the girl & the fig - Sonoma Ratings and Reviews
Wonderful, welcoming ambiance, knowledgeable and sharing staff, quality and fair pricing all of all items which reflects pronounced value. The wine list in particular is filled with excellent choices! In food or wine, it is hard to good wrong. More importantly, the quality of the life that is created at the table is such that you know you have been touched by the loving care of those who grew the food and and made the wine, chose these for the menu, and prepared, presented, and served them! Brava, Bravo!!
Way too noisy, way too packed together. Like dining in an airplane. No complaints about the food. Had the prix fixed menu. Sadly (to me) no great vegan options. I won't go back but I know many others would go because it's "the place" to go. I prefer relaxation over reputation.
Great food and nice waitress. Unfortunately we were seated next to a table of obnoxiously loud people which really ruined our experience. The restaurant had no control over that, but seating is VERY close so it was especially bad. Would love the chance to go in nicer weather and try again, outside perhaps.
Haven’t had a bad meal there—the bar is great, wonderful specialty cocktails, nice wine list, fresh local ingredients, wonderful cheese selection. First time eating on the outside patio. They tent the patio in winter & take it down in the spring/summer/fall for outdoor dining—a wonderful experience.
Our experience was excellent due in large part to having Lea as our server!!
She was professional and attentive - with the best sense of fun and humor!
What a keeper!
Not sure that the 'special request' I made re: my friend's birthday and a candled dessert 'got thru'??
I had to secretly mention in person the request for a dessert with candle
Food was great, service was so so.
Our waiter took a good few minutes to greet us & when he finally did, he simply rattled off the specials and didn’t even give us a chance to order a drink or appetizer.
Additionally, I informed the restaurant ahead of time that we were celebrating a birthday, and it wasn’t acknowledged one bit.
Unfortunately, I may have set too high of expectations.
I will recommend to friends, but the service piece needs to be worked on.
COLD! The seating is in an outdoor patio (with plastic carport covering). The problem is the with a bit of wind, it was absolutely cold on our legs. Most of the people in the restaurant kept their thick coats on (which makes it difficult to eat a nice dinner). They provided blankets...but the table next to us was sat twice and both times the party left without ordering. As for the food....it was talked up to us, but it just didn't deliver. The fig royale (drink) barely tasted like fig. The appetizers were good, but not great. The entrees (fish and steak frites) were also good...but again not great. The one thing that was outstanding was the chocolate dessert! We may return for lunch on a warm day, but we won't be back for dinner.
Ordered the tasting menu. The bacon wrapped brioche (half of the first course) were cold by the time they got to me; the rest of the food came out in a timely fashion and still warm, if not hot. The onion gratin, short ribs, and polenta were all tasty, but very rich. The dessert was a pear cake, which was delicious but the bottom crust was almost impenetrable. It took a lot of time and effort with the table knife to divide that cake into chewable pieces. I suspect the caramel sauce had hardened in the bottom of the cake and that's why it was so difficult to cut. Overall, good food and nice servers but the quality of work seems to fall on a busy night and the food noticeably suffers. It wasn't terrible, but there are plenty of restaurants in this area so I don't think I'll be returning.
My flounder entree, layered over a bed of spinach and mashed potatoes, was superb. And being one of the very restaurants to have both upscale, sophisticated, delicious food AND Pliny the Elder double IPA on tap, makes “The Fig” a go-to destination in Sonoma for foodies and craft beer afficianados. And the gorgeous antique wooden bar, with exceptionally skilled and personable bartenders, plus add in the best hamburger in Sonoma, makes even a solo visit, anchoring one of the barstools, a fun experience.
Love, love, love the girl and the fig. It is my favorite place to go in Sonoma, however, I made the reservation over a month ago and we were seated for dinner in the back plastic enclosed "patio" area without an option for inside dining room seating. It was my birthday dinner and I did not care for the drafty experience. It would have been fine for a nice brunch or lunch, but it did not fill the bill for a special occasion dinner. When I mentioned it to the host, he brushed it off as being "cozy" with the outside heaters. It would have been nice to get the choice for seating considering we had a long standing reservation.
This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Sonoma, which has many great restaurants! We had Sunday brunch on a rainy day and were seated in the outdoor tented patio. My only complaint was that our table was next to a velcro sealed opening and people kept coming and going through that opening which was annoying and disruptive. so it was not my favorite visit. I will definitely go back again but would prefer a better situated table. The food was great as always.
inexperienced server made our evening less enjoyable by mixing up some and forgetting other dishes ordered. unfortunate, given that we always look forward to our meals here. a place like this, can't afford to send out poorly trained staff. if not for many pleasant memories from previous visits, we would not return.
Our server had a frenetic energy that was off-putting and couldn't tell us what wine was being served with each course of our Plats du Jour. The fish was dry and the root vegetables served under it were undercooked. I've heard so much about G&TF and my experience didn't match the hype.
Took my girlfriend here for her birthday, came strongly recommended from our friends living in the area. They were quite busy that night so I’m sure that attributed to our experience, but we did not enjoy our night. The service was very slow and there was a long wait between each course. The exp did a good job of refilling water/clearing plates though. We ordered th pre-fix meal which had the pomegranate/ creamy blue cheese salad which was quite good, the halibut and brioche toast for dessert. The halibut was way over cooked on both our dishes and the root vegetables underneath completely undercooked- we could barely bite thru the carrots. The brioche bread was stale and very burnt and looked like someone had just quickly smeared ricotta cheese and threw seeds on before sending it out the door. This was our first time there and I️ walked out very disappointed. I️ will most likely try one more time as we will be up in the area quite a bit and I️ hope it was just an off night
We decided to try going out for Thanksgiving dinner for the first time. I was very excited about not having to cook and clean up for the holidays. We have eaten at the Girl & that Fig in the past and have always enjoyed a nice dinner. This was an exception the food was very mediocre, the turkey dinner was dry and flavorless and the wine pairing was as mediocre as the food. Very disappointed in the overall experience. We’ll stick to home cooking for holiday dinners from now on.
This was our 3rd Thanksgiving with The Girl and the Fig. You are my favorite place for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions. The food is always amazing no matter the season. The wait and bus staff are top notch, personable and hard working. They are always running cuz this place is often busy. Thank you for another blissful holiday. It was such a privilege and I'm so lucky to be able to enjoy your food.
To be fair it was the Wednesday before thanksgiving, so the place was very busy. The ambiance in the place is disappointing. Food was good, but not as good as anticipated. I had the three course plats du jour. Salad was very nice, Halibut average and the cheese plate a nice way to end the meal and finish our wine.
My Wife and I came up for Sunday Brunch and to do a little Christmas shopping at some local stores. The food was spot on, as usual, as were the Bloody Mary's which are a food group unto themselves. I finally broke down and ordered the steak frites which I've decided is my new go to dish. The steak was cooked to a turn! The place was busy, I was glad to see, with a couple large tables eating heartily. The service, while usually some of the best we've experienced, was just half a beat off. It took a little while for our waitress to come to the table for a drink order and, initially she seemed a little harried (we chalked this up to how busy they were.) once we placed our orders all was great. I think one of the problems with a place that sets a VERY high bar for service is that when there's the slightest hiccup, it really makes it stand out. Would this dissuade us from returning? Absolutely not. We generally eat here once month and will continue to without question. This place is a true gem.
