Steakhouse
The Derby is more than a restaurant. Established in 1922, it has been family owned and operated since 1951. It is a grand museum showcasing some of horse racing's greatest moments. Diners are invited to take a break from the rush of modern life and travel back to the time of George Woolf, Seabiscuit and relive the excitement of The Race of the Century. We excel in offering the best grades of meat and extremely fresh seafood prepared by our longtime executive chef that would delight even the most discriminating of taste. Some of the menu highlights include the Bacon Wrap Filet, Delmonico New York, Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. We offer a wide selection of wines by the bottle and by the glass. Relax and enjoy a fine cognac or single malt scotch on our patio, or take in a sporting event on one of our three new plasma screen television sets. Dining at The Derby can only be compared to the feeling of holding the winning ticket when you smile and know that you made the right bet.

We have had several good experiences at the Derby in the past. True, it's overpriced. But it is an iconic "red leather" steak house with a horse racing themed ambiance that is unique and fun. However, our experience two nights ago was poor. First, the restaurant was freezing cold - AC perhaps set for working employees, but not for sedentary diners. On the upside, they turned down the AC when my wife noted the blizzard. More importantly, the service was very slow - a circumstances that our server apologized for (without any prompting). And when the food arrived, my wife's "medium well done" steak was blood red and had to be sent back. It returned correctly cooked, but a twice-cooked steak isn't exactly what we paid $35 for. Other than extra cheese bread during the long wait to be served, there was no effort to apologize for the wait and uncooked steak (a scoop of ice cream would have gone a long way toward making the total $140 dinner for 2 a bit more digestable). I hope it was just an off night. So we shall try the Derby again. But "fool me twice" and I won't go back for "try three."

No one came by our table for the first 10 minutes. Got a little nervous thinking this was not a good sign. Then the manager Tyler came by, apologized for the wait, and then turned us over to Thomas. Everything was great after that. Service was exceptional, the grilled halibut and wedge salad was delicious and the prime rib cooked to perfection. Lovely dining room, nice and relaxed atmosphere! Great restaurant for a special occasion or just anytime you want an excellent meal! Definitely will be returning!

We have had many happy occasions celebrated at the Derby and hope to continue the tradition.
The ambiance, the food, the attention given by the staff is what makes the Derby so enjoyable.
Thank you!

Service was great but very disappointed with one of the meals with our table of 4. The menu said it was stuffed halibut and was stuffed with crab and shrimp. Well my food arrived and the halibut had a tiny bit of crab and shrimp and a lot of mushrooms which I do not like and will not eat. After mentioning it to the waiter, he checked the menu and agreed with me it was not listed. The manager came over and told us he would consider changing the menu. He also had the waiter bring us baked Alaska for dessert which made no sense as our dinners came with it. I would have rather had him take off my entree which I did not eat one bite of & at very least just charged me for the baked potato which is the only thing I ate. I will return as I enjoy this restaurant and we had a good time. Just ask the waiter next time what is in anything that is stuffed.

I loved the old school feel of The Derby. The brickwork, soft lights and red upholstered booths really set the mood for a unique experience. Our server was attentive but not intrusive: just right. I ordered a salad because I wanted to try the Baked Alaska. The salad was plentiful and I took 1/2 of it home. Now, the presentation of the Baked Alaska was phenomenal. It was brought tableside and was ignited before our very eyes. It was perfect to split between 2 people and the taste: delicious!! A perfect ending to a perfect experience. I will have to go back again and try a real dinner item. I could not give it a higher recommendation!

It was our first time at the Derby and we were celebrating my father’s 70th Birthday. Everything was perfect! The restaurant is beautiful and classy. We got a big comfy vintage booth and we were lucky enough to get Barbara as our server. She has a great sense of humor and made us feel so comfortable right away. We felt so special. They brought complimentary dessert they they poured rum over and lit on fire. Such a great presentation! The steak the best I’ve has in my life. I can’t wait to go back and get it again. From the garlic bread to the cocktails, this place is amazing!

We went to the Derby to celebrate my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. They love the Derby and felt we honored them by taking them there. The staff was professional and personable. We were seated at our reservation time. The food is amazing! It was fresh and favorable. There were many items to choose from. The only complaint I had was they didn't offer my parents a complementary dessert. Sixty years deserves a free piece of cake! Overall it was a fun and memorable evening.

Hello, I am very to hear your steak was not juicy. It surprises me to hear this as steaks are what we do best! Did you have a chance to speak with a manager regarding your dissatisfaction? We would have been happy to correct the situation as our USDA Prime steaks are usually juicy and flavorful. I will be sure to share your kind words with your server, Chris- they are greatly appreciated. We hope to see you again soon. Best, Tyler Z. General manager

This was my first, but certainly not last time at The Derby. I have been a racing buff since I was a child. My father used to take me to Agua Caliente in Tijuana, Del Mar, Hollywood Park, and Santa Anita. We live in San Clemente and were going to see the Rolling Stones at the Rose Bowl and I thought this would be a real treat for a pre-concert dinner, it exceeded my expectations.
The decor is retro chic with a racing theme and it stirred many a memory. From the painting of Willie Shoemaker to Laffit Pincay's tack in the trophy case, as my fiance said, "Joe was in heaven". Classic "Steakhouse Red" booths greeted us with the comfort of my favorite shoes. and soon a perfect vodka martini was sitting in front of me. I ordered the Gary Stevens Delmonico New York and it was cooked to perfection! Ask for the garlic cheese bread as it's a real treat. My other half had the scampi. She loved it.
I can't wait for the next time, that time it'll be after going to Santa Anita!
LOVED IT!

We wanted a night out after a long week. There was a family next to us with three small kids who were extremely noisy. IPads playing movies for the kids, crying, screaming and then the parents encouraging the kids to get up and dance in the are in front of the singer (who was awesome btw).

I don’t feel the Derby is an appropriate restaurant for small children, but the lack of consideration for the other customers by the parents was unpalatable. I realize restaurants cannot manage families, but maybe an area of the restaurant could be designated as a “family with small children area” and that’s not where music is being performed.

The Derby
Responded on August 23, 2019

Hi Jim, I am very sorry to hear that the family next to you disrupted your dinner. While we do our very best to seat families with small children away from other parties, at times that is not possible. We're glad you enjoyed your meal and the live music and we hope to see you again soon.

A totally lousy dining experience when we are told at the end of our meal we could not use the Derby gift cards from Costco Because we ordered food off the price fix menu. This is something that was not mentioned to us and even though they have it mentioned at the very bottom of the menu in very tiny practically unreadable print, the server didn't mention it at all to us and we are left with $200 in gift cards we could not use. The management could have cared less and we were stuck with a very expensive bill. Not happy and have zero desire to go back there.

As I said when we spoke that night, I do understand your frustration and I do care. We take our guests' opinions very seriously and due to that I have discussed the policy with my team and we will no longer be enforcing it. Costco gift cards are now accepted for both our DineLA as well as our happy hour menus. I hope that you join us again soon. Best, Tyler Z.
