About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
  • Innovative
In the backstreets of Sandwich sits this little gem of a pub. It oozes charm and character, with its sun trapped picturesque courtyard where you can enjoy a quiet pint choosing from the many different guest ales we have to offer. The pub has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, whilst also being a lively place to dine, with great traditional food being served with a modern twist. The outstanding food is complemented by excellent service from friendly and informative staff.

We arrived in good time for our 1pm lunch booking on Sunday 16th December 2018 only to find the premises completely closed with a notice on the window to say 'closed until further notice and all bookings had been advised'. We had most definitely not been advised. I sent a message to the landlord/owner who very rudely stated 'checked, message left'. No message had been left in any form! Disgusted that we were let down so badly. Even if it does reopen we will not be customers! Very disappointed and had to find somewhere else for lunch but as it is the Festive Season it was not easy and we had a mediocre meal to say the least.

Excellent food and good value. Enjoyed lunch. Pity only one real ale offered and beer offerings could be better. Highly recommended and would visit and have lunch again

Prior to this dinner, we had already had dinner several times at the George and Dragon in the past few years. But this time was different, service was friendly but sloppy, the wine list has disappeared and the menu is not as creative as it used to be. The food was good, but overall a disappointing experience compared to our previous visits. There must have been a change in management there. Hopefully new management will quickly improve.

Absolutely appalling. Mush vegetables, burnt whitebait starter, tough lamb, dried out Yorkshire pudding. The only thing nice was the roast potatoes!

Food was very good and pleasant staff but waited an age for food when there were few people in dining. Very off putting to have waitstaff hanging around the opening into the kitchen constantly, and visibly handling food with their hands. They didn’t seem to have much to do but chat, but then slow bringing bill and then servicing till. Need to be more professional - pleasant not enough.

Good gastric pub quality food, pleasant and helpful staff. Could not fault it for what it was.

on arrival was told "we only have one pie left we have no 10oz steaks only 8oz" We asked for the wine list and was told "if we wanted white they only had Pinot Grigio, Spanish rioja and one other. No sauvignon blanc -they were waiting for a delivery." I ordered Burger advertised with Fries, salad and slaw. When it arrived there was no slaw. I was told that they didn't have any! We waited 30 mins from arrival to getting our food . There was a party of 12 making a fair amount of noise, and 3 other tables of 2. If they couldn't handle this ,it is their problem, they shouldn't make it ours! The only Waitress seemed more interested in talking to the men at the bar than looking after the diners.

Having eat there for over 20 years it is always consistent, good food, reasonably priced with excellent beer, well cared for, and a pleasant atmosphere for anything. Although it has changed hands several times the new custodians somehow recognise what the G&D is all about and maintain it.

Unfortunately we had a really bad experience Tuesday evening. We were on a business meeting meal with external people, who were staying at the Bell hotel, therefore wanted to eat locally. When we arrived bar staff took our drinks order then seated us, it was only when seated we were informed they only had parts of the menu (literally only had half the menu available, didn't even have bread for the soup). Starters were basic but ok, then we waited an hour and half for our mains to which the waitress apologised before they even hit the table as the chicken was extremely overcooked and was barely edible (they said they wouldn't be charging us for the chicken to which the honoured). Unfortunately we used this place a lot for business meals but I fear we won't be returning after this experience. Such a shame!
