The Golden Bull
We always enjoy this newly refurbished SM Canyon classic. It does tend to be a little loud esp when they play their overhead music. After a certain noise level they need to turn off the music because you are shouting. But food and ambience is great.
Great food. So happy this neighborhood gem is back in business. Food is very good and the staff is excellent.
Steaks were undercooked but that was easily corrected. Our biggest problem was our server disappearing towards the end of our meal. No drink refills, no dessert offering and no way to get our check. We had to flag down other waitstaff to assist us. It ruined what otherwise would have been a very satisfactory dinner.
Great little neighborhood steak place. Recent refurbishment work is really nice, cozy lounge and comfortable dining room. Food was solid and appreciated that the wine list wasn’t silly for prices. Minor knock was that they were down a server on the evening so was a bit slow but staff was great. Highly recommended.
They had some interesting brunch choices. We had the hash with eggs and it was tasty. Our waiter was very nice.
The front room was so noisy it was hard to talk!! Food was good, but it took way too long for the wait person to acknowledge us when we sat down.
This is probably our 5 th time since therr reopening and the service continues to be slow and disorganized. Going to be tough to keep coming back even though I'm familiar with the ownership team

We went here a few times and then last year we stopped in for a drink and it was a funereal atmosphere as the place was closing after so many years. Sad. They said some young club owner type was opening a hookah bar. Then, a few weeks ago, we drove past and noticed that the sign was still the Golden Bull. We went for dinner before a late concert in SM, and were given a choice of sitting in the dining room or the bar. The dining room has been updated and is more elegant than the old red Naugahyde booths from the last century, but we chose a table near the fireplace in the bar.
The service was okay. Our waitress was friendly, but seemed a little overwhelmed, and it took over 20 minutes to get my Old Fashioned, which was very good, but it came right before my meal and I didn't want to drink it with my steak, so the timing was off. I think the bartender was chatting with his customers at the bar and didn't get to the order, and the waitress was also serving tables in the other room
My fiance is vegetarian so she had a nice Caesar salad (no anchovies) and we shared the Asparagus (a great lemony hollandaise-type sauce), and some very garlicky and tasty green beans. I had the a la carte hangar steak. The waitress said they didn't have grilled onions for the steak, which didn't make sense, so I got some onion rings, which were good and not the doughy kind. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare (red, warm center). The food overall was very good.
Love that they kept the bar area the same. It's classic. The restaurant overall is a little loud, and the bar especially, but that's part of eating in the bar area. The fireplace is a great touch.
My negatives are that they raised the prices so it's more of a steak house menu, which is okay, but this feels like more of a neighborhood place, not "fine dining" so it seems the steak, drink and wine prices are a bit high. Street parking is impossible so plan on spending $8 for parking.
Wonderful brunch! It was our first time back since the remodel and we loved sitting in the new dining room. Great food, friendly service, well priced entrees- we look forward to coming back soon! It not well known as a weekend brunch spot so it was not busy but I’m sure once word gets out this will be a neighborhood favorite.
There’s a fun vibe. Like that there’s a mix of people: families ,neighborhood denizens ,millennials ,groups of men ,groups of women couples. The whole kahuna. Dining room emptied out but the bar stayed hoppin’ as we left
We had a lovely dinner in honor of my father's birthday. The food and service were both excellent. And we love the homey ambiance. We will be back.
Love the vibe and ambiance! Everything was great but was challenging to get our servers attention. Great spot!
As usual the service and experience was excellent. One of my favorite "go to's" for a reliably fun and delicious meal!
Neighborhood gem! Will definitely go back. Fun date night out
After 70 years, there is no place like the Golden Bull.
Crazy locals who have been regulars now jockey for position in the wood paneled bar. It is filled with a new group who craves the AMAZING burger, a wonderful chopped salad and a garlicky Caesar.....Stay for dessert and perhaps the best bread pudding in Los Angeles.
Simply one of the best prepared meals I've had in L.A. in a long time.
We used to love this local steakhouse in SM Canyon and had been patrons for over 20 years. We have been meaning to try it for sometime, since it reopened under new management - as The Chop House. We went on a Tuesday night - it was very noisy and much too loud to have a conversation. The service was subpar and the food was served room temp - not hot. It was average quality meat, with half of the prime rib as fat - and completely over priced! We will never go back. What a shame and another loss of quality local restaurants in the Palisades area.
I am hoping that they can pull this kinda fun place together. The drinks are good, the bar is fun. BUT the food is pretty poor. particularly for the price point. The Filet Mignon was tough as heck. The Prime Rib was mostly fat. The Fish actually was pretty good, as were the burgers and shrimp. Frankly we keep trying it, hoping that the food will improve, and it has a bit, but it has a long way to go in the cuisine department. We'll keep going for cocktails, but we'd be hard pressed to dine until the up their game quite a bit.
Hands down my favorite restaurant in LA! The food is outstanding, I mean truly its delicious. The price tag isn't crazy compared to most LA restaurants with this level of food. It's got a really laid back vibe but it's still lovely. Everyone who works there is friendly and attentive. We take friends and family who come in from out of town always, and try to make it ourselves at least every weekend. If you need a good spot, look no further - you've found it!!
Flora provided outstanding service - best service interaction that I’ve had in a long time
Food was very slow in arriving. And it is a little pricey. The Caesar salad was quite $$ for some greens and some cheese.
This place is fantastic, all employees are friendly and warm, the server even remembered what I had the last time I was there as an after dinner drink....impressive, it's been several weeks since I've been there. A+ in my book, I'll be back!
The Golden Bull has become our local favorite. It is consistently a wonderful experience with great food, service and ambience. Too, their wines and drinks are really great. Highly recommend!
Redone menu, younger crowd. Super loud but fun. I am excited to return
LOVE the BULL! And the "LA Afterthought! Thank you Peter.
The food is very good ,especially, the Halibut and crab cakes . We have eaten here many times, however, this Friday night we waited 40 minutes beyond our 7:45 reservation. They were nice, offered us wine, but our group didn’t see food until After 8:30. Not acceptable. Also, We were put in the bar where the noise level was extreme.
We will come back, but only midweek.
Service at table was great, food was amazing, only small complaint was the hostess not greeting us or acknowledging our presence. She was busy on what seemed a personal call and would accommodate our request to sit in the bar area that had a few tables open.
Rather than give us a nice explanation of why she could not accommodate instead have us attitude as if we were lucky to be there as if it were a hip night club
I love the Golden Bull. Cozy locals spot! Great steak!
This is an updated take on a masterpiece steak house.
Lovely booth was provided by an attentive hostess. It was a wonderful eating experience. Peter the manager was really accommodating and the staff was attentive though it appeared that they were a bit short handed that evening. Food was excellent. So happy our neighborhood joint is still there and better than ever.
Great burger, great bourbon, great juju! Love it...A LOT!
Great service and ambiance. Delicious meals. Will return.
The Caesar salad is pretty far from a true Caesar, but not bad. The Halibut was pretty good, but not outstanding. The bar is vibrant and probably the best thing about the place.
lived in SM for almost 20 years and this was first time i went...after hearing many times how great it is for brunch and how much people are enjoying it since it's been updated. loved it.
Server was friendly. Steak was tough and pricey. Bathroom was disgusting. I will not be back.
Fun retro bar.
We had a wonderful early New Year’s Eve dinner with friends. Had a wonderful time.
First time eating there, had a wonderful experience, waitress was lovely, both, one in training. Loved the ambiance.
