The Derby is more than a restaurant. Established in 1922, it has been family owned and operated since 1951. It is a grand museum showcasing some of horse racing's greatest moments. Diners are invited to take a break from the rush of modern life and travel back to the time of George Woolf, Seabiscuit and relive the excitement of The Race of the Century. We excel in offering the best grades of meat and extremely fresh seafood prepared by our longtime executive chef that would delight even the most discriminating of taste. Some of the menu highlights include the Bacon Wrap Filet, Delmonico New York, Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. We offer a wide selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass. Relax and enjoy a fine cognac or single malt scotch on our patio, or take in a sporting event on one of our three new plasma screen television sets. Dining at The Derby can only be compared to the feeling of holding the winning ticket when you smile and know that you made the right bet.

We come here time to time but the service on this occasion was subpar. Otherwise, very nice; very much a landmark restaurant.

We all loved our dinners and the appetizers were good too. The steak was very tender. Wine was delicious. The only drawback was the dessert, none of us really liked our selections. Service did take a bit of time, but everyone was very polite and accommodating. Great date place.

My wife and I had not been to the Derby for awhile. Service has always been excellent, but food -- well -- has been hit and miss. This time it was great. Chateaubriand was cooked to perfection and tasted great. The special Stuffed Salmon dish was well prepared and tasty. Dry Beefeater Martinis were excellent too. All and all, my party of four had a great time. The prices are still high, but reasonable for the times. We will go back again.

The food was excellent but was fairly slow coming from the kitchen. The service was a little slow but to be fair is was pretty busy on Saturday evening. Dinners are expensive but really good food.
The only negative is that the server left the wine bottle on the table instead of offering a chilled wine bucket.

The Derby is one of my very favorite restaurants, and any chance I get to go there, I take it.
We had a wonderful evening on Saturday night. Our reservation was for 5:00 pm, and we arrived a bit early. The hostess was gracious enough to seat us, and our waiter Chris, was outstanding. The food, service, & ambiance was fabulous! We would highly
recommend this restaurant for everyone to enjoy.

It is difficult to write anything bad about an establishment that has been successfully in existence for over 70 years. Yet, I am afraid that The Derby has seen better days. Although we arrived early for dinner, we were seated in the least delightful area, right next to the bar. In the beginning this was alright, but halfway into our entrees the bar began to fill up with the "track crowd" who were, in general, ill mannered, loud, obnoxious and poorly dressed in their shorts, tees and flip flops. This rabble carried on loudly about their bad picks of the day while they swilled beer and waited for available tables. (They had no reservations.) Hmm. The service, on the other hand, was excellent. Chris was attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. The one glitch is that, through no fault of his, he could not provide us with the requested bordelaise sauce for our rib eye. That aside, the steaks, the fish, the baked potatoes all were delicious and in grand style. Unfortunately, the desserts did not live up to the establishment's claims. The bread pudding was a block of starch with flavoring poured over. The cheesecake would not have pleased your grandmother from Crown Heights. I was nice to have complimentary valet parking, but not desiring a repeat of dinner with also rans or the wannabe turf clubbers, I don't think we will return.

The Derby is a great and special place. Valentines night we were seated in the patio. I will never sit there again. My wife thought it too casual for a special dinner. She was cold and the normally great service did not make it out to the patio. Food was good but steak seemed cold when I received it. Probably just an off night, but we will stick to the dining room.

We came for an early Valentines Day celebration dinner. We arrived early and was seated promptly. Our server Barbara was nice but came around rarely. After our dinner she asked us if we wanted dessert and left the dessert menu. It took a half hour or more for her to come back! So, we skipped dessert. No one ever came by to fill our water glasses, (everyone else got that). It seemed like he was focused on certain tables and never looked at us.

Despite the not so good service, the food was excellent! Our Cajun shrimp was delicious and our cowboy ribeye for two was perfectly spiced and cooked to our liking. The French onion soup is to die for! We had cocktails too, age bourbon old fashioned and an amaretto sour. Both were very good.

The Derby is a classic. I would recommend this fine restaurant for that special occasion or that evening out. Great menu and great service. I highly recommend the Filet and the Baked Alaska. The filet was cooked just right with a light char to add to the flavor.

My experience the last two visits have seen a decrease in quality and service. Our steaks were so over cooked and my potatoes were luke warm at best. Our server was friendly but over whelmed as we did not see her more than once during the meal. The Derby used to be a "go to" spot but it is now just average and the competition far exceeds their food and service now.

The Derby is a local icon. The entire restaurant is decorated with horse racing memorabilia but you don't have to be a racing fan to appreciate the menu. Steaks are the speciality, the Prime Rib is amazing, but they also have other equally great menu options. Chilean sea bass, atlantic salmon are great seafood options. We've had them all. French onion soup is amazing, as is their wedge salad, and the cheese toast is something you don't want to miss.
Their signature dessert is the Baked Alaska - always fun.
They have a full bar and a very decent wine list. Reasonable corkage if you prefer to bring your own. You can't go wrong here, although it CAN be noisy on a busy night, and it is not inexpensive. Don't come here thinking you are getting a discount Deal. Just a delicious meal.

Unlike many of the steakhouses in LA, the Derby’s emphasis is where it should be, on the food. Nobody is trying to posture and be seen, and the waiters engage you enhancing the experience. The food is excellent with the focus on the natural flavor of the meat and vegetables rather than the seasoning which in other venues overpowers the natural flavor of good meat and produce.
I can’t believe it has taken so long to find this gem, but I shall definitely return many times!

Had a lovely dinner as a last minute meet up with family. Our waiter was charming and obviously had regulars that sought him out. Have decided this is our go-to when meeting family from the OC as it is halfway from our locale in the valley.

This was an interesting evening. The service on a Sunday was slow, our server seemed tired. My friend’s steak was underdone as was my pork chop. A sauce cannot cover up for underdone pork. This restaurant really seems to rely on its history and longevity; the cuisine could improve.

Service was great, fast but not rushed. Ambience is classy and romantic, love the racetrack art and history. We all got our food at the same time and everyone enjoyed their meal. My meal was the only one that had an issue, I asked for rare and got medium and the filet was chewy. They were out of prime rib on a Saturday night, which is what I came for. But overall we really enjoyed ourselves.
