The Fish Market - San Diego
Need to book at 7:00 AM?Other great restaurants with availability.
Potatoes are dry, monk fish was raw in the center, small portions, veggies tasteless, but the drinks were fabulous.
The food was awesome! The staff was very professional. Will be back the next time I am in SD.
The best thing on the menu is the New England clam chowder ñ.
Not what it used to be. Very disappointing
Wonderful Valentines Day experience, they really did a nice job. Sat us a a great ocean view table, the food and service were awesome considering it was Valentines Day. notoriously a terrible idea to go out on that day but this was outstanding.
Food was good but $15 For 2 tacos is pretty San Diegan. Paying for the view I suppose.
Perhaps the 4.2 stars made my expectations too high. A seafood restaurant in San Diego, what could go wrong? Everything, it turns out. We arrived on time for 9:15 reservation, but were told we had to wait in a line because everyone in the line had reservations. After waiting 7 minutes, the hostess began to seat three men who were ahead of us in line, but who clearly lacked reservations. I commented to my friend and the hostess switched gears and decided to seat us first. Poor first impression. The menus are very large, laminated things that are tattered; the dark wood table was sticky with a very old, poorly done stain my friend ordered the fresh salmon. Our drinks arrived; but after 20 minutes, i inquired about our tuna poke appetizer. The waitress said the kitchen was backed up, and that it would be coming soon. The tuna poke wasn't poke. It was raw, unmarinated tuna, with pieces of pink grapefruit and some cream drizzled on top. Bland, flavorless but not terrible, so we began eating it when suddenly our entrees also arrived. My friend's mashed potatoes and vegetables were cold, but the salmon was perfectly cooked. Thus, the sides were put on a plate and sat there until the salmon was plated. The crab legs were cold, dried out & flavorless. i took a few bites and returned it. The owner came to our table & graciously apologized, but too many things were off. Not going back. It's very overrated and very expensive for the quality.
Restaurant full of character
The quality of the food was excellent
The service was too rushed
Hadn’t finished our starter when the main course was brought
Wonderful evening! We arrived before our reservation so we had a drink at the bar and the bartenders were really kind and that was fast service. We started talking to the manager who recommended some dishes we have never had and that was fantastic!! We’ll definitely go back next time we are in San Diego, highly recommended!
Would do it all again. Thank you for Great food, service, view and comfort.
Had a Great server. Food was good. Shrimp ceviche was alright. The baked oysters were very good. Clam chowder decent. As the cioppino was very good. Overall a good tourist place to eat. Would go back again.
Made a reservation on Open Table ahead of time. Good thing we did because this place fills up quickly. The food was excellent. They have a nice wine list. And the service was great. A bit pricey, but worth it. And we asked for and got a window table to watch the sunset. I'd recommend this place for sure. Go early, because parking can be a problem unless you valet your car.
Excellent food but way too noisy to have a conversation
Terrific as always.
Vacation time in San Diego.. next to the water table with Midway and history
We saw other table who arrived after us get their food first. Our food took 50 minutes to arrive.
Old time feel with excellent service and food that is prepared to order. The crab Louie Salad was tasty, and the Mahi Mahi dinner was to die for. Arrive early to get a table with a great view of the Harbor!
Love sitting outside!
Food was good but the drinks were GREAT. Restaurant is noisy.
I was definitely disappointed overall with the meal we hosted for our friends birthday. The restaurant seemed steady but not slammed for a 7:45pm reservation. From the time we ordered our appetizers it literally took just about 40 minutes to receive them which is ridiculous. Besides the apology from the waiter, no manager came by to apologize or check in on us or offer to take an app off the bill due to the long wait...heck even a glass of wine would have sufficed. We ordered a sashimi platter and some lime butter shrimp which was served luke warm to the table neither of which take long to execute. The Manhattan Clam Chowder I normally love here was thick and pasty. It was over reduced having sat in a hot pot all day and needed a cup of water added to it. Still I ate it and know how good this soup could be when it’s fresh and cared for. The rest of my guests received nice sized portions and tasteful plates. I ordered the swordfish which again I love here but got the smallest filet I’ve ever had at the Fish Market! The fishwife rice was also oily and ill portioned. The waiter brought a sparkler for the birthday girl which was kind and I ordered another desert to share. The silk pie came to the table and it look liked a pre molded desert from the frozen section of Ralph’s. Well it was definitely frozen and at this point being underwhelmed with every course I sent it back and it was taken off the bill. For a $250 dinner without tip and so many seafood options in SD, at a local staple I would have expected more from their kitchen. I might come back, but won’t be in a rush or will take friends their again anytime soon.
Didn't honor time of reservation and good and drinks took too long.
They gave us the option to sit outside. It looked sunny so we said yes. The only table left was in the shade. We should have been moved inside when they saw we were shivering. On the plus side, the food was excellent! The waitress had great suggestions, but just didn’t come around and check on us enough. Only sit outside if it’s a pretty warm day. Oh and the coffee isn’t worth it...sadly.
Fresh seafood well prepared with comfortable atmosphere
We waited to get a table for quite awhile, and then the table assigned to us was near two other empty tables. Why did it take so long? The food was mediocre and expensive. The salmon was dry and tasteless. We were disappointed.
This is the more casual of the two restaurants on location at the harbor owned by the same company. The other "top of the market" is upstairs, more upscale and more expensive. The fish market has an extensive menu - virtually any seafood you might want. I would recommend the smoked fish appetizers - smoked on location. The restaurant is fairly casual, there's a great view if you get a window table but otherwise the atmosphere is lacking. The place is usually packed, with people waiting a considerable time, especially to get a window table. This tells you something about its popularity. Overall, a great menu of fresh seafood, usually simply, but well prepared, and reasonably priced.
I am the Director of Advancement at the San Diego Symphony. We are so honored that you are supporting us at your 30th Birthday Party and with your SIPS events.
I am telling everyone have a great evening at the Fish Market.
We were a little disappointed when visiting this time. This is usually one of our “go to” fish restaurants. Our waiter was attentive at first and very friendly and then we couldn’t really find him when we needed him. Maybe he had too many tables. Our shrimp cilantro appetizer was hot, tasty and excellent. My husband’s mixed skewer of fish was not warm at all. My shrimp salad had plenty of shrimp, but was sitting on a large amount of croutons and not much lettuce and wasn’t as tasty and impressive as I’d remembered it.
Great fish and chips! Our service was outstanding.
Major disappointment with the food. We ordered oysters on the half shell to start. They had been pasteurized. As fresh oysters lovers a real disappointment. We all order different fish entrees and all arrived overcooked, dried out bland. By the way entrees online indicated less than $30 were in fact all mid $35 range. As a side dish I ordered the tomatoes red onions and lettuce which was nothing more than cherry tomatoes piled on onion. About the only thing good about the evening were the French fries, cocktails and staff. Overall a big disappointment.
Good service and a nice view, but very average food at above average prices. I would guess that the endless stream of tourists keeps this place going. I’ll be in no rush to return.
The ambience was lovely. We sat outside overlooking the water. The service was excellent. We loved our waiter. The oysters we had as appetizers were excellent. However, my fish was overcooked. I didn’t say anything, but I should have. My husband had the sea base which was a little better.
After we returned to New York, I received a call from the manager. She was very apologetic, accommodating and seemed to really care about the customer. After talking with her, I think it may have just been an off night and if I went back to San Diego I would definitely try the restaurant again. You can’t beat the setting.
Great views. Food was average with above average price.
Food was delicious. Server was very knowledgeable and helpful in choosing the entree. Dessert was "out of this world"!!! Eating on the glass enclosed porch was the best. Thank you for a great experience!!
The food definitely doesn’t worth the price. A 55$ bill for a small portion of food.
I ordered the Alaskan Red King Crab Legs. They took 45 minutes to make it to the table. They were NOT even warm! The shells were soft and spongy. It took another 30 minutes to get the waiter. He offered to warm them up in the steamer. I pointed out again the shells were soft and spongy. After another 30 minutes the brought me hot legs. However, there were half as many as when the plate was served the first time. I would not go back for the crab legs. My wife had the Live Maine Lobster which was served hot and was very good. The lobster shell was crisp and snapped. Shellfish tools were not supplied for either of us. This was not a very busy night. Only half the tables were occupied. Perhaps the locals know the service and quality of the food are very poor.
had to wait 45 minutes for a table beyond our reservation time
The food and the cooks were amazing these service was slow the drinks were not they took a long time to get to us the ambulance was incredible we enjoyed our experience other than the slow service was our last drink didn’t show up until the meal was over
