About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Innovative
Mark Raffan, former chef proprietor of the prestigious "Gravetye Manor" comes to Horsted Keynes via his successful regeneration of the Red Lion at Chelwood Gate. He and his brigade of talented young chefs bring elegant yet relaxed fine dining to the welcoming atmosphere of The Crown.

With comforting real fires in winter, and a glorious patio garden overlooking the village cricket green in summer, the Crown offers an idyllic setting in which to enjoy quality food based on locally sourced seasonal ingredients prepared
by the former holder of a coveted Michelin star.

Mark's background in some of the UK's most distinguished eateries, including periods at Le Gavroche in London and the Waterside Inn at Bray, as well as years working as private chef to King Hussein of Jordan, means he is amply qualified to deliver stunning food in this charming location.

A very pleasant setting, good service and great food. We all had the roast beef, which was delicious and melted in the mouth. The accompanying vegetables were beautifully cooked and the overall presentation of the food was very good. Not the cheapest restaurant to eat but worth every penny. We will definitely be visiting again.

We had dinner there on a weekday evening. It was quiet, but all tables still ready and beautifully presented. We were given our choice of tables and drinks brought quickly. One of our party made a particularly awkward request for their meal (which we realised later could have been done much more simply, but she just managed to make it complicated). Nevertheless, starters were all delicious - the goat cheese tart being highly recommended! Mains were perfect...apart from the confusion over the awkward request. That issue however, was dealt with with such courtesy and generosity by the staff - it was obvious that nothing would do except that the customer have exactly the meal they wanted. Even the chef popped out later to make sure that things had been sorted out to our satisfaction. You go a long way these days to find people so concerned with giving great service. The baked cod was the best meal the person who had it had tasted in a long time. The belly pork with black pudding bon-bons was amazing. The crackling literally melted in your mouth. After a short break, we decided that we would have to force dessert down. Everything else had been so good we couldn't leave without trying the rest of the menu! The cheese selection was a nice serving of five local cheeses with crackers and fruit. The poached rhubarb, with orange segments, orange mascarpone cream, and gingerbread was amazing. Best dessert in ages. Whenever we've asked locally for recommendations to eat, no-one ever mentions The Crown. Now we know why. They're trying to keep it to themselves! It was, without any doubt, one of the nicest meals we have had in a very long time. Intelligent serving - attentive but not intrusive - made it a meal to remember. We will definitely be going back. Thanks to all at The Crown. You are an excellent team...keep it up!

We had been to the Crown for Sunday lunch which was great.so we went last Friday to celebrate our 50th. Wedding Anniversary. Food excellent. Service could have been a wee bit better. We had to ask for cutlery which should have already been at the two place settings. The cost is bit on the pricy side but, the food quality , presentation and taste - first class. We had hoped to book for Christmas Day lunch on to learn this is the only day the restaurant is closed. All in all a wonderful experience and fitting venue for our Wedding Anniversary.

Went on a Tuesday night with a customer who was with us for a couple of days. It was so good that we went again the next night. Quality of the food was outstanding. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.
