The Durham Ox is a family owned traditional village Inn offering friendly and efficient service; showcasing the best of local produce in our menu, as well as stocking an extensive range of wines and cask ales. An award winning traditional pub complete with flag stone floors, exposed beams, oak panelling and roaring fires in winter.
(We have dog friendly tables, but these are limited so please do call us to secure one if your dog is dining with us.)
As well as our extensive restaurant areas, The Durham Ox has several spaces for Private Dining to celebrate any occasion and can seat between 10-85 guests for a formal or informal dinner. For those wishing for over-night accommodation there are five converted farm cottages that provide a peaceful and charming place to stay, the converted Studio Suite located above the pub and a self catered cottage in the village, Ivy Cottage that sleeps up to 6 people.

Very noisy in the dining room due to bbq function going outside v loud music and large number of people - also smoke from outdoor bbq was blowing into the dining area. Service fairly average but presume staff were preoccupied with the function. Would probably avoid again on a Saturday night if functions are a regular thing.

Great menu, varied but not too wide, which ensures they keep the high quality consistent. Started with a pea and goat cheese fritter which was fantastic. It was on a bed of hummus, which was divine. Slightly spicy but with lemon coming through the flavour. For mains, we went for a hot dog and a fish butty. This sounds basic but, picture the best ever hot dog sausage in a brioche bun with crispy onions. This was, hands down, the best ever hot dog I've had. The fish butty was fabulous, served in a ciabatta. Been to the Durham Ox twice now and both times it blew me away with the quality of the food. Service was perfect. Friendly, attentive but not overbearing. The pub is lovely. I'm a real ale freak so the Black sheep is one of two cask ales they do. Can't remember what the other one was, a blonde or something. The black sheep is kept well and was very tasty. It would be nice if there were a darker ale on, like a porter or decent stout (not Guinness of course). There are a number of those awful keg beers on the bar which for some ridiculous reason people seem to drink. My only gripe is the price of the wine which seemed high.

A fatty steak, hard chips and no one came to ask if everything was ok, certainly not what we’re used to at The Durham Ox in Crayke. Disappointing 🙁

This was a disappointing experience at a pub we have visited - and enjoyed - for many years. We were celebrating an 80th birthday and I rang ahead to advise the Durham Ox of this and to ask for a quiet table (our friend has hearing difficulties). Our table was next to the kitchen, so we suffered persistent banging throughout the evening as staff went to and fro with meals. It was a nightmare. I mentioned this, and the barman confirmed that my request had been received - but not acted on. He said that if we returned he would try to do something. I doubt we will return. Food was adequate.

We booked for early evening thinking we were going to get a Sunday Roast but they only serve this at lunchtime - lesson learned. Nonetheless we ordered from the A La Carte and Specials Board and were not disappointed, we had pork from the specials board and chicken from the main menu, both came with kale, dauphinoise potatoes, the most delicious sticky roasted carrots and a divine jus; we cleared our plates. It's worth noting that the view from the car park at the back of the pub is stunning.

Excellent food in a pub that has gone from strength to strength over the years, adding lovely rooms, a pub within a pub, outdoor seating and a function room. Had dinner with my husband and children in the bustling dining room, which is lovely but I personally prefer eating in the bar. We had delicious oysters to start then the excellent generous starter portions of scallops au gratin. The seafood platter at £39 is incredible value and would easily serve two people as a main. Excellent fish and chips, perfect steak and interesting seafood curry. The service is particularly good, so charming and efficient that we added to the included service charge. Great wine and beer selection. Highly recommend.
