About The Derby

The Derby is more than a restaurant. Established in 1922, it has been family owned and operated since 1951. It is a grand museum showcasing some of horse racing's greatest moments. Diners are invited to take a break from the rush of modern life and travel back to the time of George Woolf, Seabiscuit and relive the excitement of The Race of the Century. We excel in offering the best grades of meat and extremely fresh seafood prepared by our longtime executive chef that would delight even the most discriminating of taste. Some of the menu highlights include the Bacon Wrap Filet, Delmonico New York, Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. We offer a wide selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass. Relax and enjoy a fine cognac or single malt scotch on our patio, or take in a sporting event on one of our three new plasma screen television sets. Dining at The Derby can only be compared to the feeling of holding the winning ticket when you smile and know that you made the right bet.

We have been to the Derby many times and after this past visit we question if we will return. We were seated in the filled to capacity main dining room. Everything was fine until a party of nine (9) was seated nearby. They were obnoxiously loud, standing up at the table, singing and dancing. Each one talking louder than the other to be heard. We commented to the waitress about the noise, who agreed and stated they should have been seated on the patio. The manager came over and we told her about our issue with the table. She did let them know they were getting noise complaints. They did quiet down for about ten minutes, then as more drinks were served the noise level continued to rise. This was obviously a table of regulars and management decided catering to them was more important than providing an enjoyable dining experience for everybody else around them.

Great customer service. The staff was friendly and attentive. Open table glitches and didn't confirm our time change. They were accommodating. We were able to get a spot relatively quick.

Came here for DineLA. Ordered filet mignon with scallops but got prime rib with shrimp instead. Was told it would take another 20 minutes to get correct order but since I was hungry, I decided to keep what they served me. Ordered the mousse for dessert but got cheesecake instead. Second time time they got the order wrong!Server was not attentive and did not inform us of specials or even offer us a drink menu. When I asked for a drink menu, she seemed offended even though I ordered a drink and she forgot to bring it to me.

First time here and well worth the drive. Took some of my best clients out to lunch and it did not disappoint! The food was exceptional and service was great. There were so many things on the menu I wanted to try but went with the steak salad with delicious filet mignon. It was great and a good value for this type of restaurant. I loved the dark atmosphere and deep red booths. Can't wait to return.

My wife and I had never been to
the Derby and we had heard about
the great food. We were not disappointed.
The Fillet Mignon was magnificent and
the Halibut was so tender and flavorful
also. We will definitely be back.

We loved our visit....
The service and food were very good! The decor is reminiscent of an old steakhouse....dark wood and homey feeling. Our server was very knowledgeable and witty also! Drinks were good...nice wine list too! Salads and soups were very tasty. Our entrees were delicious. The special was Beef Wellington....AWESOME! Then, my favorite part .....dessert! We got a sampler...adequate for 4 of us! All in all, a great evening! I would recommend it !

We had a nice food server and the food was good but it was way too noisy. Our party of 6 were seated in a corner booth and we could barely hear each other. I passed one of the other dining rooms and it seemed much quieter. Very unfortunate as it was an expensive dinner but instead of being a nice event it was stressful and we were all ready to leave.

I have been a customer at/of The Derby since the late 70"s. I used to attend more often but recently I have not entertained as much. I used to know everyone there and was known and recognized in kind. I have noticed the absence of may of my ole friends and that the crowd is much younger. I do miss the old days when things were much more "my crowd" I will still make an effort to visit but I think the "good old days" are passing.

We love the Derby. We eat dinner here every week due to the consistency. The service and food has always been divine. Cheese bread and clam chowder is the best in Southern California. I highly recommend the tuna and crap appetizer. It’s a meal by itself. The serving of the Baked Alaska is a great show. Let’s not forget the cocktails, they are strong the way we like it.

We enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch at The Derby. The restaurant was decorated with festive lights, garland, and other decorations.
The staff was friendly, attentive and professional.
Between us we dined on the Derby Cobb Salad with Filet Mignon, the Filet Mignon Steak Sandwich, and the Cajun Rib Eye Sandwich. All were well prepared and delicious.
We even splurged and ordered the Creme Brulee and Tuxedo Mousse Cake for dessert.
All in all a wonderful holiday lunch.

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience.
1. Our waiter had to many tables to cover.
2. It took far to long for our orders to come from the kitchen.
3. When it finally did come, it was cold and lacked taste
4. Unfortunately very overpriced...

I will say the manager did come by our table and asked how their signature macaroni and cheese side dish was so we told her what we felt. She did act very surprised and took it off our bill.

She also provided us with a complementary cheesecake dessert . Which turned out to be “not so good” either.☹️

It was a very rough dining experience. Maybe it was just a “one poor night” blemish.

We ordered the French Onion Soup (good and cheesy), Bacon-Wrapped Filet, Kansas City Filet, and the Porterhouse Steak Our waiter suggested we try the Potato Romanoff. It was very good. They give generous portions, so you can probably split a meal. My husband and I split the Porterhouse Steak, and they were kind enough to cook my half a little more. Everything was very delicious and seasoned well. We took my parents for their anniversary, and they ate everything on their plate. We were also given the Baked Alaska for desert.

I love this place. The management overbooked the restaurant not the waitresses fault. It took us 45 minutes to get a glass of water. Although we were all there for her party so it didn't matter to us I think the service as far as the management was very sad. The waitress was fantastic when she found out that we were her table

This was only our second time there, but it lived up to the great experience we had the first time. The food is very nice, with a good variety of choices. Our server was wonderful; she was polite and attentive without being intrusive.

I cant recommend this place highly enough!

Simply amazing! I had the filet with crab, mashed potatoes, and an appetizer of filet wrapped asparagus, and cheesecake for desert. Absolutely the best filet I've ever had. The cheesecake was amazing, and asparagus was great.

My nephew raved about the prime rib that he had.

Our server was new, but you wouldn't know it. She did a great job and was very friendly and knowledgeable.

The price was on par with other restaurants of this caliber, but the food quality here is the best I've had in the area.

Always enjoy the Derby. We always go there for special occasions, graduations, birthdays, etc. My only suggestion is to do away with the singer until most food service is complete. It made speaking across the table difficult. I have seldom seen them have a lounge singer and imagine it is a trial. I think that is a mis-trial. Other than that we will be back soon.

We come to the Derby at least twice a month. This time was for my husband’s 65th Birthday. We enjoy coming here because everything is consistent. Food and drinks are excellent and the service is incredible. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with such lovely hostesses. They are always dressed so nice and are always smiling. Our server was Barbara. She is so personable and always make us feel as if we are home. She has a wonderful soul and we love the stories she tells. The food is always cook to perfection and I highly recommended the Chicken Marsala and the sushi appetizer. The best part of the evening was the dessert. Every birthday we are served with the baked Alaska and it a great presentation. We love the Derby.

We frequent the Derby not as much as we used to. This visit was to celebrate my 63rd birthday. The food was the same, good. BUT the service was the worst I ever encountered in any restaurant that I have been. Never once did our server poured our wine. Although when she did see that I did pour, she came over to say " I'm sorry that was my job ". But after that she never came to the table to " To do her job". I even had to get up and ask another server in a different room if he would please bring me a side of Bearnaise sauce. To end this story short, it was just BAD.....

I went to the Derby following my previous outstanding dining experience 8 years ago. I live in the UK and it was supposed to be a special meal on the last night of our holiday. The service was appalling, I had to leave my table and go to a separate room to ask for a missing side dish. My nephew and Dad had their steaks switched which didn't become apparent until 2 thirds through the meal. The dress code is shown on the Derby website as Smart/Casual Business. We made the effort to wear a formal shirt, trousers and nice shoes. We were seated next to a family dressed like they had just returned from the beach, with 2 very young children who were very loud and vocal. The family turned out to be related to our server and the kids were his. The service was appalling and the food was mediocre. We had already dined during the week at BJ's and The Outback both within walking distance. They were both Excellent in every way and made the Derby look third rate. I complained about the issues to the manager and she deducted only $22.00 from our bill of $200.00. I argued with the manager and she called the police. I had to explain to the police my dis satisfaction and I was requesting a further $50.00 reduction. The police couldn't convince or force the manager to do this so we had to pay the bill requested. The police didn't leave until we had left the premises and walked to our hotel. Never in my 50 years have I experienced such appalling treatment, food and service from a restaurant, let alone the "world famous Derby" AVOID AT ALL COSTS
