My husband and I went to The General Muir for the first time on my birthday because I love bagels and Jewish delis and their Coffee Drink of the Month for October is Pumpkin Spice Latte which is my favorite! When we walked in we were warmly welcomed by their hostess, she was so nice and upbeat, exactly how I want to be greeted at a restaurant! We had a reservation on OpenTable so we were able to be seated right away. Before seating us she thoroughly explained their COVID-19 protocols in place to keep their guests and staff safe which I greatly appreciated, I wish all restaurants were like that! Our server, she was so nice, warmly greeted our table with 2 glasses of water and 2 napkin rolls of silverware within 1 minute of us being seated which is excellent especially by restaurant industry standards, I wish all restaurants were like that! I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte and the Smoked Hash which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and I was going to order a bagel afterwards depending on how full I was. My husband ordered the Bloody Mary and the Poutine and added Pastrami and Two Eggs over easy. Our drinks arrived fairly quickly. My Pumpkin Spice Latte was very good. My husband’s Bloody Mary was very good. Our food arrived very quickly. My Smoked Hash was excellent and every ingredient was cooked perfectly. It had orange peppers instead of red peppers in it which was a nice fall touch and my favorite color is orange so it was like it was made specially for me 😉! My husband’s Poutine was excellent and every ingredient was cooked perfectly. I was so full after I finished my Smoked Hash I did not order a bagel. My husband was so full from his poutine he could only eat half of it. We asked our server for our check and she returned very quickly with it. We didn’t have to tip because a 20% service charge was added to our bill, I wish all restaurants did that! It takes out the math/guesswork and it also weeds out all the bad tippers! We’ll be back again soon!
I was very disappointed when I arrived at the restaurant and was given all of the “rules”. I was told there would be a 20% service charge added to the bill and if the restaurant got busy, we would be asked to leave after an hour. Immediately at the one hour mark, a waiter came to our table of 2 and mumbled something that I assumed to be the 2 minute warning. Shortly after, we were told it was time to leave. I will never patronize this restaurant again.
Had been on my “must try” list for years and finally made it. I must say it was well worth the wait. The food was delicious along with excellent service. From a die hard foodie!
The lightest, most ethereal matzoh ball soup ever! Pastrami reuben was great! Perfect ratio of meat, cheese, sauerkraut. The rye bread was crazy good!
Love the place. But there is a time limit (one hour) as to how long you can stay for brunch because of its popularity. This is understandable but the maitre d’ came by like 30 mins into our brunch just to let us know that the hour is almost up. And she kept looking at our table every 5 mins after that. Makes for a very uncomfortable time there.
Great good and great service!
Need I say more:)
TGM always has the best staff.
Thank you Brandy, Kevin, and all!
its always great here, great food, great service, we go here often.
Enjoyed it all. The food was fantastic. Service was spot on. Love the way you all have this organized during COVID.
Will definitely be back soon.
I had a very great experience recently. This was my first time eating there since COVID.
The restaurant and its staff made our recent visit feel very safe by spacing tables, limiting interactions with other guests (reservation system) and staff (digital menus and color coded table top block to indicate when service is needed).
The food as always was excellent (we both got the roasted turkey and matzoh ball soup). The staff were excellent and were thorough with busing and sanitizing spaces for next guests. Definitely a place I will choose to dine-in again with unlike other places that I still do takeout.
The General Muir has been awesome through all of this!
Always enjoy the General Muir. Love the Maven, get an extra bagel and it’s enough to share for two!
Love Sunday night spaghetti!
Greeted with instructions for the reopening COVID guidelines. We liked the red/green block used for requesting service at the table, as well as the QR menu download. We came specifically for the burger and once again not disappointed!!
They are taking covid precautions seriously and food great as ever
Charging 20% to be told to get out by an hour. The way the hostess delivered the message could be a little better. But one not check the menu before going to assure you know what you want because if the waiter is busy with other tables you will be screwed to actually finish your food. Also, If I put on my reservation that I have a child on a high chair WHY have my family sit in the patio while its the first weekend of chilly weather as I put Standard I did not put patio! Not worth it.
Felt very safe eating out for the first time since the pandemic. I really appreciate all the precautions they’ve taken.
The build out is starting to show its age. Food is good as always, but it isn’t great. Also, they are now charging a 20% surcharge for dining in. They told us upon arrival, but had we known in advance, we would have opted for another breakfast spot.
Great COVID-19 precautions, patio dining, along with good food and service.
The best corned beef and pastrami in town! I highly recommend!
The food was really good and the staff super helpful.
EVERYTHING IS GREAT. THE RACHEL SANDWICH, REUBEN, BAGELS, LATKE, WHATS NOT TO LIKE??
Requiring masks while you sit and wait for food seems obviously pointless considering you can’t wear a mask and drink or eat. Otherwise one of my favorite restaurants.
The restaurant did a good job in complying with the COVID-19 recommendations for screened porch dining. Quality of the food was high as Usual. They did not have the beer that I commonly order there but the substitute recommendation was fine. As a departing gift, we were given a half dozen of bagels. We supposed this was because it was a Sunday evening and they had not sold the bagels that had been made for that day.
The food was excellent, but our server was relatively incompetent at customer service. We ordered an appetizer and our main dishes at the same time. They delivered our appetizer and our main dishes at the same time. When we questioned our server, instead of an apology and a solution or suggestions, we got a litany of excuses about the kitchen staff. That is not a competent or professional way to handle a complaint.
I was impressed by how well General Muir handled social distancing. Customers must keep masks on until all food is ordered. Contact with the server is minimal - you signal for help using a colored wood cube on the table. My table was far away from the next family of diners. I really enjoyed it and felt safe dining here. Having the tip precalculated and included for me is convenient, too.
Great service & food!
What if you had a restaurant that needed to survive Covid--and it existed across the street from the CDC? That's the General Muir and they are on their A game in terms of providing a safe and delicious experience, especially if you sit outside on their patio. Our family enjoyed a terrific brunch there recently, and the food and service were outstanding.
Really good environment, friendly service
Food is always great! The service is always great! They did a great job adapting to the service challenges and it still had the same quality you love from General Muir!
Great place to eat! Excellent place to be from lunch or dinner.
We love the General Muir! Excellent on all fronts.
The food was wonderful and my waitress was kind but the lady at the front was a little rude
Love this place. Glad to see the dining room back open and done with excellence with social distancing guidelines! Great job!
I felt that they took our safety very seriously. I had a great meal.
Very COVID aware. Probably because right across from CDC
The only reason I did not give it all 5's is because we ate on patio and not the same experience as eating inside, but not ready to eat inside at any restaurant. Happy they have a patio, but they could give the patio a little more love. Adding some color, flowers/plants, lights, or other accents to enhance the ambiance and experience.
Great food and service as always...social distancing observed
What a find! No wonder it is so highly rated.
Great food, great plan for social distancing, made a reservation, it was great as usual.
