Everything was great. Food delicious, warm and pleasant atmosphere, great service. What will be my suggestion to servers “be less assertive cleaning the plates and glasses after guests.” A bit more time to slowly enjoy the meal will be greatly appreciated.
Service was exceptional and I’m a former server at a fine-dining restaurant! Food quality was excellent and impressive. Drink selection was beyond our high standards. Will visit again!
Loved the ambiance --great space and decor. We went for brunch and the food was delicious. Will definitely return and recommend to friends.
We had such a blast at brunch! The Dawson is a beautiful bright space inside & out. You don't even notice how close you are to a busy intersection and the highway.
Our waiter was lovely and had perfect timing - such a great sense of when to let us chat and when to order. All of the food was excellent and beautifully plated (shout out to the cinnamon roll, avocado toast & steak & poblano eggs!). I can't wait to go back to sample the rest of the menu!
Our brunch was fantastic!! The food was so good. I got the avocado toast, it was perfect for a nice spring day.

Excellent experience overall. Strong cocktail menu and creative menu. Favorites were the chicken fried lobster and the brussel sprouts
We used to live in the neighborhood and frequented The Dawson regularly, then moved to the suburbs. We had had a night to ourselves so we went in for dinner and forgot just how much we love this place. We’ve probably eaten dinner there ~20 times and never had a bad experience and the food is always great. I had the whole branzino tonight and it was fantastic, I’m glad they brought the whole fish back to the menu!
Grace was awesome!
We have been a few times and sadly this was our worst experience. The menu changed and the fried chicken option was gone, bummer. The fried lobster was pure breading, not worth $18. And basil Hayden was out of stock... the serviced seemed overwhelm and maybe even lacked common sense? She did end the night with a free sample of some gross bourbon but overall, lack luster.
We went to the Dawson for out anniversary dinner. We made a reservation, and we were a little disappointed with where we were seated - the large restaurant was relatively empty but we were sat very close to other guests, giving our experience a less intimate feel. Still, as the night went on we were impressed with the food and drinks. We ordered the oysters and the prawns to start, and for entree we each had the Hanger Steak. I've been thinking about the food ever since we left and I certainly plan to go back. I'd love to go when the weather is nicer since they had a beautiful patio that is known to have live music during the summer.
We had a business dinner and needed it to be at a sound level we can talk over. After being seated at one table that was not going to work. The staff took us to a much better table and the dinner went off with out a hitch. Might have landed a deal worth about $2,000,000.00. Client loved the hipness of Dawson....When ever I am selling in store displays or point of purchase services I am going to The Dawson !!!
The hangar steak was incredible! Great atmosphere
The Dawson has good food, and even better service. The staff was super attentive and pleasant.
Would definitely recommend a visit!
I was actually on a date with my 10-year-old son. We both loved it. It was definitely a higher price-point than the places I usually take my kid, but it felt like a very special night. As he said, "It feels fancy but casual, like you can't be too dressed up or too dressed down."
The service was great, from the second we walked in and the hosts took our coats until the end when the phenomenal bus-boy boxed up my son's leftovers.
The food was delicious. We definitely want to go back with my husband.
Oh, and it was beautiful inside!!!
Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was solid. The space is so great.
The Dawson is an incredible spot in River West. The space itself is very cool, the food incredible and the drinks unique and delicious. Would recommend to anyone!
We loved Dawson! We knew it would be high energy and expected great decor and terrific cocktails. It did not disappoint. But we were ready for mediocre food based on some reviews we read. We tried to avoid dishes people didn’t seem to like and enjoyed every single dish. Chorizo fondue and burrata were solid starters. Butcher’s Sausages with spicy mustard, House giardeniera and glazed fingerlings were outstanding. Brussel sprouts were a perfect side. Service was also terrific. We are definitely going back.
Loved the vibe. Brunch was amazing and worth every penny!
Really enjoyed the cocktails and ambiance. The food was good, but some items higher priced than expected. Overall highly recommend!
Everything was great but it was way too loud for a conversation.
Waitress was extremely disengaged and had trouble take our orders in a sufficient amount of time. Disappointed with my “Avocado Toast” and overall not satisfied with the service. Place is beautiful, however!
Horrible service, and extremely small menu. There were only 4 items listed u fee entrees and none of them sounded appetizing. The food came cold and tasted extremely bland. We only saw our waitress when she took our order and brought our food. Overall very disappointed with this establishment and would most defiantly not recommend eating here. The bar seemed ok though.
I come here all the time and typically really enjoy it. I brought friends visiting from out of town yesterday for a special occasion, and even though we had a reservation we had to wait over ten mins to even get in, and on top of this the the restaurant made us sit in a strange upstairs dining room (which I’ve never seen before in 20+ times I’ve been there). The room was extremely hot then extremely cold, dark with low ceilings, and a much more informal bar scene than the actual restaurant downstairs. When we asked to have a table in the normal area the hostess was super unfriendly and told us it’d be over an hour wait. When we asked for it to at least be less hot upstairs (it was abnormally hot), the hostess had an attitude about this as well. Have hosts with a service mentality and let people know in advance if they have to sit in a substandard area, even with a reservation (I never would’ve brought my friends to this restaurant had I known we’d be sitting in an 85 degree or 55 degree dark informal bar room. Very weird Saturday night dinner). *the server and food were good, which is typical Dawson, but the beginning of this experience and the ambiance made me think twice about returning. VERY disappointed with this experience.
Fantastic and consistent. We started off with the appetizers of cauliflower which was delightful Indian spiced, meatballs which the recipe is no longer the same as previous times but equally unique, and the old favorite of chicken fried lobster. We continued with the pork chop which the sauce we were told takes up to 30 hours to make! You can feel the complexity and taste the love! I even used some of the sauce on my bone in filet! The restaurant uses solid ingredients, plans out dishes and executes! It is always solid meal! Pricey but not insane! Vibrant and energetic and the people in the restaurant were all having a great time! May have a little hard time hearing if you go during popular dining hours.
Had a wonderful meal with a friend pre-theater on Friday 3/16. The service was excellent: the server and bus staff all were attentive and prompt. Really great. Thank you.
I've dined at The Dawson many times and it is always a great experience with great food and excellent service. I'll be back!
It was my turn to pick out a Restaurant for our Anniversary and I chose here. We saw it once when we were driving in the area and I made sure to save this for a restaurant for us to try. I looked into the menu and atmosphere and I thought it was very cozy and creative. We arrived and it was just as awesome as the pictures! Our server, Derrick and his Shadow (I forget his name, but, he was in training) were very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back for those Mussels!
Slightly above mediocre considering the price.
Great experience. Food, staff and ambiance was very nice.
Extreamly noisey to the point where you cannot hear yourself think, or carry on a conversation with the person across the table.
Came in for dinner on a Friday evening around 8 pm. While the decor was pretty , the noise level felt like we walked into a club. After finding out our table is in the second floor, I though great, must be where all the dinner parties are, leaving the first floor for your after work Friday day drinking crowd.
Nope. Not the case.
Still, all of us figured ok, it's loud but we're here and let's just get a cocktail or two to help us get through till dinner is served. We did just that and the drinks were great, hence my happy hour recommendation. The server was not available right away but a manager dropped by to get our drink order which was nice. The noise level kept rising. We had a second round and ordered food: mussels, bass (fish of the day), burger, and scallops. All was of the main entree option. The food arrived and much to our surprise the scallop dinner was basically an appetizer- 3 scallops folks, $30.00, that's all.
After the manager came by to check in, we kinda joked (not really) how we had to share our food with the scallop orderee, wishing we didn't have to. He mumbled and walked away, classic.
With so many great restaurants who have stellar service and serve delicious food, it's a real shame for this place not to be upfront with customers or rectify something which was clearly not cool.
3 scallops for $30.00. Not worth it.
We ordered the burger and the cavatelli. Both were good. The fries with the burger were cooked perfectly, and were the best I've had in a long time. We also ordered the sprouts and the mac and cheese as a side. The sprouts were tasty, but the mac and cheese was dull. Overall pretty good experience except for the noise level and the lack of light. For reference, the candle looked obnoxiously bright.
I love this place. But sometimes it gets so noisy I wonder if I should look for other places!
The Dawson puts an interesting twist on everything they serve, which makes it a great change of pace from a million burger/steak spots around the city. This is a favorite spot in the summer when the patio is open, but it's warm and inviting in winter as well. It's a great feature that we never order anything that we can get in essentially the same presentation elsewhere--the recipes and presentation are original and enjoyable. The beer list is somewhat limited, but the choices are always solid. Servers are accommodating and the tables are spaced comfortably.
Food was good. Service was okay.
Loved The Dawson! We went for brunch. It was our first time there and we'll definitely be back.
We had a fantastic meal, will definitely return!
