The Dawson Ratings and Reviews
My favorite spot in the River West Area. Food is fantastic, cocktails even better. Always friendly and welcoming staff. Fun events, live music every now and then, and the best outdoor bar/patio in the area. When the weather is even remotely warm it's my favorite place to go for a cocktail and sit outside - they even have a large outdoor fireplace for cool nights. Just an all-around great spot.
We have dined here a few times & loved it, but had a not so great experience this time /: One if our party had a food allergy & after the food arrived & we started asking questions, it was clear our server spent all of his time grooming his mustache rather than learning the menu. This definitely will make us reconsider the Dawson in the future...especially when we already thought the prices were above where they should be.
My wife and I are geezers. The Dawson is close to our apartment, so we go there from time to time. We usually complain about the noise and laugh that we are the oldest in the restaurant -- usually by 40 years! On December 6, 2017, we decided to have dinner there and just to roll with the noise and have fun.
An excellent Manhattan got the fun rolling.
The food is usually good. On December 6, it was outstanding. The dates rolled in bacon appetizer was unusual and tasty. Me wife had great salad that was large enough to furnish us lunch the next day. (Geezers like that!) My cavatelli was excellent. The portion was large enough that I could have taken a box, but I ate it all.
This restaurant was spectacular! I work in Chicago and am always looking for places to take customers that are unique and leave an impression. The wine list was sparse, but very reasonable and had a wide enough variety to be good for every level of buyer and connoisseur. The food was excellent! Definitely, a return trip is in order!
I had one of the best dinners I've ever had at The Dawson! We started with the chorizo fondue and the fried lobster, which we could have made a meal of, and if we went back, we probably would! Then I had the special- the gnocchi with duck confit, which was absolutely fabulous, and my husband had the bone-in filet, which he loved. We also split an order of fries, and the aioli was scrumptious. Our server was so pleasant and brought us Prosecco to celebrate our anniversary, as well as shots of their bourbon drip when we were finished. What a tremendous meal!
It was overall poor. At one point my guest and I both ordered martinis and one was full to the brim, the other was filled 3/4. When we questioned the disparity we were dared by our waitress to take out our olives as if the weight was the cause. It was not- and so she proceeded to scurry away with no apology. Additionally we ordered a half dozen oysters and were brought a dozen- then questioned on it, then watched the oysters go back to the kitchen only to be returned to us. It was haphazard and sloppy- the food did not make up for the mistakes.
The food was fantastic but overpriced. We had a group of six and were seated in the bar, even though we arrived early and the dining room didn't appear to be full. The bar is lovely and the mezcal cocktails are excellent.
Our server was indifferent. She didn't seem enthusiastic about anything on the menu or her job in general (but everyone can have an off day)
Overall it wasn't a bad experience. It just could have been much better, and we spent a fortune.
Living in the neighborhood, I have lots of options, so I doubt I will go back (although that mezcal cocktail was soooo delicious)! On second thought, I will go back in the summer and check out the outdoor garden. I'm all for giving places a second chance....
Numerous times during the meal I said YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM!!!!! Sooooo delicious! The chopped salad and mussels with coconut curry sauce were amazing! I didn't think I could be wowed by a salad. The sauce in the mussels was superb. For an entree I got the scallops which were tender and tasty. The tequila sangria was also a great choice!
Our dinner at the Dawson was amazing. There were 5 of us taking a friend from out of town to dinner. The scene was perfect, lively, happening, and energetic. The menu options were perfect and while somewhat limited for a vegan who was in attendance, there were at least a few options that worked and were delicious. The server was knowledgeable and friendly and everything we tried was amazing. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
This has become an 'old-standby'. A large bar on the first floor gives off a vibrant feeling. A more subdued seating area is upstairs. The service is always first rate. I've never had a bad dish here. For appetizers/sides we had the mac & cheese as well as the octopus. Both were great, particularly the latter. The fried chicken was very good but not spectacular. My friend had the mixed grill which was terrific.
A great cocktail menu well executed.
Great atmosphere and perfect for getting together to see old friends! Multiple servers were part of our experience which worked out nicely for our group size. The only thing that stood out to me that wasn't entirely great was the employee standing in the foyer. Employee wasn't the friendliest when guests asked questions which was a little bit of a turn off. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this spot!
