold!
They weren't even open! How is this possible??????
We were really impressed with The Gringo. They have a great patio and followed all the rules regarding social distancing and Covid precautions. As a result, we were very comfortable, had some drinks and ate incredible tacos! If you are a togas person and looking for a great nation vibe, The Gringo is your place.
We had Devanta as our server and he was absolutely amazing! Both he and Manny made us feel very welcome - so hospitable. We will be back for sure!
Great and delicious taco place, must try! The margaritas are very delicious as well.
Food and drinks were great! Our waiter was definitely overworked and had too many tables, but overall we enjoyed the food, drinks and ambiance!
I understand that it’s COVID season so the ambiance is a little off. But we chose outdoor seating because we thought it would be lively. We got there and we were the only ones there. Can’t blame the the restaurant for that. But it was so awkward. Being the only people there would not have been a problem but there was no music, just dead silence other than ourselves. Why not at least try to make the restaurant feel a little exciting? There was one waiter and just us. It felt like I was eating in my backyard. More people showed up as we were leaving but I felt bad for them because I knew they would feel the same way we did. It just felt sad. Maybe it’s a lesson to just stay inside through all this.. but if this restaurant is trying to stay in business.. at least try! Turn on some lights and put on some music.
The food and ambience was perfect!!
Our server was amazing!! We sat on the patio for my friends birthday and he brought us shots and made sure we always had a full drink!
Great food, positive vibes and excellent service. Made a quarantine birthday a great experience!
They were NOT open when we made our reservation. I was very annoyed and frustrated that they booked reservations when they weren’t open. There were several parties there for their reservation and everything was locked up. Ridiculous
If I could give 0 for a service review I would. We were the only table in the restaurant and had to ask for service
Cancelled reservation day of, due to a private party
Decent food, but terrible service and ambiance. Was tempted to just get up and leave several times. Waiter gave my friend a hard time/shamed them for ordering a dish in an attempt to discourage them from ordering it. He later admitted it was because the cook didn't feel like making the dish. No apologies were made or attempts to remedy this. Furthermore, lots of disturbing/unappetizing content on the TVs that made it hard to eat (fishes being gutted, a program about facial reconstruction, etc.) They should be more aware/in-control of what programming they're presenting diners with. I nearly lost my appetite. Would not recommend - there are a million other restaurants like this one in Chicago and you'll have a better experience at one of those.
We used to love this place - the night before cinco de Mayo and it takes 3 hours for 4 tacos to be made. Awful.
Really good food, great prices. Came for Sunday lunch and they had a lot of items missing from the bar. Maybe ran out from Saturday night? Service was a little slow and some of the food didn’t come and the server had to check in the back. Other than that, good experience
What a great place! Unique tacos, amazing margaritas. What more could you ask for?
Gave 1 star reviews across the board due to the fact we didn't even get to eat at The Gringo. We had a 10:30 AM reservation and confirmed the reservation the day prior. Showed up for the reservation and the place wasn't even open! Nor did they appear to be opening any time soon. The door was locked....chairs were up on the tables....and no one was in sight.
Great tacos and churros!
Food was delicious! We went for brunch and tried the Benedict, steak and eggs, burrito, fundito, and a churro pancake. Must try!!
Went with a group of 10, had to sit outside cause indoor was small. Food wasn’t bad, actually enjoyed the brunch menu. Drinks were kinda expensive, but churros were great.
Claims all tacos except one are gluten-free on the menu and then brought me a taco that should have been gluten-free in a flour tortilla. When I asked them about it, they basically blamed me because I didn’t stipulate that I was g-free! Didn’t think I need to as menu clearly lists everything that is g-free and I ordered accordingly.
They comped some of our meal but I still can’t reco this place.
Tacos not that tasty either.
The ambiance and environment is as good as it gets. Can get better tacos elsewhere in Chicago
