Love this place. Was with a party of 8 and sat at the table by the fireplace. Granted we are all 60 ish, but there was insufficient lighting at that table. We couldn’t read the menus without using the flashlights on our phones and I couldn’t see my food well enough to really enjoy the preparation, though it tasted great as always. We all enjoyed ourselves, but I do think some additional lighting would be beneficial.
I can’t even express how great this place is. The food, service, atmosphere, drinks...top notice.
My wife and I very much enjoyed our special meal at The Gage after seeing "Hamilton" (the CIBC Theater is only 2 blocks away). The restaurant is right on Michigan Avenue directly across from the skating rink in Millenium Park. We were greeted warmly and as old friends, even though we are just older out of towners who had never been there before. The wait staff were all very friendly, and the (I think) manager and kitchen manager stopped frequently to check on us and chat. My food could not have been better: excellent Scotch egg with a thick savory crust and large duck egg; well seared filet with slightly bloody center and nice Bearnaise sauce; and yummy Brussels sprouts sauteed with red bell peppers and raisins. My wife had a citrus salad and seared scallops on a bed of squash and said they were the best scallops she had ever had. She is gluten free, and this was one of several choices they offered. I don't remember the name of it, but the high octane hot chocolate concoction with raspberry whipped cream and chocolate shavings was a great way to finish up on a cold night. Everyone there that night appeared to be having a good time, from parents with children to Black Hawks fans. We spent quite a few dollars, but we felt it had been worth it; and there were plenty of options to have a burger or an appetizer or two and drinks and not stray too far from a Chicagoland budget. We will be back.
The Gage is a four season delight! Great location on S Michigan Ave near the park, museum and just being on Mich... We there for a birthday brunch/pre-theatre. They were aware of tat through the OpenTable reservation system. We didn't get a booth but the table was nice. We were "comped" champagne... the place was very busy but the service was attentive and not at all rushed (we allowed an hour and a half). Everyone had something different...The Scotch Egg, the Wedge... Crab Cake Florentine, Butternut Biscuits & Gravy and Homemade Corned Beef Hash. Each yummy and portions were generous - we each took a "people" box. Because it attracts tourists and locals the refresh the menu and they honor the seasons and holidays (e.g., Easter Brunch is special). Summer time there is outdoor seating. Just love this restaurant!
Sunday brunch was outstanding
My only complaint was despite having a reservation we were sandwiched between 2 tables in a narrow aisle while the place was 75% empty at 10:30am
We had a fantastic dinner at The Gage. Our server Maggie was outstanding! I had the elk rack, wedge salad and brussels sprouts. All were cooking and served to perfection. We will definitely be coming back when our travels take us to Chicago again.
Love this place! Perfect for a celebration or just having a wonderful meal in a comfortable place. The food was delicious, perfectly prepared, and served. You are not rushed but given time to enjoy and appreciate the dining experience. The server was very knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on.
We ate here last night on a whim and I am so glad we did! The food was delicious (I had the special) and the drinks were tasty as well. Our server was very helpful and gave us recommendations- you could tell she was familiar with the menu and knew what she was talking about.
This was a wonderful evening for us! Food was excellent and atmosphere relaxing.Loved our waitress Elizabeth. She was articulate, gracious and efficient.
Could've been so much better. Mussels had grit. Very tasty broth but bowl not appropriate to get it in mussels. Leeks not cooked well. Toasted bread great. Salad upgrade for scallops is $12--for 2 average sized scallops. Service average. Wanted to like it but no reason to return.
Perfect spot for pre-show meal. The food was wonderful and timely. Service attentive. Would definitely recommend.
Loved it there. Food was great, service was exceptional. Had a great time.
Was crowded and noisy when we arrived for a late lunch. But still able to hear each other and crowd quieted around 2PM. Excellent waiter and additional service. Nice downstairs event room. We'll definitely be back!
Food and service were good, but it was LOUD, and so dark I had to use my flashlight on my phone to read the menu.
Went for a pre-theatre birthday dinner. Everything was spot on. Seated immediately, service great, food fantastic. We shared everything, crab/avocado toast starter, pear salad, pork shank. Out in plenty of time for curtain with a complementary dessert wine since we skipped dessert. A little pricey but about par for a special occasion place. My only dis- is our table was right next to the kitchen and service area. All the fun is in the front rooms but our spot was quieter even w/ kitchen noise. We did not ask to move.
Nice atmosphere and great cocktail selection. Went early evening on a Sunday and it was perfect for a conversational dinner.
The gage was great! We went with a group on a work trip and the service was great, fun atmosphere and awesome food! The menu had something for everyone. Would recommend!
We have eaten lunch here in the past and enjoyed the food, and although the quality of our meals this time was fine, the menu was very slim. The fish and chips are always good, but we didn’t feel we had enough options from which to choose. We had invited two couples to join us, and we were disappointed that the menu was so limited.
Dinner at The Gage was awesome. The food was incredible and service was top notch. I had indicated when I made the reservation we were celebrating my daughters birthday. After dinner the waiter presented my daughter with a dessert we could all share and a birthday candle. 5 Stars all the way!
Very accommodating after a few screw up with a very simple order. High quality food and service!
Always great food and service. A favorite place for business lunches.
I had the sea bass special was very tasty but at a high price of $38.00 with a couple Brussels sprouts instead of potatoes . The waiter allowed us to take our time and visit and catch up with friends. Nice spot if you are not on a budget.
We went for an early dinner and only ate on the very light side. The food was good, service was excellent. We like the ambience, but both agreed it was on the loud side, difficult to carry on a quiet conversation. The server was very good and knowledgeable.
Love The Gage, food is great and varied. Something for everyone, you can share, go fancy or have a burger. Vibe is energetic and fun, service is terrific.
Great Experience and the Best Guinness pour in Town
Great place to hang out with friends. The fish and chips are delicious! The servers were on point and attentive. Great before and after the game!
The Gage is always a delightful experience. Food is good and service is outstanding.
Superb food superior service. I dined alone and was not made to feel the lesser for it. I ordered both specials, and they were indeed special. Terrific tortilla soup—a thick, flavorful postage-style soup— and a luscious seabass with perfectly cooked farrow and a velvety cauliflower butter. The waiter was friendly & gave good advice on beer, and most important, he gave me the perfect amount of time & space. The Gage hits the spot once again!
Great service with excellent recommendations - would come back again.
The service was a bit slow but the good food and drinks made up for it!
Our server was phenomenal, never had an empty drink and my date was brought an entire pot of tea which was outstanding. The decor is a mix of rustic and modern with a few different rooms for different occasions which I really enjoyed. There was a noisier bar type room as well as a nice private dining area which was good for a conversation. Overall I really enjoyed the food and the service!
Went for lunch with a group of colleagues while in town for a conference. Everything was absolutely delicious. We started with the mussels, for which the restaurant is famous, and they did not disappoint. Everyone at the table got something different for their main course and everyone came away happy. I had the blackened bass sandwich, which I loved. The server was attentive, but not overly so. I recommended it to all of my friends at the conference.
Service was attentive but not intrusive. The restaurant is loud and tables are very close together (narrow aisles, too), but the food is VERY good. The fries were hot and crispy, the fried pickles were a treat (not greasy), and water was refilled regularly (a huge plus in my eval of any restaurant). I would return.
The food was really not great. It was a disappointment as I have eaten there many times for lunch during the week. My husband had the chicken orzo soup which was filled with chunks of chicken but no orzo at all and completely flavorless. My sons had a pear and endive salad with chicken. The dressing had way to much red wine vinegar, the chicken was all fat very little meat, and there were perhaps three thin slices of pear.
Food was bland.
Great place. Love everything about it.
The heat appeared to be broken for our visit and was blowing frigid air on our booth and the one next to us. We mentioned it to the staff at least 4 times. Each time someone said they were turning it up or having it fixed but nothing changed. We ate with our winter coats on at the table. Disappointing way to spend a special occasion. The food was delicious nonetheless! Service left something to be desired for an expensive dining experience like this.
This is our second year spending New Years at The Gage! We love the atmosphere, food, drinks, and location!
Very nice atmosphere and excellent service, unfortunately the salads were lacking flavor and interest, and the menu was quite limited.
