The Farmers Union Ratings and Reviews
Good food, mediocre service. We had 3 courses and our plates where never cleared when we finished each course. They took my husband’s fork and knife and didn’t replace it until we flagged our waiter down to ask again while his food was getting cold. I have a nut allergy so I’m always cautious when ordering dessert. For dessert, the waiter told me that the apple crisp didn’t have nuts, so I ordered it. What came out was a plate of hot apples and ice cream because they just removed the streusel topping. They were friendly about replacing with a different dessert (devils food cake, which was pretty tasty).
We came for Valentines Day so perhaps the service was bad because they were overwhelmed. However they should have known and accounted for the rush given that most tables had reservations. This place has been open too long for mistakes in service like this to be acceptable.
The service was good, but the food was not. The kitchen put zero effort into presentation of dull and unappetizing entrees. The pork chop was over cooked, dry and mealy, and the ribs were dry and chewy, when they should have fallen off the bone. The collard greens were prepared with too much vinegar and the potato salad tasted like it looked ... gray.
I have been there twice in 2 weeks, I thought after the first time I would give it a second chance as it was also a convenient location. Unfortunately both times the food was very disappointing ; Crab cake Sandwich - dry bread and little filling, fries were only warm and dry perhaps reheated? Second visit - Risotto was barely warm and very bland. Unfortunately both visits were for business and so complaining at the time was not an option, otherwise I would have sent the food back. Beer was good however.
Had a reservation for 12:30 lunch. Arrived a few minutes early, was welcomed and promptly seated. Our server was very attentive and nice. I had the tomato soup and the spinach salad. It was delicious! My friend had a sandwich and fries... Can't remember the sandwich but had habenero peppers in it. Said is was very good too. Loved our lunch and service. It was a bit loud, yet still fine. Will definitely come back.
Overall a very disappointing dining experience. Nice atmosphere spoiled by lackluster cuisine and poor preparation. I had the fish & chips $17, which was a major disappointment (I’ve had better at Mimi’s Cafe for less) and tasted more like chicken fingers; my companion had the beef brisket $23, that would have been better served to my dog. Service was adequate; not outstanding and the noise level makes a pleasant dining experience virtually impossible.
Better as a bar, go to this establishment for the beer and the appetizers, like the calimari, for there is little else to recommend.
My third time at Farmer’s Union. The previous two times were for lunch. I was moderately satisfied on the prior two visits. This time, a client and I shared the barbecue platter. The meet was charred past the point of being edible. The sauce was bland, the beans and coleslaw left much to be desired. Not a good meal.
The chicken salad is acceptable. The flat iron steak is probably the best item on the menu. Avoid the barbecue.
Service was decent. The server was friendly and likeable, however there was a large party so the service was not stellar. The location, downtown town, and atmosphere are okay.
Our server either did not understand English or did not listen or both. I explained I did not eat sugar and asked him to verify the content of the items I selected - I ordered sauerkraut and sausage. The sauerkraut tasted as if it should have been called sugar-kraut. When I explained I could not eat it and asked for a simple green salad with nothing but green veg, he brought me one covered I pomegranate seeds AND charged me $6.00 for it which displeased me since I could not eat it either.
My son ordered ribs that came with slaw which was so incredibly spicy that none of us could eat more than one bite - nothing was mentioned in the menu about the strange and overly seasoned slaw. Calamari was listed - and we ordered - which as “simple salt and pepper seasoned Calamari”. When it arrived it was standard deep fried calamari with a load of other items, some identifiable and some not. We brought this to the attention of our server and he said “ya”.
The food was not good but the service was far worse. I will never return and would advise against going to this restaurant. There are too many good eating options available in the area to waste time with this place.
Open Table reserved us the quiet spot we requested. The booths are enclosed on three sides, setting them off from the noise and bustle a little. Everyone at our table ordered one of the entree salads and loved them. The price was reasonable. I will definitely recommend it to my friends!
Food was uninspiring. We started with the fondue appetizer, which turned out to be a "cheese-like" substance that reminded me of velveeta. My wife then had the pork chop which was reasonably good. I had the fish and chips. The fires arrived cold, which our waiter promptly replaced.
Beer selection was very good. My wife had a flight, carefully recommended by Mike, our waiter. IN fact, Mike was the highlight of the meal. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and worked hard to make sure we had the best evening possible.
The service was excellent. Our waitress was really good! The ambience is great. The beer selection is excellent also. We were disappointed in the food. The dirty French fry recipe has been changed from fresh pcs of garlic and freshly grated Parmesan to something that you’d get from a frozen bag at Safeway. My salad I got ( I think ) it was the Farmers union salad with chicken tomatos, dates, avocado, goat cheese, peanuts and more was excellent and big enough for a main meal. but the other 3 people were disappointed with the pasta, fried chicken and pork chop dishes. Just wasn’t as good as the last time we were there. But again the service was really really good and they do have a great ambiance!
Our group has mixed opinion of the Farmer's Union. The appetizers were very good -- I'd recommend the mushroom cigars and the calamari -- but the dinners were so-so. My salmon was OK, but my mother's risotto was really just soupy rice. The steak was fine, but nothing really exceptional. The beer selection is quite good. If we go back, it will be to have appetizers and beer!
We arrived for our 5PM reservation and was seated promptly. Waitress for very attentive and took care of all of our needs. We has Fish and Chips, Fried Chicken and Daily Special of Rib Eye Steak. Appetizer of IPA Beer and Cheese Fondue was yummy and eaten up. Prices were great!
Will recommend and will be back!
AND they validate parking!!!!! Bonus!!!!
As usual, as a very frequent diner, we were very pleased with Farmers. Danae the hostess was super in getting us a booth. We had a new server for lunch and she was super friendly and perfectly attentive. Fast and efficient service. Corn chowder was awesome.
Attended an event at SAP Center - it is only three short blocks from SAP Center to Farmer's Union. We had a wonderful meal - the food was exceptional. One of our group has numerous diet restrictions, but it was no problem at all - substitutions were very easy. The first issue was that service was a little slow and it was early (4:15pm). Normally, that would be all right, but we needed to be at SAP by 6:00 so it was disconcerting having to flag down the waiter. The second issue was that even though we had a reservation, the table where they sat us was awful.
We've been so excited to try this place since I moved to SJ last year. We always walk by on our way to SAP, so we decided to ring in 2018 here on new year's eve. Honestly, I was not impressed. We recently just got engaged, and on the Open Table reservation, I mentioned that we were coming in to celebrate. I guess they don't read reservations, because nobody mentioned it. Not even the hostess or our waitress. Pretty disappointing so we'll be celebrating somewhere else this week.
The inside is nice, but it is super loud. Fun Edison bulbs adorn the bar, and the restaurant itself is massive. Hostess was kind, and our waitress was okay. Nothing to write home about.
The menu if overpriced. I got the flat iron steak. The beef was cooked to order, but when my dish got to the table everything was lukewarm. The fries were oily and cold... awkward. Fiancé got the fried chicken and it was just ok. My favorite part of the meal was probably my glass of wine. They have a unique wine program that is sustainable and they don't use corks or foils for the wine.
Overall, disappointing. We didn't even order dessert which is a very rare thing for us to do, and unfortunately will not be returning. $61 for a subpar meal for two in downtown, to not celebrate for our special occasion.
Sad, sad service (we were seated way far from the entire rest of the restaurant which wasn't pleasant) and I think we kept getting forgotten. Among the 6 of us we had a ton of different appetizers and entrees and I really can't remember any of it except for the terrible, bland, bread-crumby mac and cheese. I wouldn't go back here.
The food is good, the service is slow. We would of ordered a 3rd round of drinks except the server never came by. When she did arrive she brought the check.
They failed to 50/50 split the check properly, charging both halves to the same card in multiple transactions. After we noticed, no one working seemed able to correct the mistake. Apparently there is only 1 single manager that can correct a credit card mistake and that person is not in the restaurant very often.
