I have been there recently for dinner for two, and business lunch for four. I have no issue with their prices. But I ordered lunch and dinner and both times left hungry. Food is standard fare. They seem to serve up portions intended for 23 year old girls with a small appetite. Good drinks though. Service is handled by college students so not Top Gun service. With so many places out there, I think I will pass on Farmers Union. I wonder if their landlord is squeezing them so they are squeezing the menu to find a profit. Maybe.
Food was consistently solid. Heavy apps and entrees which makes sense for the theme. The flat iron steak my friend ordered looked amazing, the Brussels sprouts apps and the duck spring rolls were perfect. The risotto was dense and thick and definately able to be split or shared as an app. I would have liked the portion smaller and a little lighter. The pineapple salad was very weird, it had maraschino cherries which was gross but the shrimp was cooked and seasoned well. The poutine was very very dry and the melted cheese over the top made it hard to eat because it wasn't a sauce. It was a hard shell of cheese over the fries. I haven't had real Canadian poutine in a very long time but this was not a successful nod to the dish. Flavor was there, texture and ease of eating was not. Our waitress was excellent and attentive. Got the old fashion and boulevardier which were both well crafted and excellent. We got to sit in a booth which was awesome. Overall everything was good to excellent. Beer list is exceptional. Will be back again.
We had great service and a delicious dinner. Highly recommend Farmers Union as a great, casual eatery.
Thank you so much. Everything was great and I thank you so much for the booth. I met a friend I hadn’t seen in years and that was the perfect spot to be able to catch up.
Nothing especially special, but tasty, reasonable and the right location for after a sharks game. Pleasant competent staff dealing with a big crowd.
Great downtown location with great food options. I made early morning reservations but the reservations were not needed. Play song opens at 10 a.m., but staff is still arriving and getting ready for the day.
We dined with a group of seven on a Saturday evening. Made reservations, seated immediately upon arrival. Kelly was our server and she was fantastic. We can be a rather loud crew. She handled us with deft aplomb! And did it all with a smile and excellent service. We had one hitch, my entree went to the wrong table and they had to remake my dinner. Kelly graciously brought us dessert at no charge to compensate. We were happy and had a great evening! I would strongly recommend Farmers Union to any and all!
We had a good pre-Sharks game dinner here - beer and appetizers - everything was tasty. I recommend the garlic shrimp and chorizo poutine. Bill seemed high for just appetizers and beer, but no individual item seemed over priced, so I guess that's just the cost of drinks and snacks these days. I would make a reservation for pre-Sharks game - it gets quite busy. I would definitely go back again.
Had a good time . Everyone enjoyed it.
Service was very nice.
Good food, mediocre service. We had 3 courses and our plates where never cleared when we finished each course. They took my husband’s fork and knife and didn’t replace it until we flagged our waiter down to ask again while his food was getting cold. I have a nut allergy so I’m always cautious when ordering dessert. For dessert, the waiter told me that the apple crisp didn’t have nuts, so I ordered it. What came out was a plate of hot apples and ice cream because they just removed the streusel topping. They were friendly about replacing with a different dessert (devils food cake, which was pretty tasty).
We came for Valentines Day so perhaps the service was bad because they were overwhelmed. However they should have known and accounted for the rush given that most tables had reservations. This place has been open too long for mistakes in service like this to be acceptable.
The service was good, but the food was not. The kitchen put zero effort into presentation of dull and unappetizing entrees. The pork chop was over cooked, dry and mealy, and the ribs were dry and chewy, when they should have fallen off the bone. The collard greens were prepared with too much vinegar and the potato salad tasted like it looked ... gray.
I have been there twice in 2 weeks, I thought after the first time I would give it a second chance as it was also a convenient location. Unfortunately both times the food was very disappointing ; Crab cake Sandwich - dry bread and little filling, fries were only warm and dry perhaps reheated? Second visit - Risotto was barely warm and very bland. Unfortunately both visits were for business and so complaining at the time was not an option, otherwise I would have sent the food back. Beer was good however.
The service was the best part, but the food was still pretty tasty. Excellent beer selection and our waitress was very knowledgeable. Great place for a casual hang out.
A group of us met up for brunch. Everyone enjoyed their food and our server Tor was great. bartender was ON POINT and everyone LOVED their drinks. We will be coming back!
A good place to eat and drink before an event in San Jose.
Wife B Day.. went great!
I order fish n chips and the fish was so heavily batter and not good at all. Calamari was over cooked.
Had a reservation for 12:30 lunch. Arrived a few minutes early, was welcomed and promptly seated. Our server was very attentive and nice. I had the tomato soup and the spinach salad. It was delicious! My friend had a sandwich and fries... Can't remember the sandwich but had habenero peppers in it. Said is was very good too. Loved our lunch and service. It was a bit loud, yet still fine. Will definitely come back.
Great place to take my wife for her birthday. Food was very good and service was great too.
Overall a very disappointing dining experience. Nice atmosphere spoiled by lackluster cuisine and poor preparation. I had the fish & chips $17, which was a major disappointment (I’ve had better at Mimi’s Cafe for less) and tasted more like chicken fingers; my companion had the beef brisket $23, that would have been better served to my dog. Service was adequate; not outstanding and the noise level makes a pleasant dining experience virtually impossible.
Better as a bar, go to this establishment for the beer and the appetizers, like the calimari, for there is little else to recommend.
