The Dark Room @ The Grandel
The only way for a person in a wheelchair to get in is a side door off the parking lot and it was locked. So, couldn't get in. Had to pound on the door to get someone's attention; humiliating. I recently complained to the Kranzberg Foundation about the access difficulties getting into the Grandel, and they sent me a gift certificate to the Dark Room as an apology, so it was pretty exasperating and ironic that I couldn't get in the door to use the gift certificate sent as an apology for the difficulties getting in.
It was a great meal. My only complaint was that the piano player, who was awesome, was so loud I couldn't have a conversation with my friend across the table.
What a find this place is. We were going to the symphony and this was a perfect dining option. We parked the car and headed in and left after dining and walked across to Powell. The food and service were fantastic. We made reservations and the table was waiting as we entered. Only thing, it was quite loud as it is a piano/music dining venue. The piano player was superb, but our proximity was much too close and his playing was much too loud.
Food and service were good as always, but Ptah blew us away!
Was a great experience as always
Great service and food. Ptah Williams was excellent. A wonderful evening.
We went to the Dark Room on a Saturday evening before a show at the Fox. If you want to do this, I recommend you make a reservation, as the place fills up quickly, and it's rather small. We found that the service was prompt, as there were many people there for the show, and the staff knows to ensure patrons are out in time for the show. The food was excellent and not just the ordinary pub food. Quirky ambiance and a decent value.
The Dark Room is always a great experience. The food is delicious, the service is lovely and there’s always good music playing. Also they have local artists featured with the art available for purchase. Always fun to see the art of the month.
Food was mediocre... we went there because it was conveniently located next to the Fox Theatre. The ambiance was nice with live jazz, but between the food and service, I don't think I'll ever go back.
Even a Monday night Birthday gathering can be special at the Dark Room. The Young Cats of Jazz Keith Bowman Quartet played “Happy Birthday” for my best friend. The food and drinks were good, but they have changed the menu. So, some of my favorite plates are no longer and my favorite dessert was unavailable. We still had a great time until they closed the doors.
Salad bland, overdressed. Menu limited to start and at 5 pm they literally had no bread for sandwiches
We went here during the week before a show at The Sheldon. This has to be one of the worst dining experiences we have had in awhile. The wine was not very good, we ordered a cheese board as a starter, but the server brought out my salad first, saying our starter would be out shortly. It arrived with no explanation and was mediocre at best. I ordered the Quinoa Veggie Bowl which was to have sautéed seasonal vegetables- they threw some green beans in, that weren’t sautéed, and called it good. It was laughable. No salt & pepper on the tables. The water served had a bad taste and no bottled water was offered. I could go on, but I will spare you the rest. Maybe this place is good for late night jazz, but I wouldn’t suggest it for dinner.
We went for brunch and it was not good. Worst shrimp & grits I have ever had. My dining partners meal looked like everything (eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes ) were fried in the same pan and over fried to boot. $16 way too much for 6 shrimp and basically tasteless polenta. $12 too much for a simple meat, eggs, potatoes, biscuit that I could have fixed at home with more appeal. Entertainers were way too loud for the setting.
This was one of the best restaurants we've eaten at in a long time. It's not big so it wasn't overwhelming and it was quiet. Service from Amanda was excellent, what a sweetie! The food was outstanding. My husband had the brisket sandwich and I had the grilled shrimp. Both were flavorful and tasty. We both had a house salad first and it was nice also, not over dressed and with different lettuces which made it interesting. My husband had the lemon pound cake for dessert and thought it was one of the best desserts he's ever eaten. He wished we could buy the cake in a store, but obviously you can't, which is what makes the dessert so special. It was just a nice meal, with nice food in a pleasant atmosphere. We will definitely go back and are talking about going for their brunch also.
Such a great find. So close to Powell Hall and The Fox that we will return in the future. Great menu and service was wonderful. Loved our night out!
Food was ok. My salmon was overcooked. They were already out of a dessert and it was only 6pm. The wine menu prices are confusing and they use it to their benefit. I had to have my bill adjusted twice.
Table near the piano was a little too loud for conversation. Otherwise, a great place. We will be back. Loved the tomato flatbread.
Great venue! The music was an extra bonus as the food and service was top notch. Make reservations as it's a small space!
It was a great atmosphere with amazing food. The waitress took care of us immediately and the food came out in a timely manner. It tasted great and the music was wonderful. My boyfriend loved it for his birthday. The food was a bit pricey, but overall a great place.
We were seated right next to the performance area. Once the band started playing we couldn't hear ourselves talk and needed to relocate. Otherwise, great location for all the events held at Powell, Fox, Sheldon.
Great pre theatre spot! Flatbreads were tasty and reasonable. Wine seems a little high - and not happy hour price because we sat at a table instead of the bar.
Convenient to the Fox Theater. Got an early reservation at The Dark Room, picked a primo spot in the Fox's parking garage, and headed next door for dinner. Service was excellent. Justin, our waiter was quick to fill our water glasses- even though the bottle was on our table. A couple cocktails and light meal, and over to the Fox for a great show in a stunning theater. Great date night. We've been married 28 years, but keep dating- lesson to fellow husbands ;-)
It was a date night for my husband and I and our first time going to the Dark Room. Won’t be our last. Food was great, music was great and our server was excellent.
The music food and wine is always a wonderful surprise. The ambiance and staff are very welcoming. They were changing the menu, so they had no beef or mushrooms. I was forced to try something new and that was great in the end. They took a port I like off the wine list. I like port with dessert. I hope they put another port on the wine list because I love the desserts.
We had a good time, but I was a little disappointed in the food — mostly because our first experience, New Year’s Eve, was so very excellent. Will definitely try you again. Things just seemed a little off for the four of us. (Wish you had music earlier on Saturday nights).
Exceklent atmosphere and the music was amazing! The food is good and they have a nice wine selection. Definitely need to make a reservation though, as there is not alot of space. The theater space is very cozy, so you should check out thier box office.
Overall, our dining experience was great. There was a slight issue with the service. We ordered two bloody mary's and they didn't arrive until our food was served. We enjoyed the music but it was entirely too loud. We couldn't even hear each other talk. The food was great. We ordered the steak and eggs and the frittata. We will be back.
I love Jazz, I love food & I love a good drink. Unfortunately the service was very slow and not attentive and to top it off the food came out cold. The music was great and the ambiance was fantastic. I wished that this place would have been great. If you are looking to have a drink and listen to jazz it would be a good fit, however expect to only have one drink, they will not be back to get you a second.
Everything was wonderful love it see you next Saturday night
I knew my time was short which is why I made a reservation. I knew what I wanted and ordered it straight away. It took 20 minutes for a bowl of soup. And it was tasteless. Bland. Boring.
We enjoyed our first experience at The Dark Room; good food and a perfect spot before a show at Powell Hall.
My Husband and I had tickets for the Fox and had a reservation before the show. Perfect start for an evening at the Fox. The food was perfect and the portions were just the right size. We had dessert and the lemon pound cake was dry, but the lemon curd was very tasty. I had strawberry shortcake and that was ok, not great. I would recommend and visit again. I understand the brunch is wonderful.
I love everything about the Dark Room. We usually have everything perfect there, but the food this time was not what I expected. Especially the shrimp wrap hardly had any flavor, and the bread was extremely dry. Drinks are great and the atmosphere was fantastic. Food was pretty bad. Thank you.
The service was great. Our waitress was friendly. The food was delicious and the entertainment was enjoyable. We will return.
Happy hour jazz pianist, Ptah Williams, was great. Hot pretzel with dipping cheese sauce went well with cocktails. Followed by turkey cobb salad and Steak and Mushroom Flat Bread. and finished with Strawberry Shortcake. good way to end the week, good food and drink and great music and a great value.
I loved the ambiance, the jazz band was amazing as well as the food. I really appreciated this intimate spot.
Wonderful night at The Dark Room. Service was great, food was fantastic and the music was perfect. Bill B
The live music, ambiance, and service were all terrific! The food on the other hand, not so much. The appetizers, sides and desserts were all really good but the main entree missed the mark for both of our meals. Her chicken and my pork both lacked flavor and were dry.
We had an amazing time, it was our first visit and we loved the music and ambiance!!
We will definitely come back next time we are in St. Louis! The host and hostess were extremely accommodating and friendly THANK YOU for making this a memorable experience :)
Great atmosphere, outstanding music , friendly staff.
Very enjoyable experience. Amanda was our server and she was excellent. Great recommendation on the wine and pleasant chatting with her during service. Food was very good. Did not care for some of the tomatoes in the salad, but otherwise great! We'll certainly return.
