The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a wonderful location nestling on the water’s edge between the castle and pier in the bustling harbor town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

This magnificent building is steeped in history and was once home to the most noteworthy of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert Holmes who often entertained King Charles II.

Food was ok, nothing special. Lamb was massive and whilst lovely to have a large portion, it tasted more like gammon and was over cooked. Service was slow and you hsd to get people’s attention or you did not get served. Also disappointing that they do not do bottled water. Not what it used to be.

Booked this for my wife’s 50th birthday lunch, expecting something special. I’d requested indoor seating but was placed outside, wedged near a table of lads loudly drinking. No one asked my preference, but the sun was out, so I got on with it. That was just the start of the disappointments. Waiting—waiting for a drink order, waiting for the food order, waiting for the food itself, waiting for a fork, waiting for a spoon, I never got that, waiting for the bill. Two hours of waiting for one meal and two drinks. Staff seemed indifferent, barely engaged, with the manager more interested in socializing with friends at the bar than ensuring decent service. From the moment I walked in, I was shuffled between three different people before even sitting down. Not going to sugarcoat it—I’ll never return. Service was sloppy, the ambience was nonexistent. The one redeeming factor? The food—absolutely delicious. Shame I couldn’t enjoy it, because I’ve never, in my life, sat in the sun with a beer and wanted to leave. But here we are. Great location, great food, but totally not worth it. There are far better places on the Island, better options in Yarmouth too. Save yourself the disappointment

We had lunch at The George with the intention of finding our wedding venue. It did not disappoint and we have booked our wedding for 2026. The food was delicious and staff lovely.
