Steakhouse
The Derby is more than a restaurant. Established in 1922, it has been family owned and operated since 1951. It is a grand museum showcasing some of horse racing’s greatest moments. Diners are invited to take a break from the rush of modern life and travel back to the time of George Woolf, Seabiscuit, and relive the excitement of “The Race of the Century”. We excel in offering the best meat and fresh seafood hand selected by our longtime executive chef that would delight even the most discriminating of taste. Some of the menu highlights include the Bacon Wrapped Filet, Delmonico New York, Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. We offer a wide selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass. Relax and enjoy a delicious meal in one of our iconic red leather booths, take in a beautiful evening on our terrace, or watch a sporting event in our bar and lounge. Dining at The Derby can only be compared to the feeling of holding the winning ticket when you smile and know that you made the right choice!

We made a reservation for my father's 80th birthday, and requested near the fire away from the cold as my mother has stage 4 lung cancer. They put us directly next to the open windows, and there were heaters in the room. We bundled my mom in two coats, and scarves, but it was still too cold. They really couldn't care less.

Took our best friends as we had such a tremendous initial experience previously. Food was perfect, from soup to dessert. Was seated early which was awesome, and had excellent customer experience after. Only challenge had NOTHING to do with the Derby; because of COVID, we were in the patio area with no bar available.
Look forward to our next time there. Best steak I have eaten.

Celebrated a lovely birthday even w/out the table side Baked Alaska. Three course dinner had great choices; patio dining is creative and pleasant.

Parking is confusing as signs as you enter say there is valet--but there is not valet parking. Sat for about 10 minutes as I was early; luckily another customer called the restaurant and we were told we had to self park---I realize every city/restaurant has it own rules--so clear signage would be helpful!

Cute outdoor patio for outdoor dining. My heart was set to order Prime Rib but it got sold out for the night so opted for rib eye and salmon. Nice presentation, good portion, tastes great. Will definitely try to come back another time for the Prime rib.

Nice setup for dining during the pandemic. As usual the food and service was good, although my prime rib was a little on the chewy side. Usually ordered a filet but thought I'd try the prime rib for a change. I'll stick with the filet in the future.

We were disappointed in the time limit. We were trying to catch up which forced us to stand in the parking lot for an hour, otherwise it was all good.

This was the our first time dining on the outdoor patio and we found it very nice in a comfortable setting. The misters worked very well in keeping the environment cool and pleasant. As always the food was outstanding. Our server was excellent; my only comment is that in my opinion the general service was a little under staffed for the number of occupied tables. Still, we were treated very well. Also, when we arrived, we had to wait a few minutes to be seated and there was no place to sit while we waited in a very warm area in front of the entrance. This was difficult for my 90+ mother who can only stand for a short period of time. We hadn't planned on the complications of that but realize that is just dealing with the covid-19 virus these days! Nevertheless, thank you for a wonderful dinner and experience.

The Derby tried very hard given the COVID circumstance. The service was outstanding! Removing Prime Rib from the LA Dine menu was very disappointing. This was made worse by choosing the rib eye which is a $5 add to the overall cost. The rib eye, though cooked perfectly, was 30% fat. I was with two other people and chose not to comment to our server. I hope my next visit will better match, or possibly, exceed previous visits.

Came in for 6:30 reservation - we arrived at 6:20 and we were told to wait outside. Having a handicapped individual with us it was a good thing we had a camp chair in our car. We waited outside until 6:45 to be seated.

Menu we needed a reader imbedded in our cell phone to read the menu. We only had 1 phone that could do this.

Food: as usual delicious- we came in to celebrate my sister’s birthday. We enjoyed stuffed salmon, lamb, sea bass, shrimp scampi and NY ribeye. Everyone was happy with their selections.

This is our go to location for family celebrations - yes even in this new age we live in!

We will be back!

Thank you for dining with us last night. Unfortunately, we do have to ask guests to wait outside the building until their table is ready as per state guidelines. I apologize that you were seated 9 minutes past your reservation. We do our best to seat in a timely manner but with the limited number of tables we are allowed to use, it can be challenging. I am thrilled that everyone was happy with their meals and we look forward to your next visit. Thank you, Tyler Z. General Manager

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary this week at The Derby. It was great given the circumstances with COVID.

They had a LA Dining promo of $55 for a three course meal (extra $5 charge if you chose the bone in rib eye steak).

My wife and I both chose the shrimp cocktail for our appetizers. She chose the bacon wrapped filet and I chose the bone in rib eye steak. She had the cheesecake while I had the bread pudding. All of the food was excellent. The shrimp cocktail have huge shrimp that were super fresh and the cocktail sauce was great. Both entrees were exceptional, cooked to perfection and unctuous. The desserts were perfect in proportion (not huge after eating two course prior).

The ambiance was good in that they are using their covered patio which has open curtains. It was a cool night and we sat next to a window where we had a nice cool breeze but the entire room was cool. I can't speak to what it would be like if it was a really hot night.

Our server (sorry, can't remember her name but maybe Beverly?) even brought us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary which is their signature Baked Alaska which was great so we took our ordered desserts home for the next night. She was great all meal in checking on us constantly and our waters were continuously refilled by another server.

All in all, another exceptional mean at The Derby!

This particular trip to the Derby was for my Birthday. Having been there a couple of months before, I was expecting a quiet, relaxing setting. However, given the constraints of only seating and serving outside, there were quite a few disappointments on this trip. Had phoned ahead to say we were running a few minutes late from our reservation, and we were told that was no problem. However, when we arrived there was no seating, for almost 1/2 hour. Upon being seated, we could not hear each other at all. Don't know if it was where we were seated or the acoustic of the patio, but it was extremely loud the entire time. It took a long time to be waited on as the staff seemed overwhelmed. Even though my son is eighteen he was served coke in a very small glass, and immediately had to ask for a refill twice, before a refill in a larger glass was brought. Calamari appetizer was more like fingers than the rings we have come accustomed to, and only had one dipping sauce. My son requested the prime steak sandwich but we were then told they had run out of prime rib. He ordered the crab cakes requesting it as a meal, but no sides were brought. He also found it quite spicy. I ordered shrimp scampi as I had before, and it was good. Brought baked Alaska for everyone for dessert which was nice. Still a nice experience, but we may wait until the dining room opens again before returning.

Absolutely the WORST environment for dinner in a long time! We have a special occasion booked here in September, so I thought we better make a “trial run” before the event. First, the room was SO HOT! Ceiling fans with misters made the brick enclosed “patio” feel like a sauna! We literally had perspiration running down our backs & forehead! We asked the server if we could crack open the back door for a little cross-ventilation to which she replied, “I don’t think so.” That was her final answer. Dinner was OK. Nothing noteworthy. Baked Alaska for dessert was an epic FAIL! No browned meringue & no cake...basically cold vanilla ice cream with whipped topping. Heat must have gotten to the server too because she definitely had an attitude! Cancelling the upcoming event. I would not recommend this until after COVID restrictions are lifted & dine-in air conditioning is available!

Hi Pat, I have tried to contact you numerous times to follow up with you regarding your experience. While we cannot control the weather, we have invested in the best cooling system available for our terrace to ensure guests are as cool as possible given the current circumstances. Unfortunately we are not permitted to prop open our emergency exit. Our Baked Alaska does not have any cake in it and you had specifically requested less alcohol on it which is what is used to toast the meringue.

It was great getting to go out to dinner, but if one table wants fans off, the rest of us suffered in the heat. Fans need to be on, it's hot outside. Servers should get to wear different uniforms, all black long sleeves is way too hot.

Service and food were great! The only issue we had was an employee cleaning up tables, then replenishing water glasses on every table in the dining area without ever changing his gloves. With regards to precautions being taken everywhere due to covid, that was our only issue.
