Wanted this to be a much better experience and the fault has to rest with management. They gave the wait staff no chance to succeed for Sunday Brunch prior to the Sharks playoff game on May 19. With a noon start for the game, there should have been more staff. Our waitress was overwhelmed and we also saw her tending bar while waiting on tables. That's not fair to her or to the patrons. There was a general lack of interest by the part of whoever was managing the morning crew, reflected in that we were seated at 10, but did not get our food until after 11. We had to ask repeatedly for more coffee and water and it finally came on the fourth ask. Orders were not 100 percent accurate, though the food was surprisingly decent. But, what they call corned beef hash on the menu was just corned beef shredded and tossed with potatoes. All in all, not a stellar effort on their part.
Food is always excellent and atmosphere is fun.
The food was horrible! We went for breakfast/brunch and all the food we order was not even hot. We told our server that we didn't want cheese on the omelet and when our meal came out there was cheese! It already took a while to get our food and they wanted to remake it but we already waited for so long. We were told fresh coffee was being made and when it came out it was warm. So disappointed! There is a lot of other good places to eat, don't waste your money here!
Food was okay. The best thing out my meal were the sausages. The sauerkraut was good. The pretzel was either 3 days old or over cooked. It was pretty hard. The mustard was very watery, it looked more like a dressing than the usual condiment.
The lamb burger was okay. But the fries had the same problem as the pretzel.
First visit and we are going to make this our family get together place! Love the decor, and the food was an 11 on the yummy scale. Portions are generous... no reason for anyone to leave hungry. Great service!!
They do have a great beer selection. The service is slow, food is very average, and I happened to get sick the night after eating there.
Our go to place whenever we go out to dinner.
Always great food, prompt service. Perfect for work meetings and date nights!
Ok place to eat. Service very slow. Food was just OK not a bad place to go if you ha e time to wait around.
Smoked chicken wings were outstanding. Fried chicken was pretty good and waitress was kind enough to make a substitution on one of the sides. The smoked brisket tasty was very fatty - but I guess that was just that particular animal. Overall food and service were good. Only problem was the noise level was a bit too high.
This is a nicely designed, open air restaurant with high ceilings and vibrant atmosphere. It is a bit on the loud side given the acoustics but we sat in one of the nice 4-top booths which gave a nice balance of privacy while still feeling "in the mix". Service is prompt and fairly attentive; we ordered cocktails which were quite good; brisket was also very good. Overall a nice experience.
I picked this place because the comments and highlights mentioned it was good for business. It wasn’t at all. Really loud and we asked to go upstairs where it was quieter. Our request was declined. Not the best service at this location and not very accommodating to their customers.
The food was amazing. I highly recommend it. We had the biscuit with lobster gravy...omg...
Needed a place to celebrate a special occasion during my lunch break. I was able to make a reservation for 2 on the morning of. We had really attentive service and food & drinks arrived in a timely manner.
This turned out to be a very good downtown place for dinner after the opera. It is obviously also a great place to drink beer because the draft options were extensive! I had a beet salad which was wonderful and large enough to share. My husband had brisket which was tasty and very good, but the fries were just warm, not hot. I like the ambiance. I will go again.
Great recommendations- the best and largest pork chop I have ever devoured. Seasons were exceptional and our waiter really knew their beer selection
Good food and very good service overall. BBQ selection was not very impressive but other entrees are pretty good and pricing is reasonable. Not much crowd on a Sunday evening but can be crowded on weekends.
The service was spotty and not genuine. One of our salads was extremely wilted. The beer was good but the server wasn't very knowledgeable about the selection.
First time here. The appetizers were great, crab cakes and brussel sprouts. We shared a BBQ sampler plate that was okay. Chicken was dry, the brisket was good. A little pricy for what you get. Service was excellent. If we were to come again I would just be for appetizers.
When your business brings you to downtown San Jose, highly recommend the Farmers Union. Always welcoming staff and they have a variety of specials which are perfect for a business lunch. Have eaten here several times over the past couple of years and will return again, and again.
We ordered the cheese fondue which came out as a watery cheese sauce, not even as thick or flavorful as nacho cheese from a can. No flavor at all, no real cheese taste or texture. Very disappointing and calling it "fondue" is a sure way to bring down the wrath of the Swiss upon you. The broccoli was very nicely cooked though, tender, but still green.
My husband ordered the brat plate and while the Cajun brat was spicy, he found the Bratwurst to be flavorless and bland. As a German, he was very disappointed.
I ordered the Fish & Chips, and found the breading on the fish to be very thick (3/8" per side) and again, bland and not seasoned at all. I ended up scraping it off and just eating the fish plain. And it came with a creamy mustard which was eh, ok, but not my favorite thing. I asked for malt vinegar and I was 2 bites away from finishing the fish before it came. The Kennebec fries, however, were very nice.
We definitely won't be coming here again and I'm surprised a restaurant with such expensive, bland, tasteless food has stayed in business. We went here with friends 5 years ago and didn't care for it, but every place deserves a second chance, right? Nope, we still don't care for it.
We went here before a Sharks game and were able to order and enjoy our meal rather quickly in order to make it to the game on time. Good variety of food and drink including many micro brews and top shelf liquor. I had the hanger steak with a delicious chimichuri sauce. My sister and daughter both ordered the pork chop and they were also very good, double cut. We will definitely go here again
Love the ambiance and our waitress was very attentive without being aggressive! If you want privacy a booth is the way to go! Beautiful restaurant!
Had 8 of us for dinner go here. It was way too noisy to have easy conversations. My ribs were excellent (tasty, fell off the bone) and so was the cold slaw and potato salad that I chose with it. However, my friend got the same order and her ribs were dry and you could hardly rip them off the bone. Two people ordered the pork chop and both orders were so tough they sent them back and got the brisket instead. The brisket was better but not great. Our cocktails and beers were good though! Our waitress was really nice and accommodating as well.
Service was great, friendly young woman, kept our glasses filled, good recommendations on two different ciders, prompt. Kitchen was very quick. Fish & chips were perfect.
Great food great service. Will be back
Awesome venue with great service. Good cocktails and great beer and wine list. Service is friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is fun and lively. Only downside is the food is heavy and a bit bland.
We had a great time enjoying the food and the atmosphere.
Always exceptional, great for lunch, try the blackened chicken sandwich!
We ran the San Jose shamrock run, for which the start/finish line was right outside the restaurant, so we preplanned with a brunch reservation. We ended up finishing with the kids races earlier than anticipated, and the staff was very kind in seating us about 45min before our reservation time. The ambiance was great, food was great, and I love the beer menu!!! This was my second time at the restaurant, and can’t wait for an excuse to go back.
We were a few minutes late for our reservation, but our table was ready and the host was very friendly. Our server, Kurt/Kirk? was professional, friendly and attentive. My only criticism was of the cabbage that arrived with my corned beef special was verrrrry overcooked to the point of appearing wilted.
I will say "yes" I would recommend this place, and we will probably give Farmer's Union another chance. However, we did have some issues.
Service was slow, and far between. (Maybe since we were in a booth and not noticeable?) We just didn't feel checked in on often enough. The waitress was courteous enough, just not frequent.
Food: Two out of three of our main dishes were SO spicy we couldn't finish. The restaurant should really label / indicate on the menu if a dish is spicy. Example - the sausage plate had no indication that one of the 2 sausages was a HOT link. So hot my son couldn't eat it. My salmon was so overpoweringly spicy from the pepper salsa (again, not indicated on the menu that it was "spicy" peppers) it was not enjoyable. It was also overcooked and dry around the edges, but I primarily wasn't expecting a salmon dish to be so spicy.
The waitress brought us some bread when we mentioned how spicy things were, but that's it.
We did allow extra time prior to a Sharks game, and good thing we did since service was a bit on the slow side - - again wait staff was courteous enough but we could have used some check-ins more often.
Sharks game with family
It was ok, my salad was over dressed and I had to send it back, my husband ordered ribs and brisket which were cold. They were kind enough to bring him a new hot dish.
Burger and crab cakes were good.
The main course came out before the starters were enjoyed
All good other then that
The food was amazing and i really think that was the only good part of the experience. I was a single dinner that they sat in the corner and did not get a waiter for over 15 min. And then my waiter ignored me for the rest of my meal. It was an awful and depressing experience.
Ordered the fried chicken which you could tell had been pre cooked as it came out in 10 minutes, the skin was not crispy and fell apart from the chicken leaving a crummy mess and the thigh was too pink inside for my taste. The sides were good and the drinks but I wouldn’t come back for a meal.
Love the Farmers Union. The menu is small but they have great food. Their wine and beer lists are extensive and the location is just perfect.
The place had a little hustle & bustle since the shark game had just finished. The waiter and staff were very attentive and pleasant. The food was delicious, we had the meatballs and mushroom cigars for appetizers. The beer list was long with a good selection of different type beverages. For dinner we shared the fried chicken, there was plenty of food to be shared and still feel satisfied.
