   We loved the character of the place. For example the display of old carpenters’ tools. Staff are friendly. We would definitely return here to try more dishes. The vegetable spring rolls were delicious and proved to be an excellent nibble prior to the sharing plate of surf and turf. The sharing plate was more than enough for the both of us. We finished with a lemon posset and a mango/coconut sundae both of which made a good finish to the meal.

   We were a party of 4 and chose the set menu, as we had not visited before. The service was ok, although it didn't seem wholly genuine, and the food was distinctly average, when we were expecting better.

   We have been to The Durham Ox on several occasions for lunch and it has always been consistently excellent. It is wise to book to avoid disappointment.

   Although the building is really nice, the outside tables charming, overall a disappointing experience. We had a very simple lunch, buddha bowls which were fine, though the waiter was dumbfounded when we asked for dressing ('I'll see what I can do' as if it were a huge ask to want for dressing with a salad).). The chips were greasy and tasted stale. Delicious and expensive wine...however we were overcharged and when I rung up to query the bill (I was treating a friend so didn't want a fuss in front of her)...the person I spoke to said "Oh yes, we charged for a magnum not a bottle of the wine". I was refunded the difference but still the service charge was nearly £16 for bad service....not good enough. Not nearly apologetic enough sort of 'sorry about that' attitude. I have been there many times, even had significant birthday celebrations but it really has gone downhill. I do not recommend.

   Interesting lunch menu options, from 2 or 3 course specials to a full a la carte menu. There is also a selection of sandwiches if you are less hungry.

   Such a wonderful restaurant, fabulous food and staff very friendly with great service - group of 4 for Sunday lunch.

    This was our first time at the Durham Ox, I have only heard great things about the place so thought I would try it for myself. Well, it was outstanding. The service was great, the food was absolutely beautiful and the place itself is so lovely. I wasn't sure whether to go for the smoked salmon crumpet or the beer battered black pudding, I ended up going with the salmon, however the waitress came up to me and said I'd heard your conversation so here's some black pudding for you to try as well. Well, I was blown away by that, what incredible service and an incredible wow moment. Thanks Durham Ox I will be back again really soon.
