I grew up in the area. The old General Lafayette Inn was a white tablecloth, wear-a-coat-and-tie establishment whose food did not match the tonsorial requirements. Nice enough, but to eqaul to its pretense.
The General flipped the format; excellent food, treated with respect in the kitchen, and served by friendly and knowledgeable front of the house associates in a relaxed atmosphere.
It was a great experience (the more so because we were celebrating my mother's 93rd birthday), nearly enough to make me think about moving back.
You have a restaurant of which to feel proud.
Food was fresh and and prepared well. Drinks were awesome. Really amazing building that has been renovated. We will return for sure
Been here many times and never disappointed. Just love their Poke bowls. You choose the fish you desire and the type of rice. It's a meal. The salmon BLT is special and people really like the sirloin cob salad. The General has a varied menu with good burgers and cheese steaks to full meals. I lean toward the sushi bar creations. It's open for lunch and dinner. Everyone I've taken there enjoys their meal.
The place is lovely, modern, yet cozy with the big colonial fireplace opposite the sushi bar. There are smaller rooms too. Owner always makes it a warm, welcoming, pleasant experience.
Very bad experience. Restaurant was not crowded, but had a wait for food that was beyond the normal. Asked server- he had no answer. Asked for manager who did comp our drinks. Eventually food did arrive. Onion soup was cold, but all else was satisfactory.
Consistently good food and fun atmosphere!
Great happy hour and small plates!
enjoy the atmosphere and the food never disappoints!
Delicious meal. First time dining there and will be back. Food nicely presented. Emily was fantastic!!
Always good food and good service. Very diverse menu.
I’ve been to the General many times but the last 2 have been awful experiences. Last time the service was poor, this time it was just meh. She did okay bringing things, but no smiles or joy! More so the food at brunch was less than par- got the lox platter and the cucumbers were mushy. The tomatoes had no flavor (out of season I know). The lox were so chewy I couldn’t tear through when I took a bite. General- please better train your waitstaff and check in some food items!
My husband and I truly enjoy eating at the General. The unique combination of sushi and poke bowls along with steak, chicken, and seafood is perfect to suit everyone at the table's tastes! The drinks are huge and the complimentary homemade wonton crisps with sauce are beyond delicious. There's good energy and a buzz throughout and we think the wait staff and front desk staff are top notch. Free valet parking too. I highly recommend this for any day of the week!
It was okay but not great. The waiter was good, and, unfortunately just the messenger. The food by and large was under-seasoned. We had the crabcakes and the chilled seafood . The cocktail sauce had a strange consistency and we had to ask for drawn butter even though it was listed as part of the entree. And, after telling us about a special desert that was being offered, our waiter came back 10 minutes later to tell us that they didn't have it. Not like it was late in the evening. So, not going onto my "go to" list.
We really enjoyed our girl's night out! Special thanks to Bob for "bending" the rules and accepting both our gift certicates!
We had a reservation for two at 8 pm on Friday night, but arrived a little early and were seated at 7:50. Not all tables were filled but it seemed like a popular place. We received our menus and placed a drink order within 10 minutes. It took our server, Zafir, at least 20 minutes after we were seated to come take our food order. Zafir apologized for the long wait. After about another 10 minutes our drinks came out and Zafir again apologized for the long wait. We just figured it was a little busy, even though there were a few empty tables.
We ordered an appetizer and that arrived in a timely manor. There was a long time period after we finished our appetizer and our glasses were empty before our food came out at 8:50. I looked at my watch at this time due to noticing the extended time it took to be served. To us it appeared as though all other tables were being waited on in a timely manor and were receiving good service. Zafir appeared as though he was just moseying around and very lackluster. Zafir checked on how our entrees came out as soon as they were served and we immediately ordered two more drinks, a beer and a glass of wine. This was the first time Zafir checked on us after he initially took our order.
Our entrees, two rolls and a cheese steak, were very good and flavorful. As we were about halfway through eating we realized that we still have not received our drinks. And during this time it seemed as though Zafir was attentive with other tables. My date finished her meal and I had about one more bite left when Zafir came with our drinks. At this time it was 9:07 pm, 17 minutes to get drinks and already done eating our meal. Due to being finished with the meal and not happy with the service we told our waiter we no longer wanted the drinks and requested the check.
We ended up going to the restaurant next door to have another drink. In the end the food was very good, but the service will definitely make me rethink returning.
There were four of there for dinner, we were all very satisfied. Menu was very unique, in a good way!
Enjoyed having lunch at The General. Most likely will be coming back for dinner.
The waiter was polite and timely. We ordered a specialty sushi roll as an app, it was delicious. We also ordered the crab stuffed flounder and steak, our dinner was cooked perfectly. We really like the atmosphere near the bar for a date night.
Was here 2 times this month. Nice atmosphere. However, both times, it was cold inside and both parties I was with complained of this. While the staff was kind, hostesses did their jobs but were not overly friendly, 4 orders were given incorrectly on our second visit. All were corrected when we spoke up. Food is good but a bit on the pricey side for what’s delivered. The duck flatbread appetizer was excellent.
Strong smell of fish upon entering. May need a better exhaust system. The bar area is nice. Meals, scallops and seared tuna, were very good.
First time going there. Had lunch. Ordered the fish tacos. Delicious. Just needed a little more of a sauce. Need to go back to try dinner.
I simply love this restaurant. It’s classy and interesting but laidback. The food is innovative and delicious. The service is friendly and attentive. It’s perfect for any occasion.
My first visit, although I've been to most of the other neighboring establishments. I was a little sceptical about booking after reading some recent reviews about the service, so was very pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness and speed of the service on a fairly busy Friday evening. The menu offered more than ample choices and the food was promptly but not hastily served and perfectly cooked. I had scallops on a bed of risotto, both perfectly cooked, the scallops in particular as good as or better than I've had most places in the city or suburbs. My companion ordered salmon filet medium rare, and it couldn't have been more accurately done. Overall, an excellent dining experience and value for the price. I've added it to my go-to list!
Ask for a quiet table area, but that didn’t happen. Service was slow.
They did not know how to make a mojito and brought my friend a dark beer when he ordered an IPA. Onion soup was too cheesy with big chunks. Prices are high.
Not as good as it used to be. Egg rolls were lousy, spicy tuna rolls were flavorless and don’t bother getting the tuna flatbread - there’s hardly any tuna on it now.
The best food at a restaurant I’ve ever had. Great service, too.
It was delicious. Greet variety. A bit-expensive but we ordered everything from multiple drinks, appetizers to desserts. It was so good. The device was also excellent, quick, and helpful. We will go again.
Went there for brunch and the choices were excellent. Everyone at my table was pleased with their order. I was looking for "comfort food" and ordered the Grilled Cheese with Ham. It was a perfect grilled cheese!
First visit as the General and will go back but time for food to come out was way too long. We waited 15 minutes for edamame and a tuna roll over 20 minutes for ramen and a poke bowl.
Started out with the grilled Caesar. Very good. Then we both had Poke bowls. Fresh and tasty! Great night!
Food was good -- service was really slow. Brought appetizer with meal which we didn't like. Had them hold the meal but then when we wanted it couldn't find anyone to bring it. I think they need to work on service.
LOVE the poke bowl. I cannot resist it. The stuffed flounder was so -so but he Poke bowl is consistently fresh and delicious and a great value!
Food was good but service was disappointing. It was not busy and took forever to get our food. A table that came well after and ordered after us received their food before us.
Food was good, waitress was great, bartenders were rude, slow and full of themselves.
I ate here a year ago and had an amazing meal. I was excited to return to the area and eat here again. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the overpriced sushi. It was beautifully presented but the flavors just weren't there. Very bland. Even the wasabi they served it with was extremely mild and had a hint of wasabi flavor. I don't know how a restaurant with a sushi bar can get wasabi wrong! I hate to say it but supermarket sushi, even supermarket wasabi taste better. I will not be eating here again, especially with so many good restaurants in the area.
Really wanted to like this place because From the Boot is a favorite, but it I can’t. The server xe was good, but the food was bland and the ambiance was odd. I’ll be sticking to From the Boot.
Great food, nice servers, great ambience.
The menu is excellent.
valet parking is available.
Sushi , vegan, paleo, specialty cocktails.
Small and large rooms.
There is something here for everyone. I dine out a lot so for me, quality counts. Want fresh gorgeous sushi? Check! Want lovingly prepared standards? Got them too. Duck flatbread, beet salad were tasty and balanced. Been back a few times, never disappointed. Great bar staff, signature cocktails, and patrons. Go!
What a great surprise! Driving by, I always assumed this would be too fancy for anything but a special occasion, but when our plans called for a last minute reservation need and the General had the time we needed, I looked over the menu and was surprised to find a diverse selection in terms of cuisine and price, but all with the foodie craftsmanship I love when eating out.
The restaurant exceeded expectations— every dish was incredibly tasty and everyone was able to find a meal to satisfy. The cozy environment with multiple rooms kept us able to converse with our dinner companions without the noise from the bar. We will certainly return and with the variety on the menu, we all found other dishes we wanted to try next time.
Great food with a good variety to choose from. Try one of the bowls...you won’t be disappointed!
Great fried chicken and our dinner friends enjoyed the salmon and the scallops.
