Dinner with friends. Fun time, great food.
Always so much fun to come here. I absolutely come for the ambiance. The food is also great. I'll continue to spread the word about this place and continue to dine here- never disappointed. Great wait staff, great food, great atmosphere- wins all around. Location is close to San Pedro, too.
My sister and I had been to Farmers Union about a year ago, and were excited to go back, that is until we went. We were sad with how the quality had gone from awesome to fair and there really weren't many vegetarian options left. That said, having finished our dining experience it made sense as to why the restaurant was as opened as it was.
Good location in downtown San Jose. Occasionally can snag street parking, but normally use the garage on San Pedro.
Food nicely prepared, smoked pork chop tender, with just enough chopped apples, well seasoned. Potatoes Au-gratin tender as well with nice amount of cheese. Small (really a large small) Caesar salad, crisp with plenty of cheese and dressing. Vegetables grilled, nice flavor, but not caramelized.
Service very good. Parking was covered, but you need to show them your parking ticket.
The pork chop was a bit overdone but overall, we liked this place!
We had a salmon dish that was over seasoned and over cooked. The risotto lacked seasoning.
The food and service were very good. I had the spicy shrimp linguini - excellent. Unfortunately, It was quite challenging trying to have a conversation with our guests across the table due to the noise level. All hard surfaces in there.
The food was only okay, it was edible, but not restaurant-worthy. The mac and cheese was decent (but not worth ordering again), and the fried chicken plate would have been reasonably good if it had included any salt at all. There was no salt at the table and clearly none on the food, and because we barely saw our server the entire time we couldn't request salt. Our server was nice, but whether she had too many tables or whatever, we never saw her. We told her we had to leave for a concert in 20 minutes, so could we have the brownie dessert and the check at the same time. 15 minutes later, I tracked her down in another part of the restaurant to say we needed the check and if dessert wasn't ready (it wasn't and it didn't seem like it was even close) we'd have to skip it. We picked the brownie with ice cream because that is always easy, it just requires reheating a brownie and adding a scoop of ice cream...and if it was a problem she could have told us to skip dessert instead of disappearing...not a place we will return to.
Great place near concerts to get a great meal ahead of these.
Fries were cold. Burgers good. Great service!
Number one reason we did not like this place was for the food. It was extremely salty. I ordered the sausage plate with the German pretzel saukraut, and potato salad. I was unable to eat half of it because I could not get past the intense saltiness of the saukruat and potato salad. My fiancé ordered the tomato soup and it had a really bad taste didn’t even taste like tomato plus the extra salt. I ordered a cocktail one of only five on the entire menu and the one that I ordered they were out of a couple of the ingredients so they were unable to make it. This was a Saturday night by the way I would expect it to be their busiest night, I would have thought they would have been fully stocked for the weekend especially since they have a very limited cocktail menu. Our reservations were for 6:30 pm on a Saturday, the place was deserted, I should have taken that as a sign to what was to come of our experience. Our server was definitely not cut out to be a server he lacked any hospitality or customer service. He got his job done to the minimum. There is only two things that I liked about this place, the decor and the beer selection.
Food was good not amazing but good. Service was bad, waitress was unfriendly and very short with us even though we were being very friendly and polite.
Way too loud! But food was good and service friendly.
My sons fried chicken (largest piece of breast) was bone dry and burnt looking. Disappointing. Offered only free dessert.
The food was just ok, I've had better, but it was a fun place to go, with great ambience, a moderately priced, interesting menu, and good, very fast service.
This was my second meal at The Farmers Union. Unfortunately the experience was not as good as the first time. I had the ribs and my companions had the brisket and a Cesar salad. The meats were just OK but the Cesar very good. The house cabernet was nothing special. Partway through the meal our server disappeared and it took us 20 minutes of flagging down other staff members before we could order dessert which was only average.
We will try another of the many interesting restaurants in downtown San Jose next time.
Came here the other night ago after it being suggested by a few people (Toronto and locals). We made a reso on OpenTable and were seated right away in these funny throne seats at a wide table, joking how far apart we were.
While the interior looks really nice in terms of comfy booth set-up, second-floor seating, sidewalk patio.. Gotta say it didn't really live up to expectation in terms of food quality and taste. I ordered the half rack of ribs with the beans and potato salad as the two inclusive sides. The ribs were pretty dry and lacking tenderness, so pretty lack lustre.
Other items ordered that were better (maybe I just made the wrong choice) was the lamb burger, which was a huge generous portion for my boyfriend. The seasoning on the fries were just a bit overpowering. The dungess crab cakes were good as a starter.
Not sure if I'd come back here necessarily, but would venture back here for the lively vibe and the drink selection - they have a ton on tap, including a lot of unique ales/ciders/you name it.
Great meal with a great ambiance and feel! We enjoy The Farmers Union every time we go! Also a great place for Sharks fans!
A surprisingly good place-surprising because I've lived here for years and never tried it. Generous portions, great crowd, quick service. Definitely a place to come back to.
Made a last minute reservation and it was a pleasant surprise. I was with friends and we were looking for a casual dinner and drinks. We found Farmers Union on OpenTable and decided to give it a try. Their bar and beer selections were outstanding. The menu was diverse. I had the grass-fed burger and it was one of the best burgers I had eaten in some time. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable and the environment was relaxed. My next trip to San Jose will include a stop at Farmers Union.
Lively bar and pub in the heart of downtown San Jose. Good food, great drinks, fun atmosphere.
Service was great and atmosphere is fun and lively. My only criticism was with the menu selection. I think adding one or two more vegetarian options would be very beneficial as I ate with someone who had only two choices. Besides that it was great.
Service was good. Noise level was ridiculous. Bench seating w/ flat pillow was annoying and uncomfortable. The food was very uneven. Hits and misses for sure, many of which could be easily fixed. The caesar salad was heavily dressed and the greens were not crisp and chilled. The BBQ chicken was dry, but the meat had a nice, smoked flavor. The salmon was good, but it was served w/ that brown fat layer facing up. Definitely not the pretty side! My husband's apple crisp was nice and hot, but the crisp, though tasty, was very hard. My brownie came in a hot little cast iron dish, but the brownie itself was lukewarm at best. Our server was the best part of the meal, but we came for the food! So, ok food, with a very loud atmosphere and uncomfortable seating. I probably wouldn't go again.
This place is not as good as it used to be. In the past 8-12 Months the price of the
Food has gone up by two to five dollars, yet the quality has deminished. The amount of food one receives is small compared to the price. And most of the
Salads are not as good anymore; the lettuce is not as flavorful, with less toppings and they now charge for every add-on when they never did in the past. The service is still very good everyone is nice but i just don’t want to dine there anymore. To expensive, quality of food has deminished, and the drinks and alcohol are always to expensive; i can buy a bottle of liquor for the price of one cocktail at this place.
It seems like many other places have become this way; so sad!
I used to be a huge fan of Famers Union, however, both the level and service and food quality and portions have slipped in the past 3 months or so. Servers are unattentive - even when the restaurant is not busy - not even bothering to check on drink refills or food quality after your meal has been delivered. Management is never visible, and certainly does not come to tables to check on your dining experience. While some find this annoying, I think it shows a genuine interest in a guest's dining experience.
The service lacked support and engagement. It took her at least 10 minutes to greet us. Just a simpe - hello, I'll be right there would have sufficed. She took a long time to check on our meals after they were served as well as to pull our plates after we were done. I enjoyed my meal (risotto and a salad) however 2 out of the 4 of us did not. The pork ribs and fried chicken were dry.
I loved the atmosphere, but both food quality and service were under par. I would not rush back to this restaurant or recommend to a friend.
Great local sourced food and attentive service. Loads of beers to select. Foodie heaven.
The food was very good, the service was very poor. The noise level was VERY loud.
Our waiter was the best part of the night. Service was quick and very accommodating of our space. The ambiance was second best. We sat in these huge, very old chairs which was very cool. The food was the third best. The mushroom cigars were the most creative yummy things we ordered. Everything else was okay. But the evening was still good and I would be willing to try some new plates.
Great atmosphere, good food and friendly staff!
Food was good and service was too. Meat was a bit dry though and slightly overdone so other than that everything was great.
Food was very good, friendly service but very slow. +9 min before someone took our drink order, group of 6.
Definitely try the bbq
Drinks took 25 minutes, appetizers never showed up, food was mediocre at best and somehow showed up within 10 minutes. Service was a level of terrible that I’ve never experienced before, multiple other tables near by were also complaining. Manager never came by even with all of the issues. I will never come back to this restaurant.
Our server, Meg, was amazing. She was very polite and checked in on us constantly. The food was delicious with a good array of flavorful choices. The cocktails were all very well balanced and creative. Everyone in the party said they want to visit again.
We got the shrimp scampi and we found a metal hook in our meal. Someone could have seriously gotten hurt and thank goodness no one did
We have eaten here before and remembering it being good (not great). We are from Boston so when we stay in town at the Fairmont we have gone there to eat so we tried it again. This time it was terrible. The grilled artichoke had no “meat”. It was like eating a tough leaf with no taste. The goat cheese salad was ok but nothing special. The salmon spring rolls were the WORST. They were so overcook and if your could ring them out, at least a bottle of oil would have come out. The rolls came out super late (the server forgot to put them in and the manager did comp us for them but we would have requested they be removed from the bill as the were so bad). Our wine was the only redeeming items. I would not go here again as it is not cheap (not expensive really) but definitely not worth it.
Had a girls weekend with a friend from the OC. Stayed downtown, went to a concert and found this place while walking 💜 had brunch on Father’s Day 🥂 great place!
Can I steal these chairs???? ❤️❤️❤️ Fit for a Queen 👑
Bringing my husband back!
They forgot my birthday request. I put it in my booking on Open Table. I also called the restaurant the day before and I reminded them it was a birthday. THEY FORGOT.
