The Grill from Ipanema - DC Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately for our waitress, the kitchen simply did not deliver on what the menu advertised. One of our party ordered their mean medium rare, but instead it was delivered well done. He asked for a new plate, and that was basically seared on the outside but fully raw on the inside. After asking they cook that meat up a little more, it was finally at the right temperature. Sadly, it wasn't the original cut of meat that he requested and that we were paying for. Our waitress was sweet and helpful but there was nothing she could do. Overall, not worth the $25 per entree price tag.
We went for the Carnaval party event but with dinner first. Reservations made for 8pm as recommend by the carnaval flyer on facebook. Food was good and it was enough to be full and happy at the end. Good Brazilian food. When we arrived we were told that we would have to vacate our table by 9:30pm for the party set up.-- that was fine. We had a 8pm reservation and the music was going to start soon after that. We were taken to the room that would hold the live music, but then the hostess moved to a table that was completely outside the event room.-- My thought was that now the 9:30pm vacate the table was negated. Right????
9:30pm comes and goes, we are enjoying some drinks and waiting for the show that was scheduled for 10pm. The crowd is starting to gather for the event-- bar is filled, tables are filled with people. Now the hostess comes over and says, "I am going to have to take your table from you now because someone has a reservation". We are not done with our drinks, haven't seen our waitress in over 30 minutes, and have still not paid our check. Every other table is around finished with their food, some having drinks, and other just waiting for the show that obviously will not start on time. No. We will not move. Who does that?-- have you ever been to a restaurant and be told that you have to leave your table? We did not leave, but now I felt obligated to order more drinks and food. Okay-- I wanted to drinks, but not more food. She also did not tell any other table (even the ones that arrived before us) to vacate their tables.
Overall the food is good, service was good until it got close to the event and our waitress got too busy to attend to us. -- not her fault. It was poor preparation and planning by the management. Of course the music did not start until 11pm. What was the deal with the old man singing on stage with an iPad because he didn't know the lyrics to any of the songs? And the neon sunglasses?? WTF???
We went in kind of on a whim for restaurant week and ended up loving this neighbourhood sport. The food was delicious - the portions were huge, you could easily split on entree between two people. They had a wide variety of options, I had a hard time picking because everything looked good.
Overall, great under the radar local spot with great food and yummy drinks.
This place is great for large groups and birthdays.
My family had a table for 20(yes you read that correctly we had TWENTY PEOPLE).
1. took our large reservation and gave us a follow up confirmation call for our reservation 2 hours before our reservation the day of
2. had AWESOME customer service: very polite and answered all of our questions, helped us with menu choices
3. has a wonderful atmosphere: they play wonderful music in the back ground, the lights at slightly dim and they have a lit tree of paradise (has little white lights on it), white table linen, beautiful decor and cultural paintings, clean silverware and glassware, clean restrooms, clean and clear floors
4. has wonderful and flavorful food: wonderful menu options-seafood, meats, EVEN NON-MEAT OPTIONS ....the food is moist and flavorful, the menu has beautiful descriptions of the food
5. the prices are budget friendly: there is something for everyone's budget(small to big) on this menu
6. for birthdays they sing happy birthday to you and bring out a dessert
*please know that it's hard to find parking in this area. There is a parking garage around the corner from the restaurant or you can find street parking, but space is tight and it is a busy surrounding area*
THIS RESTAURANT IS DEFINITELY WORTH GOING TO!
My friends and I had a great Saturday brunch here! The staff was very very friendly and attentive - our mimosa glasses were never empty and they even gave us refills after we paid our bill! They had a lot of great food options but we found our meals to be slightly hit and miss. I loved the spicy pork sausage from the brunch menu, but my friend ordered the fried chicken dish and was slightly disappointed. It wasn't bad, it just didn't blow her mind. If you get the 3 course brunch, I definitely recommend going with the soup instead of the salad for the 1st course and the banana instead of the rice pudding for the dessert.
Initially, waitress was pushy and frustrating. Told literally 3 times “I am waiting for my husband” but continually asking if I was ready to order and did I want wine menu. I don’t know if I (or we) (or he) wants wine, I am *waiting for my husband.*
Would give 3.5 stars if possible. Ambience nice. Remaining service pleasant/decent. Just do not pushy staff or being rushed. Reservations btw were early enough there was no need to rush they didn’t have back up or waiting folks, in fact - most of our meal it was half empty.
I was surprised I had a bad experience based on reviews. Issues were
1. both dishes we ordered were terrible.
2. one dish was actually based on server strong recommendation (she encouraged me to order it as opposed to what I originally told her I wanted). yet it was still bad!
3. I made my reservation via OpenTable, showed up on time with my wife. They somehow changed my reservation to "one person" despite two of us showing up as planned, messing with my Open Table points.
4. They completely forgot to bring the appetizer we ordered.
5. Way too pricey for food that was subpar
Upside: they graciously surprised us with a delicious chocolate desert due to the forgotten appetizer.
We hadn't been to The Grill From Ipanema in a few years. Our recent visit reminded us why it is one of our favorites. They still serve the best Caipirinha in the DC area (and one of the best anywhere), though it seemed that there was more ice in the glass than we remembered from past visits. The menu includes pretty much something for everyone; neither meat lovers nor vegetarians will be disappointed. Our party of three had chicken (the Frango Vinicius de Moraes , a spicy dish, is awesome), beef, and shrimp for our entrees. While fried yuca is plentiful in the DC area and usually does not stand out, don't skip it here.
The service was one of the slowest that i have ever experienced.
Took them over 7 minutes for someone to show up at the doors to seat us.
Took them 13 minutes to show to our table to take our orders.
Food was late over 24 minutes.
Paying the check was even slower and it took forever. They looked like they were like ignoring the table and we had to look around for anyone to take care of it.
This is a Brazilian restaurant which served delicious food. The menu offers seafood, beef, chicken and vegetable entrees. Each of the three of us enjoyed our food very much. Mine provided dinner and lunch the next day. The service was friendly and attentive. The only drawback was the sound of the blender making special drinks. Perhaps that could be moved away from the bar area and into the kitchen. I would happily go back .
3 out of our party of 6 ordered medium rare steak. All 3 were over cooked and waiter acted annoyed with us from the time he took our first drink order to when we paid. He never mentioned they add a 20 % tip to group of 6. He only deserved 10 %. Won't be going back.
We dropped in for Brazilian tapas and were not disappointed. The abacate maraja (avacodo with shrimp) and bolinho de feijoada (black bean croquettes) were particularly good, but the mexilhao a carioca (green mussels) and mandioca frita (fried yuca) were amazing!
