Always a good meal and good service at the Derby. Great for special occasions. Went for my birthday. Steaks we had were flavorful and tender and the potato romano was great for a change from the usual. They comped a baked Alaska which was delicious.
Barbara made the evening. She is the best, and the food was perfect as always.
As always everything was just right!
We celebrate all our special occasions here ❣️❣️❣️🎉🎉🎉
Overall We enjoyed the food, but I was not a big fan of the Caesar salad. The baked Alaskan was a hit with the family. We loved the service provided by Shannon, and the rest of the staff. I loved the fact that she let me use a pair of reading glasses for my menu. 🙏🏽
I had heard the food was very good but I found the cuisine a bit outdated and disappointing.
Our Prime Rib Sandwich was tasteless, it had no flavor, bread too soft and au jus tasteless. Our friend loved her turkey and cranberry sandwich and we did enjoy our Cobb salad and our server was very good.
WONDERFUL as always! Worth driving from Santa Barbara to experience The Derby. We’ll be back!
The Derby is a classy restaurant with a delightful ambiance I ordered from the prix fixe three course dinner menu. I had the shrimp and crab cocktail for appetizer – excellent, correct amount of horseradish. The fillet with scallops was juicy and tender and the cheese cake tasty. My wife enjoyed the chicken marsala – moist and delicious.
My family has dined at The Derby for over 60 years and always enjoy the experience and cuisine .
This is a great venue and one that I'll be sure to visit after the races at Santa Anita. It has a very classic feel and is decorated with some great vintage horse racing art. The cocktails are good, although not great. However, they have a very good wine list. The lobster bisque is THE BOMB. Maybe the best I've tried. The steaks are very good, and came prepared as requested. I will definitely visit whenever in the area.
Great old race track steak house Very important racetrack memorabilia throughout Great Manhattans Our server Barbara was a kick Great spot for after Santa Anita races especially if you have won enough to cover dinner.
We dined at The Derby on the eve of The Santa Anita Derby. The ambiance and the horse racing theme of the building was just the perfect setting for the occasion. From the valet who took care of our car at the entrance to our waiter who served us and said "Good-bye" when we were leaving the service was impeccable. My wife and I split an iceberg wedge salad and this dish was prepared with perhaps one of the best salad dressings of its type that I have tasted. My steak was cooked just the way that I ordered it and the topping on the steak was good but perhaps put on a little too thick as I had to scrape much of it off in order to fully enjoy the flavor of the meat. My wife ordered prime rib and this cut was excellent. What we couldn't finish we took back to our hotel and enjoyed a ready made breakfast the next morning. The restaurant's prices are commensurate with the nice surrounding and the quality of the food. The Derby is on our "to do" list the next time we return to Arcadia for the races.
Always great service and excellent food!
Great service and food. Enjoyed looking at all of the memorabilia while we waited.
Loved The Derby! Hadn’t been there for several years. Still the best. Tim was our wait person and he is fantastic! Great steaks, fish, salads and the service was too.
Went back again the following night and ate on the patio. It’s enclosed with an inviting fireplace and much quieter than the main dining room.
Next time our horse runs at Santa Anita, we will look forward to celebrating at the Derby.
To begin. Our waiter, was great. He was definitely on top of it, very personable and attentive. He provided great service! However, the food was not as great. My wife ordered a steak cooked to medium and it came out over cooked. I ordered the pork chop and although tasty at the moment I ended up getting sick from it. We ordered some sort of sampler special and it had jumbo shrimp tempura which was probably the best thing we had while dining there. The drinks were good, but not enough to keep us returning. Although the ambiance and history is great, I don’t think we would return.
The charm and elegance of the Derby is a rare thing these days. The menu features modern as well as with traditional favorites. Service is friendly, efficient and leaves nothing to be desired. The Derby is truly a gem among today's restaurants.
After booking the table we called to confirm that the larger group (6 people) would not be a problem and confirm our seating. When the hostess on the phone asked if there was a special occasion we told her this was a 50th birthday, she said that the waiter would be alerted. Not. The dinner was fine, heavy and old fashioned, but that is exactly what we expected. We didn't expect bus staff to hover and repeatedly try to take plates while we were still eating. We felt rushed and most unwelcomed. It was no surprise that the waiter apparently was not alerted to the special birthday or to the basics of service.
This was our first time in over a year to revisit the Derby. In the past, we had issues both with the food and the service. Such was not the case this time. Our server Bobby was both efficient and most hospitable in providing a high level of service. Our food was served hot and the presentation was enticing. Altogether, this was a very good dining experience and we will return soon!
This was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was amazing. I will recommend this to all my friends and cant wait to go back.
Nice quiet atmosphere. ( A little dark). Food and service were excellent! Desserts were excellent ( and fattening) lol! Thank you for the great evening!
Martinis so good. Garlic cheese bread so good. Steaks so good. Our server Shannon, so wonderful!
A great place to eat for something more upscale. Great service, friendly waiters, and prompt service. I never had to ask for a drink refill because the staff anticipated my needs very well. The seating is comfortable, private, and fancy. 10/10 recommend for a date, or nice outing.
Sat in the small fireplace room, which is the best for a quiet meal. Everything was great
Love this place. Every day after races!! History, tradition and ambiance make it great.
Great food, great service, warming atmosphere, one of my very favorite restaurants.
It was a wonderful place to celebrate any occasion. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly and very accommodating. The food was outstanding. Will definitely be back.
Very disappointed in our evening. The food was ill prepared; from the over dressed salads, to the tiny cold baked potatoes, to the under-cooked filet, and the Prime Rib extremely fatty and inedible. For a special occasion evening, and for an expensive restaurant - no service should be provided as an opportunity to train a waiter either. The trainee could have handled the service alone, and done a much better job without the other server standing over him and interrupting. This was not a normal experience at the Derby, I hope things improve.
Great traditional steakhouse! Love the decor and memorabilia.
Very nice anniversary celebration
My husband took me here for my birthday. It was perfect. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation so we sat in the bar and sampled the wine we brought from home. We were seated earlier than our reservation which was great. We both ordered a bacon wrapped filet with baked potatoes and a Cesar salad that we shared. The meat was cooked perfectly and was very tender as were the green beans and potato. Our waitress was very attentive. We were also pleasantly surprised when the waitress gave us baked Alaska for dessert free of charge because I had put that we were celebrating a birthday on my reservation details! It was served perfectly and tasted great! What a treat and it was eased the pain of getting another year older. Then after we left we noticed that we had left our wine holder bag that we had left behind so we were able to go right back and claim it without having to go home first.
Great family dinner while visiting California and wonderful that it was in walking distance from our hotel! Our waiter Chris was fantastic! The only complaint I would say is my crab cakes were slightly fishy tasting. Both my son and husband had the three course price fix for $51 and loved it! We ended the meal with a baked Alaska dessert - and it was delicious! Would definitely go back!
Really surprised how good the prime rib was. Ton's of flavor, tender and the au jus was perfect. Veggies were still crunchy not overcooked. Service was very good.
Overall, The Derby is an excellent choice for an upper scale date night that does not totally break the bank, but still has the atmosphere of a high-end establishment. Reservations were easy to make and were promptly honored. Food was, for the most part, well-prepared in terms of presentation and taste; certainly the creme brulee was easily the best we have ever tasted in any restaurant.
On the other side of the coin, the service was not as good as would be normal expected at an establishment of this caliber. Though hardly dismal, we waited for longer periods than most places would consider acceptable for drink refills and checking up on the table that all is well. Granted, we are not regulars, but that should not matter in the least. In addition, one of our steaks was overcooked by a considerable amount--ordered cooked "medium," it came out "well-done."
However, I would not hesitate to return to The Derby for any special occasion, and would recommend it to others freely.
My friend and I celebrated the birthday of another friend who lives near The Derby. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch and especially enjoyed the baked Alaska birthday dessert!
Amazing service by long time waitress, Barbara. First rate meal for a decent price. Love this place!
Dined here for my mother's birthday recently. I have eaten at the Derby occasionally over the years, though it has been some time since I have been there. The building still has its traditional, old-fashioned steakhouse with a race track memorabilia theme, pretty stained glass windows, and red leather booths. The dining room was very dimly lit, making it difficult to read the menu. We were not greeted as we entered the front door as the host station was empty and there was no one to be found. We took a seat on a leather bench near the door, and surprisingly when the hostesses did return to their station, we still received no greeting or even an inquiry as to whether or not we were there for a reservation . I'm not one who likes being fawned over in restaurants, but come on ladies, you are being paid to greet customers and be friendly!
Overall, service was fine but could benefit from slowing down and developing more ease and polish. To start, I ordered the iceberg wedge salad, which was very fresh and delicious. Almost half a head of iceberg lettuce topped with blue cheese dressing, bacon bits, tomato, avocado, and blue cheese crumbles. Their complimentary garlic cheese bread was also very tasty. My steak entree was a bit disappointing, however. I ordered the tournedo of filet mignon and scampi. While I knew the steak portion would be small (4 ounces, I think) what I received was tender and tasty but also microscopic! It actually looked more like a mushroom cap than a steak. It came with two large, butterflied shrimp crusted with a cheesy garlic mixture and a pot of melted butter that was supposed to pass for scampi. It wasn't bad, but not what most people will expect when they think of scampi. Very nice complimentary baked Alaska dessert for the birthday! Despite the minor flaws, it was a very pleasant experience and we will return.
Horrible experience. Food was under cooked. Our daughter is celiac they couild have cared less. Food was cross contaminated. Never going back
Great classic steakhouse.
