The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.
The children's menu is only available at lunch for ages 10 and under.
Tasting menu only available in the evening unless requested via phone in advance.

A red wine blended from the batches the winery can produce every year. Polished black fruit evident tannins yet supple with a complex palate and a well-integrated modern finish. Evocative on the nose showing blackcurrants, red cherries, cedar wood and cigar box aromas living up to its mystical legacy of the gentle giants that once roamed the mountains of the winelands

Excellent food and service - staff very friendly lovely feel to the restaurant
Lovely atmosphere great service and great food. The staff are very friendly and informative
Absolute Perfection on every aspect. There’s nothing more you need to know. This restaurant is a must visit
Food and service was excellent. Would highly recommend. Chocolate cherry dessert was exceptional
A beautiful but simple space in which to relax and enjoy high quality cooking and discreet service. Terrific value lunch menu and a good choice of affordable quality wines. Will definitely return.
Faultless, the food was obviously amazing and the staff were all great, really friendly, not over priced, just perfect. We’ll definitely be back.
We had a great meal from the A La Carte menu and the tasting menu also looked very tempting. The decor and layout was excellent and the staff knowledgeable and engaging. Recommended!
Three course late lunch was the best meal we had during our week in Torquay. Flavours were varied and distinct, my only slight disappointment was that the sliced scallops in the starter were chilled, I was expecting them freshly pan-fried.
After an initial 15 minute wait to order aperitifs the service was perfect, and the atmosphere was elegant but casual.
Overall very good value for a special meal.
Simply the best place to eat in the area! Represents excellent value for your money.
Absolutely fantastic! Could not fault a thing. The food was excellent, the service was great. I will continue to visit the elephant at every opportunity!
Truly an amazing place to eat
Fabulous evening had the taster menu and wine paring
We had a wonderful meal from a varied and delicious menu with gluten free options.
Note this restaurant provided proper gluten free choices not just removing sauces as some restaurants are prone to do.
We would definitely eat here again (and again).
Great food, but a little over priced. So not great value for the money you asked to pay.
I've been to the elephant before and it's a restaurant with a nice atmosphere and excellent service. We had a young waitress and she was excellent attentive knowledgable and friendly. Food was very good starters particularly the crab went down well. I had the scallop with the chicken which I really enjoyed. Scallop was perhaps slightly overcooked but that didnt spoil the overall taste Mash
and the dauphinoise potatoes were excellent I found my fillet a little tough to be honest which is reflected in the 4 out of five. Desserts, the chocolate and cherry and the lemon meringue were good. Although I felt the apple pie really underwhelming as did one other of the party. Hopefully this doesnt song negative ss it's meant to be constructive.overall we enjoyed the evening but I felt it wasnt quite as good as before.
We had a excellent meal at The Elephant Restaurant, tasty food and friendly staff.
We went as a group of three for lunch on my partners birthday. We all really enjoyed the set lunch which was outstandingly good value, as was the wine. The service is informal and high quality. Overall a relaxed pleasent lunch.
A lovely room, excellent staff and service, and all dishes beautifully presented and well cooked; some portions a little on the small size- but others generous
The restaurant is lovely and the food superb
We found it to be a bit more casual than other Michelin starred restaurants we have eaten in and the service reflected this too, the service could be described as slow
Fantastic food, great service. The tasting menu really showcases the skills of Simon and his team. The matching wine flight is great value and the wines chosen definitely compliment the food. Definite must do when in Torquay
I had booked a table for my husband's belated 70th birthday meal. The service was very slow, the table was booked for 7 pm but our main course didn't arrive until 8.20. My husband has arthritis in his leg and finds sitting for long periods very uncomfortable. The starters was nice but nothing outstanding. we then waited at least 30 minutes for our main course. The restaurant was busy but the time waited
was unacceptable. My main course of plaice was not anything better than any other fish restaurant. It was also served with a mustard type dressing which I found a little odd. My husband had a main course of lamb which was quite fatty and also had a mayonnaise type dressing. we are local but I dont think for the price of the entire meal, over £100, that we will be going again.
The Elephant has always given a high standard of cuisine and service. Thankfully that has not changed post COVID. Looking forward to my next visit.
Lovely food and surprised by size of portions. Thought value was excellent
Wonderful lunch! Couldn’t recommend enough lovely service.
We are not experts in Michelin star food but have experienced meal of that standard in Bristol (where we live) & London. We enjoy very good food but do not want the 'fussiness' that goes with it at some locations.
At Elephant the food was excellent, the atmosphere welcoming & the service immaculate.
Good value lunch menu. Service felt rushed and like they wanted to get us out as quickly as possible. Food was mainly nice but one dish was disappointing. Have eaten in non Michelin star restaurants that were better than this meal. Overall a bit disappointed as had high expectations.
Best meal ever. Outstanding experience
Delicious lunch, the four of us all had different starters and main courses, couldn’t fault any of them. Great service, would highly recommend going here, we will be back soon.
Sensible menu with just two fish, two meat & one v dish for main course. Excellent wine list. Price matches the high standard of the chef.
Our first visit, lovely table in the window, attentive staff and excellent food. We will be back!
Great to be back, and see so many familiar faces. We’d forgotten how different the food is, so thrilled overall
My husband and I had a delightful lunch at the Elephant .We had the three course set lunch .
Scallops to start with lovely flavours of ginger and lemon grass .The homemade sourdough bread was excellent .
The main course was roasted Hake with brown crab risotto simply delicious we had some dauphinoise potatoes as an extra ...which although unnecessary !!! were also delicious .
Dessert coffee choux with coffee icecream .
Very enjoyable lunch , nice ambience most relaxing .
Good way to end lockdown have a special treat at the Elephant !
A delightful lunch in a relaxed atmosphere served by competent, friendly staff.
Food was amazing, service excellent, friendly helpful staff
Would definitely return
Meal lived up to expectations and reviews I had read. Strong flavours, couldn’t fault. Well worth booking when you are in Torquay
We had been recommended The Elephant and when we planned a visit to Torquay we booked well in advance. It was worth the wait! Although the menu is quite small the food was excllent. Brixham Crab to start followed by the Beef was a good combination.
Would recommend if you can get a booking
We chose the Elephant for our 25th wedding anniversary as we were staying nearby and wanted something extraordinary. It certainly was a beautiful place with an unusual menu which we expected. The food was beautifully presented, like paintings on a plate. Not all the dishes were as tasty as they looked. The plaice was beautiful to look at but the English mustard overpowered all the other flavours. The service was good except my wine order was lost and eventually arrived with no apology. We expected it to be expensive but it was a bit more expensive then we were expecting. So value for money was a bit disappointed. But it was a great experience.
We had an amazing dinner, the food was outstanding, highly recommend and we will be back👌👌 thank you
We had crab and scallop starters and lamb and beef main courses. They were all excellent.
Very lovely experience. Location, ambiance, service, food very good. Felt a bit rushed but apart from that excellent
The food was excellent and the service outstanding. Even the children’s lunch was amazing. Will definitely be returning.
