Famous for an evolving menu that blends the traditional with the exotic, The Gamekeeper features a selection of perfectly prepared game plus a range of continental and American entrees.
Acclaimed chef Ken Gordon and wife Wendy are owners who bring tremendous warmth and skill to the table treating you more as friends than guests. You'll experience a meal to remember that includes fine wines, decadent desserts, and a generous serving of personal attention. You'll leave happy and impressed with a desire to return soon!
We had a great time at the Gamekeeper. Food was outstanding. There was five of us and we ate at the bar and had great service from Sarah! We will be back soon!
Excellent food in a casual atmosphere with first rate service. Staff friendly, prompt and informed. We shared charcuterie plate and fried oysters, both excellent. Then entrees included elk, trout and buffalo. All well prepared, sides perhaps even better than the entrees. Nice wine list. We shared bread pudding and a French press to end the evening. Made a reservation for our next visit as we left. The kitchen obviously knows what they are doing and the wait staff included no amateurs.
Wonderful experience as always from walk up steps to each course (best fried oysters I’ve ever had melt perfectly with the sides). Terrific entrees again with the focus on the “game” but never losing sight of the contribution of sides (the pork and its accompaniment were terrific). Will return!
Always the highest quality food, drinks and service. A perfect evening!
Excellent meal, service and experience. We will be back!
I've eaten at the Gamekeeper many times but the last two have been disappointing. Everyone at the table had a different dish and all felt their dish was mediocre, certainly not what one would expect at a fine restaurant. Our server was rarely seen, perhaps working a table on the other side of the restaurant, and whenever we needed anything we had to ask another server to get it. It has been a restaurant of choice for Thanksgiving but now I'm rethinking that.
Enjoyed our first time dining here.
The entire family was more than satisfied by the tasty food. Our server, Morgan was very helpful and courteous. We hope to dine there again, my daughter Raven May even get a job as a hostess there.
We went for our “first date” anniversary. They made it special, like they ALWAYS do! You can’t ask for better service, food, or atmosphere. Thank you for being the best!
Worth the drive into the woods! Husband enjoyed trying emu for first time (I tried it but was happy to have duck breast-excellent, moist & flavorful) do save room for a bread pudding-amazing dessert-plenty to share for 2 (or even three if you just want a taste or so)
Service was very good-attentive & informative. It's in an old building in woods with amazing views, but not fancy, not even cloth tablecloths.
Excellent game, beautiful presentation. Impeccable service and a fine mountain setting. We have already made a repeat reservation.
Fantastic dinner for our anniversary. We will be back!
Watching the sunset from our table on the deck made the meal even more memorable! The staff was amazing and really seemed to love their work. Highly recommend!
The staff, from the front desk to our server, were extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Just another great experience dining at the Gamekeeper.
Everything was great! Service and food wonderful! Strongly recommend!
The Gamekeeper is one of our favorite restaurants in the high country. It is always excellent—cuisine and service!!! We have been here many times and will be back.
Wendy accommodated our special dietary needs and blew it out of the park! This was an amazing experience. It made our birthday girl very happy.
The food was absolutely delicious, the ambiance warm and inviting and the wait staff friendly. Beautiful restaurant....will definitely be back! Many thanks for a memorable evening!!
Best food, best service you’ll find anywhere. And much of the food you’ll only find here. Never disappointed.
Our second visit here, and it was even better than the first. Bison for me, duck breast for Gena. Do not miss out on dessert.
Great as always. Wonderful mountain atmosphere. Excellent service. Always good!!
Great service and delicious food!
The Gamekeeper is a wonderful place for a birthday celebration!
My husband specifically requested the Gamekeeper for his birthday and they definitely didn't disappoint! They had an excellent table prepared with b-day decorations and wishes, sang a special, personal birthday greeting and served up the cake I brought for my husband with candles and smiles. Our server was fabulous and the food and wine were divine! We tried the oysters, trout, elk, bison and were even treated to some fancy jerky; and everything was plate-licking delicious! The prices are a bit high but the food is prepared and served perfectly and you're definitely made to feel special by everyone there. Treat yourself to the Gamekeeper! You'll be glad you did!
We absolutely love the Gamekeeper. Not only is the food exquisite but the service and atmosphere is to die for. This was our third visit to the Gamekeeper, this time to celebrate our engagement. The server was the same gentleman we usually have and he took excellent care of us yet again. The hostesses were wonderful and kind. They continued to check up on us throughout the meal and offered their congratulations. The food was incredible from start to finish as well as the wine selection. We loved our time here and look forward to coming back again.
Gamekeeper was everything we expected. Outstanding food and service and very, very nice quiet, relaxed atmosphere. I look forward to my next meal there.
David was server and gave great advice. Started with escargot and was one of best ever. Entrees of Elk and bison. Perfectly prepared and flavors unbelievable. Ended with Bread Pudding. Superb beginning to end. Highly recommend
Excellent dining experience at a unique restaurant
Food was pretty good; prices were quite high (I had small pasta/veggie dish for $28; my husband had small-ish elk dish for $48). Server was quite attentive when we first got there, but waned towards the end. Gorgeous views, fun bar, nice ambiance. We'd go back for drinks, not dinner.
Unique and excellent food that you will not find anywhere else. Excellent service. The decor inside is a hunting lodge which it was at one time.
The noise level is very loud inside in the main rooms. A real challenge getting in and out of the restaurant for older people. The parking valets were also disorganized.
Food is always excellent and prepared perfectly. The staff is nothing less than the absolute best! We will go back as often as possible!
We went to the Gamekeeper to celebrate our anniversary. The staff were all very attentive to our needs and the food was excellent. Great experience!
Great experience again at the Gamekeeper. Elk and Duck were cooked perfectly.
The Gamekeeper is our favorite restaurant in the High Country, it never disappoints, the food is outstanding, the service is superb, the atmosphere is fun and quirky and the whole dining experience is without parallel.
Great restaurant! Very good place to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. Food was great and staff was very friendly. Emu and Elk was very good and the cobbler was amazing... even the coffee was good! I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Great food!! Tanner did a great job!! Highly recommend. We will be back!
Food service and ambience were excellent
The only drawback to the evening was a large gathering with small loud children
Nothing the restaurant could do about that unless they put them in a distant corne
I don’t understand why people take their young children out for fine dining to the detriment of adult clientel
Always a special experience. The food is perfectly prepared and service is first class. Thank you for another great evening and we look forward to next time.
Everything we got was delicious!
It is always an enjoyable evening at the Gamekeeper.
You start out with a nice windy road up the hill.
Then you enter a very rustic setting with a very pleasant Hostess.
The menu is very different and very delicious. Do not be scared about the different dishes they have
because they have basic choices also. The food is fantastic and you are treated extremely well by a
very professional staff.
One of the top restaurants in the Boone, Banner Elk area.
A friend recommended we try The Gamekeeper. It was wonderful. We were early and they sat us anyway. I sat by a window overlooking a wooded area where a pretty doe was grazing. The cornmeal encrusted trout was amazing. My husband loved the Escargot and the Emu. The bread pudding was outstanding. Our waiter was terrific with the dish recommendations. The entire staff was friendly but not clingy or pestering. A beautiful scene surrounds the restaurant and you feel tucked away at a truly special local gem. Foodies will love it! Great romantic dinner. We will definitely be back!
David gave us very good service and his recommendations were spot on. The fried green tomatoes were delicious (especially w the pesto sauce). The blue salad was very good, the blue cheese was mild and dressing just right. Highly recommend the trout.
