Great food, great service, nice dark ambiance with elevated decor and great drink menu. We were only in Newport for two days, and we’re really glad we were able to enjoy one night at the Dining Room at the Vanderbilt

We sat at the bar prior to being seated at our table. We enjoyed good service and quality cocktails from the bar staff. As it turns out, we should have stayed at the bar to dine! The Maître d'hôtel seemed in a terrible hurry to seat us, even though our reservation was at 8 and there were plenty of unoccupied tables. Also, she was not at all well presented for such an establishment. Anyway... The service was slow and insouciant. Again, far from befitting such a restaurant. I ordered a specific (and not inexpensive) bottle of red Bordeaux. The waiter was not clear on which one, so I pointed it out on the menu. He came back 10 minutes later, with the wine list and pointed to one of the wines on the list and asked to confirm. What he pointed to was an Italian white! Another 10 minutes passed, and he arrived with the wine - right wine, wrong year! Anyway... He asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. I said sparkling. He said, "is Saratoga ok?" I said it was and we discussed Saratoga Springs. He came back and poured us both two glasses of tap water. I reminded him of our conversation and then it dawned on him that yes, we had a conversation about the Springs. Anyway... From then on, the service can best be described as flippant which is OK if you're in an Olive Garden, but far from OK when one is paying hundreds of dollars for a meal at what purports to be "the #1 Hotel in the Northeast, Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards". The food was average. When asked if we wanted desert, the offering were few and uninteresting - and the idea of an after-dinner drink was unappealing after such an experience. We paid and left. Highly unsatisfactory. Protect your wallet and you'd be wise to take it elsewhere.

Excellent service - scallop app was outstanding- clam chowder would have liked some more clams-we also had the haddock which was very well portioned with the clams, perfect cooking- duck was beautifully done, would pass in the parsnips - lack of seasonings- toffee cake delish and great sorbet.

Only knocked it one star because the menu was very small for lunch (I did find something I wanted) and otherwise the experience was excellent.

We had a wonderful experience, ambiance was amazing, staff great and food wonderful. The drinks were just OK but overall we really enjoyed our dinner. It was our 39th anniversary and we had a full meal including dessert.

Pros are great venue and fantastic service. But, these pros are seriously outweighed by the limited menu selection, very expensive prices (and we are from NYC and saying this) , and mediocre tasting food with small portions. We actually left the restaurant feeling angry on how much we had to pay for what we received. We will stick to just cocktails if we go back. (again, we are NYC people who are OK with paying higher prices if the quality is there)
