My husband took me here for my birthday. It was perfect. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation so we sat in the bar and sampled the wine we brought from home. We were seated earlier than our reservation which was great. We both ordered a bacon wrapped filet with baked potatoes and a Cesar salad that we shared. The meat was cooked perfectly and was very tender as were the green beans and potato. Our waitress was very attentive. We were also pleasantly surprised when the waitress gave us baked Alaska for dessert free of charge because I had put that we were celebrating a birthday on my reservation details! It was served perfectly and tasted great! What a treat and it was eased the pain of getting another year older. Then after we left we noticed that we had left our wine holder bag that we had left behind so we were able to go right back and claim it without having to go home first.
Great family dinner while visiting California and wonderful that it was in walking distance from our hotel! Our waiter Chris was fantastic! The only complaint I would say is my crab cakes were slightly fishy tasting. Both my son and husband had the three course price fix for $51 and loved it! We ended the meal with a baked Alaska dessert - and it was delicious! Would definitely go back!
Really surprised how good the prime rib was. Ton's of flavor, tender and the au jus was perfect. Veggies were still crunchy not overcooked. Service was very good.
Overall, The Derby is an excellent choice for an upper scale date night that does not totally break the bank, but still has the atmosphere of a high-end establishment. Reservations were easy to make and were promptly honored. Food was, for the most part, well-prepared in terms of presentation and taste; certainly the creme brulee was easily the best we have ever tasted in any restaurant.
On the other side of the coin, the service was not as good as would be normal expected at an establishment of this caliber. Though hardly dismal, we waited for longer periods than most places would consider acceptable for drink refills and checking up on the table that all is well. Granted, we are not regulars, but that should not matter in the least. In addition, one of our steaks was overcooked by a considerable amount--ordered cooked "medium," it came out "well-done."
However, I would not hesitate to return to The Derby for any special occasion, and would recommend it to others freely.
My friend and I celebrated the birthday of another friend who lives near The Derby. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch and especially enjoyed the baked Alaska birthday dessert!
Amazing service by long time waitress, Barbara. First rate meal for a decent price. Love this place!
Dined here for my mother's birthday recently. I have eaten at the Derby occasionally over the years, though it has been some time since I have been there. The building still has its traditional, old-fashioned steakhouse with a race track memorabilia theme, pretty stained glass windows, and red leather booths. The dining room was very dimly lit, making it difficult to read the menu. We were not greeted as we entered the front door as the host station was empty and there was no one to be found. We took a seat on a leather bench near the door, and surprisingly when the hostesses did return to their station, we still received no greeting or even an inquiry as to whether or not we were there for a reservation . I'm not one who likes being fawned over in restaurants, but come on ladies, you are being paid to greet customers and be friendly!
Overall, service was fine but could benefit from slowing down and developing more ease and polish. To start, I ordered the iceberg wedge salad, which was very fresh and delicious. Almost half a head of iceberg lettuce topped with blue cheese dressing, bacon bits, tomato, avocado, and blue cheese crumbles. Their complimentary garlic cheese bread was also very tasty. My steak entree was a bit disappointing, however. I ordered the tournedo of filet mignon and scampi. While I knew the steak portion would be small (4 ounces, I think) what I received was tender and tasty but also microscopic! It actually looked more like a mushroom cap than a steak. It came with two large, butterflied shrimp crusted with a cheesy garlic mixture and a pot of melted butter that was supposed to pass for scampi. It wasn't bad, but not what most people will expect when they think of scampi. Very nice complimentary baked Alaska dessert for the birthday! Despite the minor flaws, it was a very pleasant experience and we will return.
Horrible experience. Food was under cooked. Our daughter is celiac they couild have cared less. Food was cross contaminated. Never going back
Great classic steakhouse.
Great time !
Food was great and our server Bobbie was sensational. Hope I got his name right he was kind of bald
Our experience was what we expected being horse lovers. The atypical decor is very fun and with the great food just makes it that much better for special occasions. The service was great and the food was wonderful.
Great food, great history, Tim our server was the Best!
Booked on open table. Took my 13 yo daughter to celebrate her for earning her Silver Award in Girl Scouts. Wish they would have acknowledged her achievement like they do on birthdays, and anniversaries. Nevertheless, her first visit here was a positive one. Server... Tim's service was spot on...awesome!
Great service met Martha. And the bartender was a great mixologist yet respected my companions specific instructions.
The pic 6 appetizer could easily have served as dinner
We went to the Derby for my husband's 60th birthday, at the suggestion of a friend who dines there on most special occasions. While the ambience and our server couldn't be beat, I found the food less than I expected. Truly, this is a restaurant that hasn't changed much since the 60's and still cranks out all the old standards in cuisine. I just found it to be less than stellar, as I told my friend. Fortunately my husband is far from being discriminating of the type of food they serve, and he was very happy. Would have like to have seen them serve garlic bread made with something other than sliced bread. Any self-respecting restauranteur KNOWS you make garlic toast with, at the very least, French bread or at least a sourdough baguette. Notwithstanding, this charming place has been feeding the locals (which we are not) for decades. Apparently they think it's just wonderful. We may or may not return....
Meal, service and ambience are unmatched. A perfect ending for a day at the races or, for that matter, any day. One of favorite restaurants of all time.
Always excellent! Food, service, friendliness make one feel like an honored guest.
Our favorite place to eat...tonight was not a shining star. Missed the music and it was understaffed so support service sooooooo slow. One bad night won’t prevent me from loving this place.
Had a fantastic time with friends celebrating a birthday. Barbara was wonderful, as always. Delicious food. My sea bass was so good. Perfectly prepared. Wish Christy and Dave were there. Will be back again soon!
It was very nice. Baked Alaska was a real treat.
We come here time to time but the service on this occasion was subpar. Otherwise, very nice; very much a landmark restaurant.
Food was very good
Dottie server was great we always ask for her
We all loved our dinners and the appetizers were good too. The steak was very tender. Wine was delicious. The only drawback was the dessert, none of us really liked our selections. Service did take a bit of time, but everyone was very polite and accommodating. Great date place.
My wife and I had not been to the Derby for awhile. Service has always been excellent, but food -- well -- has been hit and miss. This time it was great. Chateaubriand was cooked to perfection and tasted great. The special Stuffed Salmon dish was well prepared and tasty. Dry Beefeater Martinis were excellent too. All and all, my party of four had a great time. The prices are still high, but reasonable for the times. We will go back again.
The food was excellent but was fairly slow coming from the kitchen. The service was a little slow but to be fair is was pretty busy on Saturday evening. Dinners are expensive but really good food.
The only negative is that the server left the wine bottle on the table instead of offering a chilled wine bucket.
The Derby is one of my very favorite restaurants, and any chance I get to go there, I take it.
We had a wonderful evening on Saturday night. Our reservation was for 5:00 pm, and we arrived a bit early. The hostess was gracious enough to seat us, and our waiter Chris, was outstanding. The food, service, & ambiance was fabulous! We would highly
recommend this restaurant for everyone to enjoy.

It is difficult to write anything bad about an establishment that has been successfully in existence for over 70 years. Yet, I am afraid that The Derby has seen better days. Although we arrived early for dinner, we were seated in the least delightful area, right next to the bar. In the beginning this was alright, but halfway into our entrees the bar began to fill up with the "track crowd" who were, in general, ill mannered, loud, obnoxious and poorly dressed in their shorts, tees and flip flops. This rabble carried on loudly about their bad picks of the day while they swilled beer and waited for available tables. (They had no reservations.) Hmm. The service, on the other hand, was excellent. Chris was attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. The one glitch is that, through no fault of his, he could not provide us with the requested bordelaise sauce for our rib eye. That aside, the steaks, the fish, the baked potatoes all were delicious and in grand style. Unfortunately, the desserts did not live up to the establishment's claims. The bread pudding was a block of starch with flavoring poured over. The cheesecake would not have pleased your grandmother from Crown Heights. I was nice to have complimentary valet parking, but not desiring a repeat of dinner with also rans or the wannabe turf clubbers, I don't think we will return.
We had a pleasant experience with friends we had met on an Eastern European trip. The food, ambiance, and service were excellent. It made for an extremely pleasant evening.
Lunar new year eve celebration! Love the filet mignon!
The Derby is a great and special place. Valentines night we were seated in the patio. I will never sit there again. My wife thought it too casual for a special dinner. She was cold and the normally great service did not make it out to the patio. Food was good but steak seemed cold when I received it. Probably just an off night, but we will stick to the dining room.
We came for an early Valentines Day celebration dinner. We arrived early and was seated promptly. Our server Barbara was nice but came around rarely. After our dinner she asked us if we wanted dessert and left the dessert menu. It took a half hour or more for her to come back! So, we skipped dessert. No one ever came by to fill our water glasses, (everyone else got that). It seemed like he was focused on certain tables and never looked at us.
Despite the not so good service, the food was excellent! Our Cajun shrimp was delicious and our cowboy ribeye for two was perfectly spiced and cooked to our liking. The French onion soup is to die for! We had cocktails too, age bourbon old fashioned and an amaretto sour. Both were very good.
The Derby is close by, parking attached, friendly staff, good food
Great history, fun bar, overall nice experience
The Derby is a classic. I would recommend this fine restaurant for that special occasion or that evening out. Great menu and great service. I highly recommend the Filet and the Baked Alaska. The filet was cooked just right with a light char to add to the flavor.
Great place to eat, people watch and enjoy that special occasion..
Very nice staff and excellent food, and specials....
My experience the last two visits have seen a decrease in quality and service. Our steaks were so over cooked and my potatoes were luke warm at best. Our server was friendly but over whelmed as we did not see her more than once during the meal. The Derby used to be a "go to" spot but it is now just average and the competition far exceeds their food and service now.
Vern was an exceptional waiter! Amazing filet mignon, dessert, great atmosphere.
We were celebrating a few birthdays. The Derby is always great with good food. Vern our server was top notch! Definitely recommend!
