About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
  • Charming
The French Quarter is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant & wine Bar in a community of unique and quirky businesses in Newcastle city Centre. We are a friendly and approachable team of people, with a passion for the good things in life. Born from nostalgia for a traditional style of commerce and a desire to challenge perceptions that French dining is formal or fussy, we work with independent suppliers to offer a regularly changing wine list & tapas style menu. We have created a casual and sociable environment where customers are invited to experience our food, try our wines, shop from our deli and share our love of all things French!

Great spot. Been several times over the years - everything is amazing though on this occasion the mussels were dire. Disappointing and a very tasteless sauce. Plus it’s not cheap choosing a few things …Everything else was great though and I should add I go with others several times a year and we have veg to meat major options . Staff as always perfect and we like the house wine :)

First impressions are important. An early reservation for 17:45, we arrived early at 17:30 - not a problem. Friendly, attentive and helpful staff guided us through the tapas menu as it was our first time. After a small pilsner each, we both dined: escargot to die for, accompanied by delicious in house baked bread, served with a garlic olive oil dip; Pain à la tomate on sourdough was devine; Cromesquis au maquereau fumé ( smoked mackerel croquettes) and a generous portion of chunky pomme frites; Boeuf bourguignon was melt in the mouth, accompanied by garlicy gratin dauphinois. The wine menu was varied suited to every pocket. We chose a young, yet punchy Aubert & Mathieu red from the south of France. Perfect pairing for our tastes. All in all, a great experience, friendly, lively (for early dining). Certainly we will return. Great tasting food and wine, worth every penny.

A wonderfully warm welcome as always followed by a delicious and very reasonably-priced three-course lunch menu. The French Quarter offers an authentically French style bistro ambience and beautifully-presented food, all served with a huge helping of smiling and efficient service. You really couldn’t ask for more. Thank you once again - and we’ll no doubt you again very soon. Well worth the 50-mile drive.

Wonderful atmosphere, good service and good food. Mostly service was brilliant, we had a lovely server who took our order and explained everything clearly (ginger hair, very personable) although when our mains were cleared, the waitress (different server) put all the dirty cutlery in her hand instead of stacking on the plate and it dripped onto the napkin on my husbands lap and onto the floor (which I don't think she noticed). The food and wine were very easy, we had beef shoulder, mussels, dauphinois and haricots. However, the beef and haricots were quite salty. All in all, a really lovely evening.
