The Grill Room & Bar
It’s great for a la carte. They undercook the meat. Just keep that in mind when ordering. I’ll be going again.
If you go, be sure to avoid any entrees that are not beef centered (eg the trout) since they are likely to be tasteless and poorly prepared. Also, plan to have to shout at each other. The music is LOUD and combined with other distractions such as their TV and the people at the bar and the lack of any noise absorbing acoustic design, conversation is difficult. Finally, be prepared to pay top dollar for only medium level food.
Fantastic food and drinks! We love it and highly recommend trying it if you haven’t already!
A 50 dollar steak and I was disappointed that it lacked flavor.
This is an amazing place, especially for a celebration!
All three meals served cold. Hanger Steak very small and potatoes very greasy.
The food and service were excellent. I had the scallop and lobster risotto special. It was good, but I prefer the wood-fired scallop preparation on the regular menu. The lobster in the risotto was generous and cooked perfectly. Our server was attentive and accurately described each dish. We look forward to returning the next time we're in Portland.
Appetizers and the drinks at the bar were great. Meal at the table was excellent for the choices and quality. Only problem was the waiter didn’t clean the crumbs and wipe the table off between serving dinner and dessert. Just plopped the dessert down on a dirty tabletop.
Our meal was excellent. This was our second time there and it was as good as our first time.
The scallops were cooked to perfection. The wine was good. My husband got the special- it was very good but maybe overpriced. We liked the atmosphere, lively but relaxing. I would definitely go again and recommend to others.
Perfect is hard to beat. Location inside and out were ideal. Who doesn’t like lobster mashed potatoes. They serve Lunch on tap. Ariana from Texas gave southern hospitality with grace and style but no accent. Fun
Food was good up until my steak came out. It was undercooked and had a funny taste. My husband’s steak carpaccio had no flavor at all.
Wonderful!! The bartenders were awesome!!!
The Grill Room & Bar had some nice reviews so my wife and I were looking forward to a nice meal. Service was good, but the food and drink did not live up to expectations. The bar served prosecco from a tap which arrived flat and flavorless. Prime sirloin at $48 a la carte was tough and cooked at too high a temp. Grill chef had flames shooting almost to the ceiling. Scallops were requested to be cooked throughout and well seared, they arrived underdone and not seared at all. Baked potato was very undercooked and hard inside-inedible as was the customer's who was sitting at the next table.
Noise level was really high, temperature in the restaurant was also very cold. Most diners had to sit with their coats on. Pretty disappointing for a $200 plus dinner for two.
Great! This is my go to steak restaurant in town. It’s a little pricy but worth it for the quality. Plus their happy hour deals are amazing!!!
I was really disappointed with my visit to the grill room, having been here before and enjoyed it. The hostess was rather rude on her insistence for our party to finalize our bill at the bar because she would not seat 2 of the guest who had arrived a little early. Then she proceeded to place 4 large men into a very cramped booth. We requested to be moved and were told that the table behind was reserved for a 8:00 reservation, however we arrived at 5:30 and were moved to a slightly large booth. The steaks we ordered were good but the enhancements as they are called for some lobster at $18.00 was a abysmal. It was a small claw and maybe a piece of the tail meat. The service was not that spectacular either. Our waitress seemed annoyed anytime we had question or requested another item. The apps were not stellar either the foie gras was supposed to be seared and it burnt and the grilled oysters were small and did not have much flavor. I was rather embarrassed as the finner guests I was with were business partners. I think management needs to address customer service and portion size.
A kind of hit and miss experience started with waiter's attitude who was not pleased with the fact we had made a reservation so he had to pass us over to a coworker.
Food was mediocre as well as drinks, cocktails and wine by carafe was good priced but not much flavours.
Food was very good but interior was ridiculously dark. I like mood lighting but there was no lighting near our table.
The mussels were amazing, the steaks were cooked perfectly, and the martinis were some of the best we’ve ever had! Love this place!
This was my third time at the Grill Room. The food is absolutely delicious!
It's simply too loud. Some very good food and fun to see the kitchen, but still... too loud!
The food was great. It was a bit noisy there. I guess I was looking for more of quiet place. Service was fantastic as well very attentive and friendly.
Overpriced for both the experience and the food, unfortunately. Meat was excellent, but sides were not hot. Drinks were not the greatest either. Ordered Pork with apple chutney, but chutney was nothing more than carmalized apple pieces (no sauce to speak of). No reason for food not to come out hot, since we had a 5:30 seating and only 4-5 tables were seated. Way too expensive for this experience, especially with the options available in Portland and beyond.
Our group of six were comfortably seated at a long booth near a front window. Our server was experienced, thorough and informative. Three of us ordered steak, one the salmon entree, judged very good; one a hamburger- which got high marks; and one ordered a pizza with goat cheese, burned on the bottom and disappointing overall, which arrived late to the table after all other entrees.
The shared fried calimari and salads were judged very good, as were the vegetables.
The steak was judged all right, but was not prime, and not worth the price.
Overall, we found the Grill Room overpriced and lacking value for money.
If you are going to buy highed food, this is the place. You can show up and feel welcome in your casual wear, and get service you’d expect at a fine dinning restaurant. The pulled pork and duck are too good to describe. We also had the scallops, and they were cooked perfectly. Very filling.
Will go again!!!
We had a beautiful bday dinner for my boyfriend while staying in Portland. We cannot wait to return!
Risotto was tasteless and I thought the beets were are, but maybe that’s the way they are supposed to be? My pork was just ok. My friend did not like her onion soup, mostly bread on top. The other two meals were very good.
I would recommend to friends because I have been several times before and everything has been perfect but this time not so much. First of all, the server did not discuss the flow of the menu, nor did he discuss the style of cooking the meats. My food was room temp at best and my partner’s burger was a mess, the bread broke down, the meat was med-rare (he asked for med but received no guidance) and the pile of soggy, over-salted fries was obnoxious. I got the trout which I know has bones in it but no warning from the server which would’ve been courteous to mention. The other diners with us had undercooked steak (because the cooking method was not explained as it has been every other time I’ve been) and the tuna as recommended to be rare, which was agreed to by the customer was actually med to med-well. We spent a lot of money and were very disappointed. I raved about the experience we would have and unfortunately, you did not deliver. Additionally no wine was offered to pair with our food which I do find is a nice touch if the party is interested in hearing. I also had a bit of a stomach ache and some unpleasant side effects as did my partner after we left, which could be unrelated but it was a little odd.
The ambiance, our table, and the noise level were all comfortable.
We’ll probably go back again but it won’t be our first pick.
My steak was properly cooked, but it just didn't live up to the $48 price tag. My dates steak was under done, and her shrimp were over cooked.
A pretty good meal, but we expected more at this price.
Back for a second time and just as enjoyable as I remember. Tuna was cooked exactly as ordered and the risotto was fabulous. My friend’s pork chop was uniquely flavored and delicious. Creative and extensive cocktail offerings. We both really enjoyed the lively atmosphere and cozy brick and wood decor. A real treat...
The food and service were top notch. I sat at one of several tables near the bar, and the noise was almost unendurable. I would like to dine at Th Grill Room again, but even if I ask to be seated at a booth (a bit farther from the bar), I’ll likely bring ear plugs.
Had a great meal. The lobster mashed potatoes had large chunks of lobster which was unexpected. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the appetizers we got were excellent.
The server was attentive and the ambiance was nice.
All around a great meal.
Delicious as always. Best meal of Restaurant Week 2019
Was there for the restaurant week menu - shrimp was delicious as was the steak - perfectly cooked, really good flavor.
I tried the Restaurant Week menu which was a fabulous 3 course meal(shrimp appetizer, scallops/risotto/spinach entree, pistachio gelato dessert). Dirty martini was great with bleu cheese stuffed olives. My husband decided to order off the regular menu and was disappointed with the ribeye, but enjoyed the clam chowder and fries. Overall, had a lovely evening!
Server was excellent - food/drinks were great. Restaurant met all my needs in terms of the reservation. Love the Grill Room and their staff! We are regulars
Hands-down one of the best dinners I have had in quite a while, everything was perfect, as a chef I find myself sometimes a bit Let down when someone might recommend a place, my wife is from Maine and has been wanting to take me in here for years. so glad we went well up here . value ambiance ,service ,personality and quality of food is spot on .a must stop if you’re in Portland.
We have been customers for 15 years. This was by far our most disappointing experience. Many of our favorite menu items have been eliminated (chicken, bisque) or changed (chocolate cake). The worst part was every entrée (four of them) was undercooked, despite each of us ordering a temperature over what we were looking to receive. The consolation was an extra side of mashed potatoes. The only saving grace of the evening was our server, Chelsea, who remained professional and did the best she could with a difficult and uncomfortable situation, with little to no help from her manager. Certainly wasn't a $250 experience. We won't be back anytime soon. :(
This place is ballin’
In all fairness we love Grill Room. We have dined there 100+ times. Unfortunately this past weekend was the worst experience we have had. They do have a new head chef. Our service was not great. My Brussels sprouts were served to me burnt. And my husbands ribeye was the worst cut of meat I have ever seen. With the price of the steak, why that specific steak would even be served to someone is beyond me. Back to the service. Shawn was less than attentive. Did not apologize for the burnt Brussels sprouts and by the time I received a new side our dinner was over. My husband barely ate the steak because it was the fattiest ribeye ever. Shawn asked my husband if he wanted a box which he replied no... the server should have noticed a grown man didn’t eat or want this steak and should have asked if it was not good. We are not ones to complain about food, ever! My friend had to say “he’s won’t mention it but that steak was awful.” His response was “I’ll let the chef know and walked away. No compensation on our bill whatsoever. 4 ppl with a small bill of $300+ (the 4 of us have racked a bill much larger) that being said we will NOT be going back to GR for a long time.
