The Great Shefford
The pub is managed by the team behind King Charles Tavern in Newbury and The Broad Face Abingdon. Led by Joshua Khan, Georgiana Caras (General Manager) and Kevin Mulraney (Head Chef), our aim is to offer a friendly and relaxed environment where everybody is welcome.
As this is the Valley of the Racehorse, we’ve set aside a special area of welcome for those who want to keep their eyes on events on the turf in our dedicated Racing Lounge, with wide-screen TV and up-to-date editions of the sporting press.
We are open seven days a week, from morning through to late evening, serving lunch and dinner as well as simpler food offerings such as bar snacks and sandwiches.
- Surfaces sanitized between seatings
- Common areas deep cleaned daily
- Digital, disposable or sanitized menu provided
- Sanitizer or wipes provided for customers
- Contactless payment available
- Limited number of seated diners
- Distancing maintained in common areas
- Extra space between tables
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
Well covered and heated for our weather eating outside. Good food and service reasonable cost
Originally got seated on bar type seats but the waitress moved us to comfier seating so that was fantastic enjoyed all our meals and felt warm with the heaters :)
Great place for food next to a stream birds chirping in the background and ducks swimming around staff very accommodating food was very nice and the new covering from awnings was a nice touch will be visiting again.
The menu was fairly limited and eating outside in the cold means food gets cold very quickly however my dessert (sticky toffee pudding) was served in a cold bowl and this did not help. I ordered the Pan Fried Plaice and I would like to say this was cooked as perfectly as it could possible be and I recommend this choice..maybe the accompanying salad could be a little more interesting.
Water from the rain had been sitting on the awning and completely saturated one guest on another table when it got too heavy for the awning to hold and he and his chair were so wet it got to the point he had to drive home and change. One of my guests at our table had a very lucky escape when the same happened over us.
Hopefully these are just lockdown issues and I am sure once restrictions get eased it will also reflect for this pub.
Myself, my wife and daughter had a very positive experience at our recent visit to Shefford pub - we had not been for a while and decided to try out - we were not disappointed. They have made a huge effort to allow outdoor dining. Food was excellent and great value for money complimented by fast and efficient service. We had a lovely time, thank you.
Fantastic food exellent service and great location....I highly recommend the steak with peppercorn sauce. Cooked as I asked lovely and tender and succulent...my mouth watering it was that good
Amazing evening again! Good food and great service!!
Good food, attentive and helpful staff, but very disappointed with our table. Had booked for a 40th Birthday celebration, which was indicated on the booking. We were put on a table next to a pile of building waste with cones on top in the car park. It was a very rainy day and we got wet. There were two tables in the middle that were by heaters and I asked to be moved to one of those but was told they were reserved. I had booked around a month in advance and would have hoped to have been on one of those reserved tables. The pub couldn't help the fact that it rained, but the position of the only table available to us was very disappointing. I would recommend they consider some screening of the car park in future to make it a more enjoyable experience and although they have clearly spent a lot of money on new shades to protect the diners, they unfortunately don't work very well when it rains. The rain was coming off them in waterfalls into the dining area.
Six of us met here for a post-lockdown reunion. It was pouring with rain but the pub's newly inaugurated awning was nearly up to the job - we were seated right in the middle so were kept dry; heaters and blankets tried to keep us warm. Service was prompt, attentive and friendly. The warm asparagus salad was delicious, as was the lamb curry - lots of lovely lean meat. Others had broccoli soup, steak pie, fish and chips, all adjudged to be good and warming - not really a day for cold salads! Sticky toffee pudding did its rib-sticking job, rhubarb and custard millefeuille was unusual and tasty, and the selection of beers and wines were good. Good coffee, too. The only problem really came from the wind and the rain: it might help if there were a barrier between the car park and the terrace, both to cut the crosswinds and to improve the view, especially with building works going on across the road. But all in all, a good meal and friendly service - thank you!
Very friendly staff, a lovely setting and good food.
Fantastic service😊 food was to die for
Staff were so lovely and friendly.
Extremely slow service and unexciting food. We were disappointed with the experience.
Was a pleasure to eat there will be booking again soon
Cant ever fault this restaurant ever it's in the heart of my home where I grew up very understanding caring staff as I was extremely suffering from pollen that day and couldn't finish and enjoy the meal ! I've had more meals there and it's always been served hot , quality meat and produce no faults just perfection very relaxed and enjoyable experience every time we go even if it's fir a quick cheeky drink to.
Lovely place in a lovely setting, just let down slightly by the food on my visit and although i have said yes to would recommend, there are other places that i would recommend first
Great food, excellent service, reasonable prices. The outdoor area is spacious and lovely - located next to a small river. We really enjoyed the asparagus salad, fish of the day, and beef pie. Highly recommended.
Lovely setting by the river. The service was very slow which was a real shame. Some of the food was great, but the watercress salad with the steak was inedible. Some of it was also very cold. Great deserts though.
This establishment is excellent. COVID friendly and very well organised
The staff are very friendly and attentive
The place is scrupulously clean
Food is well presented, cooked well and delicious
Drinks are served at your table
All in all our experience of The Great Shefford left us in no doubt that we will be going back again and very soon
Lovely riverside setting, good food good ambience good waiting staff, Bellini was not good sadly, probably should have sent it back
We were very well looked after. The service was friendly, proficient and safe. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and all the work they had put into the terrace to make it special sitting right by the Lambourn.
Had lunch twice in the last week and had a thoroughly lovely time, good food, well presented and good service
The staff were welcoming and friendly. We felt safe as all the Covid protocols were in place and observed. The service was good - didn’t have to wait long for our meals and the food was delicious .
Well priced for very good quality pub food. Friendly helpful service and well located for a lovely countryside walk
Lovely location, nice building and good food. Nice ample outdoor seating.
Look forward to returning when can go inside.Outside fine and felt safe.Could look bit prettier, need more heaters.Staff friendky and efficient.
This was my second visit in 2 days as I was so impressed the day before. The food was excellent, tasted amazing, the only downside was having to eat outside which is only because of covid, they do have blankets if you ask... excellent!! I’ll be going again
It was a great meal, the food and service was excellent. Shame it was a bit cold but otherwise enjoyable. Will come again
Lovely pub garden but service seemed slow and left waiting a long time for meals and drinks.
We were well looked after on a very cold April evening by Georgi and the team, food delicious and great value. They even had blankets for extra warmth! We loved the new covered outdoor seating area with plenty of tables and room, despite temperatures of 5c we ended up staying late!
Great food reasonable prices and friendly service... I can’t wait until I can go here and dine indoors!!
Went back here the next evening as it was so good.
First night after lockdown, lovely food, great staff. Will be back very soon x
Great evening - had fab fish and chips and lamb curry. Great food and great service!
We didn't have any food so cannot comment on that. Sat outside so fairly quiet but good atmosphere and lovely setting with flowers and the River Lambourn with ducks nesting. It was a lovely afternoon.
Most amazing food. Customer service top class. Everything is spot on .Definitely be back .
Lovely meal in. Probably the best burger I have ever had in a pub.
Friendly and efficient service.
I’d never been to The Great Shefford before but chose it as a halfway house to meet up with family. We’d booked separate tables but the staff sat us close enough so we could chat. The food was absolutely delicious, we all highly rated our meals. The service was in obtrusive but efficient and friendly. We would definitely return.
Lovely evening at The Great Shefford - the shin of beef was superb. Such a shame the current rules couldn't allow more people to enjoy an evening out.
Great food and friendly atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
Atmosphere was really nice, staff and their service was 5*. Food was really great, we will definitely be back. 10/10 from us. Thank you.
An amazing meal , while feeling completely safe. All COVID rules followed. Looking forward to going back .
