The Federal Grill Ratings and Reviews
We went for our daughter's 26th birthday celebration. The food was quite good but we believe they left off my husband's steak order because it came out very late and was too rare for most of it to eat. Strike #2 for my husband is he didn't carefully read the bill as gratuity was already on it for our party of 6 and he left another nice tip. Guess that young man had an early Christmas present. Again, that was my husband's own fault!
I go to Federal Grill regularly and am generally pleased. This time I'd say the staff was a bit off. My friend ordered a glass of prosecco that was flat. You could tell that by looking, but when she mentioned it to the waiter he launched into a discussion instead of simply replacing it. He finally brought her another one, and it was good. I ordered spinach instead of the dull "vegetable medley" of green and yellow squash that came with my salmon. I've done this before. It was so salty it was inedible. To their credit they brought me a full side of it that was good. So all in all, it was a nice dinner, but they were a little off their game.
We had a very friendly hostess who said they saw my request and were giving us the best waiter and favorite table which was great customer service. However, it was very loud for a nicer restaurant and the server was very robot-like in his service. He did deliver everything properly and check back with us but not a very warm and welcoming type of server. The menu was very limited if you were looking forward to a nice dinner. There were only a few nicer options then it was burgers, chicken fried steak etc...The food was average, nothing special at all. It wasn't that we had a bad experience there was just nothing special about it.
Federal Grill is now my go to for any occasion. I gave it 5 stars in every category but it is really that good....plus a great value.
Fish is perfectly prepared every time I have ordered the gulf catch. Fried oyster app is perfect.
We visited the federal grill for Sunday brunch. It was very busy. As we had a reservation, we were seated immediately. It was noticeable that the noise level is quite high. They seem to be having trouble getting the food out in a timely fashion. It took a while to get my husbands bloody Mary out. He enjoyed it however. The food took a long time to get out to us. And, when it arrived it was warm at best. It did have good flavor and we did not say anything as we were hungry and just wanted to eat our brunch. We ordered the smoke salmon Benedict. The waiter did apologize for how long it took.
I would give federal Grill another chance. Maybe, at a time when you’re not so busy!
We thoroughly enjoyed Sunday brunch with bottomless mimosas. The Kung Pao Calamari appetizer was a big hit. They also have a wide variety of eggs benedict choices, including crab cakes, short rib and the "Big Country" with short ribs and sausage gravy. The atmosphere and some of the framed quotations in the bathrooms are also fun. Arrive early!
We ended leaving without even ordering. Waited 15-20 minutes and no one even approached our table to see if we wanted a drink or were ready to order. Very disappointed. We had lunch here and had a great time. But even though plenty of staff was available no one seemed interested in waiting on our table.
We wanted to like Federal Grill more than we did. The dishes were uneven--my fish (special) was very overcooked and tough (as were the Brussel sprouts) but my husband's ribs were quite good. The starter of cheeseburger egg rolls was better than it sounded. Seems like, from the menu, that the restaurant has a bit of an identity problem--does it want to be a steak house or a foodie spot? Some of the dishes would have been better with less ingredients. Cocktails had a similar issue--with the old fashioned more complicated than a classic preparation (and additions did not make it more tasty). Easily the best dish we had was the butter cake--light, flavorful and with just enough tartness in the berries to keep it from being cloying. The space is quite pretty and service was fine. With some tweaks this could be a four star spot.
Definitely happy we tried this place out, everything from the staff, the decor, the people, the food, and the drink specials-all good! My friends waffle was a bit dry but that was definitely the only complaint. we had the egg rolls and the calamari for starters and that was such a good choice! The sauce on the calamari was so good, and the eggrolls were amazing. Im not much of an eggroll type of girl and these were so good. We definitely went for the bottomless mimosas, and it was worth it; my friend group always does a mimosa brunch and we are usually drawn to the specials but most times we find that they over juice the mimosas or pre make the batch--not here. very good, very fresh and very quick on the refills! (A++) Croque Madames are a personal favorite and this did not disappoint, so much that I didn't even stop to take a picture I just ate it all up with no stopping, except for mimosas. The veggie omelette for my vegan friend looked good, and the chicken and waffles order looked great but i was told that it was a bit dry, the chicken fried steak and eggs also no complaints, and lastly the egg truffle sandwich; all looked good and devoured before any of us could share with each other, ha!
I ambiance was amazing, the service was incredible, the food was good and flavorful, we had an all around great experience. I have nothing bad to say! If you have s small group of friends or a cute intimate date you should definitely go! This place is cozy, classy, and fun! Please do yourself a favor and get the truffle mac!
The food was good not amazing, my appetizer a tortilla soup was average. My main course a fish of the day was seasoned very well. My dessert a bread pudding was okay, I think the concept of a chocolate chip bread pudding is cool, however it was more like chocolate chunk, which I am not a fan of...as it overwhelms the bread.
I'm a foodie/food critic so please note my comments are high level and expressive.
Location is great. Valet not so great, they couldn't find my keys for approximately 7 minutes.
My overall rating is a 4 out of 5.
Me and 5 others selected Federal Grill for Houston Restaurant Week/ Brunch menu. HRW added to the high demand of F.G. brunch. Although it was extremely busy, management had an amazing team of kitchen and wait staff. We did stop by and complimented management on a wonderful experience. We will be back.
