The Great Shefford
The pub is managed by the team behind King Charles Tavern in Newbury and The Broad Face Abingdon. Led by Joshua Khan, Georgiana Caras (General Manager) and Kevin Mulraney (Head Chef), our aim is to offer a friendly and relaxed environment where everybody is welcome.
As this is the Valley of the Racehorse, we’ve set aside a special area of welcome for those who want to keep their eyes on events on the turf in our dedicated Racing Lounge, with wide-screen TV and up-to-date editions of the sporting press.
We are open seven days a week, from morning through to late evening, serving lunch and dinner as well as simpler food offerings such as bar snacks and sandwiches.

Great service food was lovely thank you
Service was slow both for drinks and food between starter and main took an age. We were only asked if we want 1 drink so had to ask for a wine list.
A lovely evening.. Great atmosphere, amazing food and friendly efficient service. Would highly recommend this pub for every occasion.
Very warm welcome right from the start, all staff attentive and friendly. Atmosphere was great, place was busy but without the sense of chaos.
Food was outstanding- very tasty, well balanced menu.
Value reflected the quality of the food, which was fantastic.
Book here, you won’t be disappointed.
Some builders noise, but overall, a really good experience
First visit to the Great Shefford, really welcoming, Miss Jones was a bonus!
Roast beef and chicken were excellent possibly another choice would be the only minor request perhaps a pork or lamb. White dwarf beer excellent.
Nothing was too much trouble, really really enjoyable, shame we live so far away! However having checked our bill all change, it’s really disappointing to see the extra gravy was charged for especially as the gravy provided was minimal. This strikes as being rather penny pinching.
I only gave the food 3 stars because I was so disappointed when we waited so long to order to then find out 2 of the 5 starters were not available & one of the mains. We waited 1hr 15mins for our starters!! The staff were amazing & very aware we had waited a long time. The waiter we had was very attentive & very apologetic. I think they were under staffed. Like everywhere. We would definitely go back as it deserves a second chance.
We waited 45 minutes from order to arrival of first course. Kitchen clearly understaffed.
One first course was very poor, with overcooked fish full of bones.
Had the set menu, disappointed with quantity, £12.50 for cheese board a ridiculous price, desserts to expensive
Excellent meal , quality ingredients , fantastic service from very attentive and knowledgeable staff. We strongly recommend a visit to this restaurant as great all-round value for money.
We had Sunday lunch.Starters we’re superb as was the tarte tatin for dessert.
However the venison in the main course was too tough and fatty for me which I didn’t eat. However another portion was brought out which was better.
Everything else was fine , friendly service and trying to please .
First time, the pub is welcoming, cost, beautifully decorated, the staff are friendly and warm but without being overly fussy or in your face, the food is a joy - delicious, so beautifully presented too, we loved it so much we re-booked there and then for a birthday celebration in a few weeks as their private dining are looks amazing and will be a real treat for our Mum's 70th! Keep doing what you are doing! :-)
We booked for 7 people for Sunday lunch - The waiting staff were friendly and the place was very nice.
Unfortunately the service was slow as we were seated before 2pm and our food did not arrive until 3.15.
We ordered 4x fish and chips which was OK and 2 Roast meals Venison and Beef. The meat was very rare and unfortunately not the finest cuts as the beef was chewy and not digestible and the Venison a strange texture! The vegetables came in a Yorkshire pudding which was nice but the roast potatoes were hard and cold!
This was a great find for us, travelling from Witney, Fairford and south of Bath to meet there. The Sunday roast was exceptional and the gravy and cauliflower cheese were outstanding, as was the bread and butter! A gorgeous warm, crusty loaf for four with whipped butter to start. Tender flavoursome beef. Lovely sorbets all round for pud. The table in the extension looking over the river added to the experience.
Can’t praise the restaurant highly enough. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented.
Service was excellent also..... thank you.
Amazing new chef has taken the food up a level. Slightly small menu but everything we tried was above par. Lovely wine as well.
Lovely place to eat. Immaculate and helpful friendly staff. Menu is more highbrow than most pubs. Would return but for a special occasion, not just for a quick lunch.
Not much choice for vegetarians.Had battered cod, found it a bit grey and the batter soggy.
Great lunch on Monday. Lovely fresh food and really good service. Had the chicken sandwich and side salad and tea and coffee.
The service by the staff is exceptional from the time you enter to when you leave, our Sunday lunch was perfect(would have liked a few more roast potatoes) the deserts are very nice but rather expensive having said that it would not deter us from not going back.
Joshua the finance director of the pub introduced himself to us which was a nice gesture.
Great food in a lovely pub. I had steak and my partner had venison. Everything was perfect.
Lovely pub and friendly staff. Steak and chips was lovely. Will definitely return.
Popped into the Great Shefford for a Sunday evening meal to check out the new chef. Food was outstanding and service was friendly as ever.
Had an excellent evening enjoying some of the best food I’ve tasted at a high quality pub/restaurant for a long time. Scallop starter has some great twists to it, steak was tender and perfectly cooked, and apple cake pudding was fantastic and completely new. Same for the rest of my friends. Service was friendly and professional. Slight delay between courses but most likely due to quality of food presented. We’ll see you again soon.
Dear John, Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. I am so glad you enjoyed the service & food with us! We are also working on our speed of service, our head chef Sam, is busy training the team & recruiting! We look forward to seeing you again in the future! Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
What a transformation this pub restaurant has undergone! Truly stylish and just the right note of informality. Delicious food attentively served. Would definitely recommend to friends.
The food was lovely but it was a bit expensive, it's not some where we would go regularly but maybe for a special occasion. I've been to the Great Shefford a few times with girlfriends but I find it too expensive now. The service was terrible slow, even to get a drink. I didn't expect that when we had booked a table. The staff and the boss were lovely, but we won't be coming often I'm afraid. Sharon
Dear Sharon, I am glad you do enjoy our food at the Great Shefford. All of our food is fresh & sourced from only the most local suppliers such as Vicar's Game in Newbury, we believe in only the best quality in both food & service. I am extremely disappointed that our service was so slow, I am currently in the process of re-training our front of house team. I do hope you return soon to see the improvements in our team! Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
Good food - but poor service - gave our meals to another couple who failed to point it out until they had eaten them. Our meal wasn’t cooked until they complained and it spoiled our evening. The person in charge was a bit unfriendly. Also got wine wrong on both occasions we have been. They didn’t charge us for the main meal but we would have rather paid and had a nice evening after a busy working week.
We love the food but we won’t return in a hurry.
Dear Elephant, Firstly, please accept my deepest apologies that the service this night was so poor! It saddens me that such simple mistakes had spoiled your evening. I will be sure to re-train the front of house team and management team to ensure this doesn't happen again in the future. I am glad you took the time to leave us such great feedback & I hope the next time you return with us, our entire team will be more on the ball. Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
Lovely ambience. Choice of dining areas. We didn’t want fine dining so opted for the lunchtime bar menu. Fish and chips superb. Staff friendly and attentive.
We went for lunch and were well looked after by the staff. The food was excellent, but the portion sizes are small which reflects the high standard of cuisine. So nice to have imaginative beautifully presented and delicious food. Keep up the good work.
Great food ,attentive service .Looking forward to returning soon .
Beautiful pub in a great location, didn’t order from the new menu as it’s a bit gamey for my taste, we had a burger and sausage and mash, tasty meals but would have been nice to have more than 1 sausage cut into two and a smear of mash. Desserts were great.
Amazing food!! What a treat. We had scallops and venison- as good as anything we have eaten, including Michelin starred.
I felt that there was a disconnect between the quality of the food and the pub though. It’s beautifully refurbished but it’s odd to be eating such high end food with people walking past you to the beer garden carrying beer and without masks.
I also think that having heaters outside is not appropriate given that we are in a climate crisis
The food was exquisitely presented, the staff were charming and professional.
Sunday lunch of roast pork loin was wonderful with good selection of veg cooked to perfection. The pannacotta dessert was to die for. Lovely friendly service to boot. For what more could one ask.
Nice to be able to add gratuity rather than have it taken as in neighbouring village pub.
All around excellent.
The 3 courses we both had were all really excellent but our main courses superb. One of us had the bream and the other the hake and both were cooked perfectly and the sauces with both dished went really well.
Polite customer service
Good varied menu
Great table service .
Dear PeteM, Thank you so much for your kind comments! We look forward to seeing you again soon! Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
Upper mid-range venue with lovely view of a stream at the rear - plenty of indoor and outdoor seating without overcrowding. Good selections of food and drink, staff very attentive, attractive decor.
Yet another great value and exceptional dining experience made all the better buy the very friendly hands on team
Dear Richard, Thank you for your lovely review! It is fantastic to hear the team looked after you so well! I look forward to seeing you in the future, Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
Lovely location good ambiance above average pub menu, well cooked and presented. Friendly helpful staff
