The Gate Marylebone
Worst dining experience in London.
They denied all knowledge of my opentable booking, seated us an hour later with no bar area to wait for a drink. Service was extremely slow and inattentive - the waiter told us not to order starters and our bread and olives arrived after 4 reminders. The waiters did not want to serve you - they also told us the pinot grigio was out of stock, replacing it with another, and then supplied the original bottle which was supposedly 'out of stock' when we ordered a second.
They also sold out of the tortilla mains option but did not remember to ask what we wanted to order instead.
A real shame as this has the potential to be a great plant-based restaurant with a tasty menu (Food was fab), but not worth the total farce of an evening. Felt like an episode of fawlty towers. I thought this may be a one off and they were short staffed but a friend told me she had a similar experience there several months ago on her birthday.
Don't waste your time/money.
We waiting for 5mins for someone to come over to seat us. I had a reservation for 16.30 with a special request of champagne and birthday dessert (I know that can’t always be given, but it wasn’t much of a ask, considering I was paying for it) I did no receive this special request nor did the waiter mention it. We waited again to just get a drink and order our food. The only thing that was good was the food. I only eat plant based so it was nice to come to a restaurant that Catering’s for just that, but it was let down by poor customer service.
I met a friend here. The food and service were great.
Ate at The Gate Marylebone with work colleagues and had a delicious meal; great service and good atmosphere. Will definitely return.
Fantastic place to eat as per usual. Staff are friendly, wine is great and food delicious. Went with my friend who is vegan and took longer than their usual 2 minutes to order due to amount of choice!
Very accomdating and would thoroughly reccomend.
Delicious food but service could be more knowledgeable and attentive. I've reserved a table twice with this restaurant via OpenTable, and both times the restaurant has got my booking wrong.
This is a great restaurant. Brilliant atmosphere, good service and really tasty food. That said, not so keen on the vegan desserts! But, each to their own! Starters and mains were both delicious. Would definitely come back!
Service was terrible, we had to wait an hour an a half for our food and when it came out it was cold
A restaurant that cooks vegetarian and vegan food with the creativity and imagination equalling any top rate restaurant. Finally a place where everyone eats well, even if one would normally order meat-based dishes.
We were a party of 4 and shared everything so we could all try multiple dishes. Opinion is unanimous for all 4 of us:
Starters were excellent, could not be faulted. Mains were underwhelming and desserts were not nice.
But the biggest let-down was the service, they just kept forgetting things, brought the wrong beer, had to ask 3 times for water, they forgot one of our starters, asked for the bill, request was acknowledged then heard nothing for 15 mins despite waiters standing around looking for someone to wait one, so had to ask again.
We go to the Angel on all the time, but here, for what you pay, we definitely won't be going back in a hurry.
This restaurant used to serve good vegetarian food. The quality has gone. Service was poor, with no care, plates almost being dropped on the table, cutlery dirty. Very disappointing.
only problem was the booking through open table. when i arrived there was no booking. luckily they had a table available.
Something was very off at the restaurant tonight. The service was sooooo slow, staff running around looking very stressed, confused. First experience here was great, this last time not good!!!!
Definitely one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in a while. My partner and I were excited to try the Gate in Marylebone and went for her birthday on Sunday evening.
I can honestly say that I have never seen such disinterested and unattentive staff in any London restaurant before.
The food was well presented and tasty, but certainly not exceptional and didn’t live up to the hype.
The (main) ground-floor room was very loud and noisy, despite being far from full and the air-conditioning was freezing. I sense-checked with guests at the table next door (who were also freezing) before asking to have it turned down, (a request which was fulfilled the second time I asked).
I had made a note when making my booking that it was my partner's birthday and also mentioned it to the waitress on my arrival, who said she'd put a candle in her desert.
Part of our order (polenta chips) never arrived at all and a negroni we ordered was unpalatable and had to be sent back with instructions on how to make one. Waiters and waitresses never once asked to top up our drinks and we waited and watched for almost 15 minutes after finishing our main course while staff polished cutlery and laid tables instead of attending to our empty plates. (By this point there were very few occupied tables left in the restaurant and certainly no new customers coming in that evening).
As for the desert, we had to remind them that we’d ordered it at all because it was taking so long, and of course, when it arrived there was no candle!
I'm not a vegan. I'm not even vegetarian. My lunch companion is both, so rather than rely on such options at a "normal" restaurant I booked this place.
The risotto I had was delicious. As was the vegan Tiramisu. Non-imposing yet attentive staff. Really nice food. Highly recommended.
Great food, tasted amazing and presented perfectly.
Great food and cocktails in a fun vibe with friendly staff
Other than the slow service everything was lovely. We went for lunch that lasted 2 hours due to slow service. Although, the staff were lovely
Delicious vegetarian and vegan food that even the devoted meat eaters among us loved. Friendly too and although table only reserved for two hours, they never pressured us to leave.
First time I have been to a vegetarian restaurant. My friend is vegetarian hence why I booked it. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed my beetroot burger. Staff were very friendly and a very relaxed, chilled atmosphere.
The food was absolutely delectable and presented in a fun and creative fashion. I would recommend getting the 3-course meal + 1 glass of Prosecco offer whilst it is still available on the TimeOut London website. It is only £24!
It was my first time at The Gate Marylebone though I’ve been to Hammersmith and Islington. I really loved the decor and the atmosphere. The service was speedy and efficient without being rushed . The menu was great as ever though I’d like to have seen more lower carb options.
Yes but only for the food. I will most certainly mention the poor service..
Very nice. Delicious food.
I have been to Islington and Hammersmith many times but this was the first time at Marylebone. Service was ok. Ambience ok .....always felt more welcomed at the other two. This was a bit clinical, considering it was empty.
The food however, was excellent as always
Top notch vegetarian and vegan dishes in a simple, charming space and excellent service.
A good restaurant especially in the vegetarian space. Enjoyed the food, but I do think it was on the expensive side (but that could be my snobbery with regards to veggie food).
Service was disjointed. They couldn't find my booking but squeezed us in. Service was friendly but unfocused. We sat down 10 minutes before the couple next to us and despite being ready to order, their order was taken before ours which irked me. Funnily our food came out before theirs so I shouldn't really complain.
I would go again with vegetarian friends but not sure they did enough for me to make me go back as repeat customer. In saying that - I would recommend a visit for the food alone.
Delightful Vegan food, lovely wine and a very pleasant evening.
Excellent food at very competitive prices. Service also faultless.
Hi Tony, We're glad to hear that you enjoy our food and service :) We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
I had been to The gate in Hammersmith years ago but was really impressed by how tasty the food was at The Gate Marylebone (not a vegetarian). Every dish was full of flavour and excellent. We will visit again.
The service wasn't great. We ordered the chunky chips and it arrived at the same time as our dessert. Also we were put at the small table by the toilets so not the best either.
Hi, Thank you for your review. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your food but we're sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the service that you received. I hope you can join us in the near future so we can redeem ourselves in your opinion.
Good menu. Very good tastes and presentation. Good value and should maintain at it that.
Could introduce a few new dishes so that the regular person has something new to try. Perhaps specials for the week/month.
Marylebone staff are well informed on the food and help in making the right decisions.
Hi, Thank you for your lovely feedback. We change our menus seasonally and we often have special tasting menus, so please keep a look out on our website/social networking for our new menu. We hope you are able to join us in the near future :)
the food at the Gate is just so good. Great spot for a getaway from the office lunch as it's all served in good time and the staff are very attentive.
Hi, Thank you for such wonderful feed back. I hope you are able to join us in the near future.
Exceptionally creative and tasty food. The Aubergine Schnitzel was exceptional.
Food was deliciously fresh, took a while to get to the table but we thought it was because the food was not pre-prepared, including the gorgeous honey and thyme sponge pudding - not a microwave in sight! Flavours were great and portion sizes very generous. We ordered 2 sides between 3 of us and couldn't finish them.
Service was pleasant enough - I tend to mark hard here - it was the note of insincerity that jarred with me.
Will definitely be back to try all the things I wanted to order.
Good vegetarian food. Soup was just okay. Tortilla and pad Thai everyone loved
Had a great anniversary at The Gate Marylebone on Christmas Eve. A fantastic meal with great wine and service to match. A special shout out to our waiter in particular who made our anniversary very memorable.
food was nice when we eventually got it, the food was luke warm and our sides came out half way into eating our mains when they should be brought out together. they forgot to bring our wine out, one waiter did apologise and said 2 glasses were on the house but the wine he served us was disgusting and when we told the manager we didnt want to pay the discretionary 12.5% service charge he asked why but didnt apologise, just shrugged and held his hands open and said ok
Poor. Everything is pre-prepared and was given the wrong menu. Small portions.
really good vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Inventive dishes. Did we miss the meat? Not at all!
