The Farmers Union is a gastropub located in the heart of downtown San Jose. We boast a 60 tap draft system that features many craft beers, wine on tap, as well as root beer and cider. Our food menu has a large assortment of items with many of them prepared in our wood burning oven, charcoal grill and rotisserie.

Slow start....
We had a 5:15 reservation, host(3 I think) very engaged in their conversations immediately welcomed us and unacknowledged our res. We were seated and waited and waited...you get the point. Our waiter (not introduced) finally came over and was very pleasant and knowlegable. We ordered both courses at once to speed things along. Everything was fine and he checked back at appropriate times and replenished beverages without interruption. First impression was replaced with lasting good impression. Burger temps for 2 of the diners were spot on, the kitchen rocks! BTW-the fries were mostly bits and pieces and dry, they may have been the bottom of the bag according to the experts😁.

Great menu variety, solid spot for a business meeting. It's not a quiet restaurant, but I mentioned our meeting in the reservation request and got a perfect table for conversation. Our group had salad and a couple sandwiches, all were delicious. WOULD GO BACK!

The appetizer was delicious, cheese fondue but the meals were not good at all. My wife had the beef briscuit which was just OK, but almost flavorless. She also had the worst potato salad I have ever eaten in my life. I was raised by a German Mother and Grandmother, this potato salad was supposedly German. It was indescribably horrible looking and tasting. The waitress indicated they have had complaints before but obviously management is not listening. We ate two small potato cubes each, yeck ! Then I had the lamb burger, it was also tasteless, no attempt at spices evidently and instead it was smothered in some sort of pimento-like cheese sauce (so all you taste all cheese, not lamb). It also had a Tzatziki sauce to use I guess in case you didn't kill the lamb flavor enough with the pimento tasting cheese. The beer and fondue were good though. Very disappointing dinners, a bummer meal on what was a real fun day, we won't be back.

They didn't follow my request on the rsvp. I went there to take someone for their birthday and request to have a booth, but didn't receive one. rather we got a small table in the corner. The service was good. Very attentive. The booth would have been nice to cut out of the noise and have a more private conversation.

My beet salad was yummy. This is my 4th time requesting a booth, but still no luck.

Previewed the menu and came for the lamb burger, only to find they were sold out. Not to worry. The menu had plenty of other good options. We went for the mushroom cigars with porcini aioli as a starter. Really unique in texture and flavor. Loved the crunch, the sprinkling of Parmesan and the layered mushroom flavors. For the mains we had the fried chicken and spicy prawn linguini. The fried chicken was delightful; crispy, flaky, juicy! Served with a large portion of mashed potatoes with bacon gravy - creamy and bacon, ‘nough said. The prawn linguini had a bit of a lemon punch on the first bite, but mixed well with the Calabrian chilies each bite after. Overall the service was a little slow pace but we enjoyed our time and we will definitely be back.

Arrived early and had cocktails in the bar. Immediate service and great beer selection. There are reccomended cocktails that are worth trying like the Ricky Bobby and Don't Shoot the Messenger.

We ordered Salt and Pepper Calamari (batter fried), Mushroom Cigars (filo rolled chopped mushrooms), and Duck Confit Spring Rolls (w/pickled veg and a lettuce wrap). Excellent, but we'll skip the calamari as it didn't have a salt or pepper flavor I expected.

The Braised Pork Shoulder came with spicy swiss chard and polenta. Amazing! The Smoked Half Chicken had a sweet bbq sauce and cooked perfectly. Great! The Sausage plate came with one spicy and one mild sausage, sourkraut and potato salad. Tasty. The Pork Chop was flavorful and moist. Worth getting again.

The waitress was busy but stopped to check on us several times. We were greeted by two hostesses who kept track of us while we were in the bar. Noise level was moderate, but booths or upstairs seating is best for a quieter experience (the bar is in the center of the restaurant).

We were celebrating a birthday so one dessert came out with a candle (nice service!). The Apple Struessel was excellent and big enough for two. The berry sorbet came out with two generous scoops enough for two or three.

We'll be back to try more dishes, beer, and cocktails.

Arrived 20 min early, seated immediately - great table for 2 by the front window. Server very efficient, checked back frequently, responded quickly to requests. Ordered crab cakes, risotto, BBQ ribs - delivered within 10 minutes, large portions, amazing flavor. This will be our Go To before any SAP Center events from now on.

I had wanted to have dinner here for quite some time. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed. We had a shrimp appetizer that was very good. We decided to try the BBQ options for dinner, and it went downhill from there. The ribs were dry and very tough. The cornbread was also extremely dry.

As far as the service, it was terrible. Our waitress was not very friendly at all. She was also not very attentive, and as the restaurant got busier, we saw less and less of her. We were also seated upstairs, so not sure of that had something to do with it. We had to ask for EVERYTHING. Drinks were not refilled, boxes not offered for leftovers (even though we did not really want them), etc.

When we got our bill, we were shocked at the price. As we were not too happy with our meal, the value seemed even less once we saw the check.

Needless to say, we will not be returning here.

The food was OK but Michelle our server was amazing. Her timing was great. One thing I did not like about the experience was that the food was served before our drinks - big no-no. I won't leave a review on Yelp but usually this really makes me mad. There is no reason to have to wait so long for drinks. But anyway Michelle is da bomb and I'm asking for her next time for sure. She's a total sweetheart and very good at what she does! She was like 80% of my entire experience. :)

44th Birthday, salad never arrived, meatballs were cold, not even warm, cold. asked to sit at a larger table or near a window, was told no due to a large banquet arriving. minutes later, other guests were being seated at the tables I asked to be seated in. left feeling a little sad but luckily was on my way to a broadway show. Mac n cheese was great. I’d love to go back again, maybe next time will be better.

We got together with friends before a show at the San Jose CPA. The food was good, and the hostess put us in a booth so we could actually hear each other. We did have to flag the wait staff a couple of times since we had a deadline to finish before the show.

As usual, our hostess was awesome (Danae)! She remembers her frequent diners and was gracious and engaged in light conversation. We were seated at the table we requested (excellent!), and were greeted by our bus-server immediately. Our waiter was not known to me, I should have introduced ourselves to him. He was attentive and our food came out in shocking quickness. Wow!

The food was perfect and they remembered dressing on the side. I had forgotten to request this and the server asked if I'd like my salad that way. It is the little things like this that makes a place, a meal, memorable and makes you want to keep coming back. Kudos,

I had brunch there once before and liked it. Dinner was a different matter. The food was really lacking. The potato salad was completely bland and unappealing In appearance. The collard greens were very good. The bbq meats were just ok. I ordered the BBQ combo plate. The four small slices of brisket were very thinly sliced and full of fat so there was a lot of waste. The cornbread was hard and dry. My friend ordered the pork and polenta dish and loved it.
Our server must’ve been very busy, as he rushed in occasionally and took care of our orders, but was not attentive in the least. A server can make a big difference with the dining experience with just a little TLC and warmth.

Maria our waitress was very personable and thought she did a really great job. The food was mediocre at best. We had the lamb burger w/a side of French fries. The burger was ok/ good but the fries were so weird. We wondered if the feta they were sprinkled with caused some of the mischief so we asked Maria and she brought us plain fries which were also horrible.
We also had the Farmers Union salad that had chicken. The salad was competent but the chicken was dry and chalky.

Typically in th past the food has been great. This last visit the service was good, but with a party of 4. Each of our meals were either under cooked or cold.

Didn’t want to deal with trying to send food back as we had a sporting event to attend after dinner.

Hope they improve on the food side.

The food is really terrible. Think modified airplane food. Chorizo poutine fries were nothing like described. Hormel chili on average fries with melted mozarella. Beet salad was gross. Sweet dried cranberries, overly sweet candied walnuts from a can, uninspired lettuce, canned beets. Chimichurri steak was okay but did they have to dump the entire jar of chimichurri sauce on the meat? Fries were gross.

Yuck.

It was an average experience. Front house was great, but our table wasn’t set, we were ignored for service until we flagged down someone not working our section, who did end up serving us and he was great! The food and cocktails we ordered were average, but not bad. It is very tight on space and noisy.

I have been there recently for dinner for two, and business lunch for four. I have no issue with their prices. But I ordered lunch and dinner and both times left hungry. Food is standard fare. They seem to serve up portions intended for 23 year old girls with a small appetite. Good drinks though. Service is handled by college students so not Top Gun service. With so many places out there, I think I will pass on Farmers Union. I wonder if their landlord is squeezing them so they are squeezing the menu to find a profit. Maybe.

Food was consistently solid. Heavy apps and entrees which makes sense for the theme. The flat iron steak my friend ordered looked amazing, the Brussels sprouts apps and the duck spring rolls were perfect. The risotto was dense and thick and definately able to be split or shared as an app. I would have liked the portion smaller and a little lighter. The pineapple salad was very weird, it had maraschino cherries which was gross but the shrimp was cooked and seasoned well. The poutine was very very dry and the melted cheese over the top made it hard to eat because it wasn't a sauce. It was a hard shell of cheese over the fries. I haven't had real Canadian poutine in a very long time but this was not a successful nod to the dish. Flavor was there, texture and ease of eating was not. Our waitress was excellent and attentive. Got the old fashion and boulevardier which were both well crafted and excellent. We got to sit in a booth which was awesome. Overall everything was good to excellent. Beer list is exceptional. Will be back again.
