Each dish we had was almost good, but not really. We had: 1) macaroni and pork belly which was kind of grainy. The pork belly was ok, but the macaroni was not enjoyable. 2) Bone Marrow, which was pretty good, but they give you these thin, flimsy pita triangles, instead of crostinis. That kind of ruined it for me. Way too much bone marrow with nothing to balance it. Only sauce to cover it up. 3) Prime Rib which came with this sour cream that the tiniest amount of horseradish. If I didn't ask for actual horseradish, my girlfriend would have been very disappointed. 4) Bone-in Ribeye, cooked med rare, but was quite tough. For a $65 steak, I expected it to be a lot better. 5) Creamed Spinach, was swimming in a dish with watery cream. Each time I went for a bite, I would have to let it hover over the plate until the excess liquid stopped dripping. 6) Butternut squash, was ok.
As for the service, our waiter was very nice, and knew about the wines, but there were only 3 other tables in there, and yet it took 10 minutes for us to be greeted. Towards the end of the meal, we got our food wrapped to go, and I was ready for dessert. But instead the waiter just gave us the check. It was also my birthday, which I had stated in the reservation, so I was hoping to do a little something with a candle. Clearly, no one looked at the notes on the reservation. Hell, we had to be greeted by the busboy, because there was no one else tending to the front. As a waiter myself, I understand that everyone gets busy, and we all make mistakes, so I try to cut them some slack. But this was just a lack of effort. With a slow night like that, where there are only 4 tables in the whole restaurant; everything should be on point. I had high hopes, but it was just disappointing. And yet we still tipped over 15%. It could've been 30% though, because I recognize when a waiter does a great job.
The interior of the restaurant is very nice, service was sub par but only because there was 1 hostess/server on the floor. There was 1 lady who was doing it all. We did not see anybody else on the floor serving/helping with the food, taking orders, seating people, etc.
The food. meh. We got the clam chowder as the lobster bisque was not available. (why? it's on the menu ) and it wasn't sold out as we got there for lunch at noon. The soup was fine. I got the beef rigatoni and i couldn't finish half of it. It was super rich, salty and i couldn't find much beef. My friend had the shrimp angel hair pasta and she said "it's mediocre, could be way better." Not really sure how you can mess up shrimp angel hair pasta.
Overall i was super excited when this restaurant opened, but now that I've had a chance to try it...i'm sorely disappointed. Possibly might give it one more chance and try different options. I guess we'll see.
Happy hour price is reasonable. But make to sit by the bar area.
The restaurant is worth a visit if you like to dine in RWC. However, the food is quite expensive. 3 of us had dinner with 2 drinks each and it was $420 (including tip). The steaks are in the $60 - $125 range and don't come with any sides or sauces. They really don't do anything to make you feel like you are special even though you are paying a lot.
The staff is nice but they have little or no training - they don't know much about steak, whisky or wine. Nearly every question we asked our waiter led to a waiting period where he went and polled other staff and then came back with no answer. The atmosphere is fine but really nothing special for such a high-priced menu. The steaks are quite good but, unlike most other steakhouses, they are much more done than what you specify. My medium porterhouse ($68) was well done. My friend's medium-rare porterhouse was medium well. The side dishes are fine but not spectacular. The steak was very tasty though.
We enjoyed the appetizers a lot. The bone marrow was very generous with the marrow but included only a few tiny pieces of flatbread. We had to ask for more bread twice.
I imagine this place will get more organized. But, if they don't make more effort to love, honor and educate their guests, they probably won't make it. Most of the problems revolve around the fact that the staff doesn't seem to know what they are selling. It reminds me of a time when I went to test drive a Porsche SUV and I asked the salesman what he drives - a Honda Fit. A purveyor of steak, whisky and wine needs to have knowledge, love and experience for the products.
It was fine. The restaurant is nice. The food was pretty good. The Brussels sprouts could have been way better. Roasted longer. The waiter was fine. He let us know he was newer. It was obvious.
At short notice, needed a booking for 17 persons for a business dinner setting. Everything worked out very well. Everybody at one table, nice setting in the lounge area, next to the fountain, very good food and wine and attentive service. Though it comes at an expense, it is a great experience and was much appreciated by the invited business partners.
Courthouse 2021 seems to want to be Alexander's or Fleming's. Its menu suggests that, and its prices do too. The food is comparable to Fleming's, but not nearly as good as Alexander's. And the ambiance is worse than both, with screaming babies in a relatively small space. For me to come back here, either the quality of experience has to improve, or the prices have to come down. $150 per person for a good steak accompanied by screaming babies. Me thinks not. But if it were $75 per person? Me thinks yes. Or maybe just ditch the old-style steakhouse image, and offer steaks plus lighter fare, like a cross between Pacific Catch and Paul Martin's. Think about it.
We went here for the second time. First time they had recently opened. Service was poor. But this time service was great. Ask to be serviced by Mr. Lopez. Food was great.
Worst food ever!
We went on Valentine's Day and were not warned abou the pre- fix menu- did not mention it on open table. Not only was it extremely over priced, but the menu was limited and substitutions not allowed. The seafood risotto was too heavy. Will not be going back
I don’t usually submit a review after only one visit, but I was impressed enough with Courthouse 2021 to do so. We went for their special Valentines Day dinner and had a delightful evening.
The restaurant consists of two main dining area, a front room and a larger main dining area, with a live fireplace in the latter. The ambience is refined elegance, white table cloths, candles on the table, etc.
We were a little concerned when we sat down (in the front room) and their was a boisterous group at the bar, which is in the main dining room - not exactly our idea of a romantic evening! But one of the waitstaff raced over and magically rolled a sliding glass door to partition the two rooms, and the decibels dropped to tranquil levels. Even when a group of about a dozen occupied a table in the front room, it never got too loud.
Service was outstanding- charming waitress who was knowledgeable about the menu and the wine, prompt attention to everything.
We had the spinach salad and clam chowder for starters. The salad was fine, if nothing special. The chowder was excellent, with the obvious use of high quality, fresh ingredients. I was a little surprised that bread or rolls weren’t offered, but that’s no big deal.
Our mains were an outstanding seafood risotto and a perfectly cooked enormous slab of prime rib. We couldn’t finish either (but gleefully did the next day!) as we left room for desserts, a raspberry/chocolate lava cake and a butterscotch cake with ice cream. Perfect.
Decent selection of wines by the glass at reasonable prices.
It was a bit pricey at $80 per person - I have had similar prix fixe meals in similarly elegant restaurants in the Bay Area - but I guess there was a bit of a Valentine’s Day surcharge, and overall it was worth it. Will definitely go back to Courthouse 2021 - as long as we can sit in the front room.
Service was excellent. Food was ok nothing great specially when you factor in their price. Overpriced food for what they offer. Everything including drinks and appetizers are overpriced. Understandably the place is never full. Lots of empty tables.
Great place for dinner. We had the most attentive and friendly waiter! He made sure we had the best experience. My fish was delicious. The cease was good and a generous amount. My husband felt his aged steak wasn’t worth the price. Great dessert!!
Need more variety to choose from and not run out of food
It was a bit disappointing as they did not have a meal on the menu that I really wanted to have for dinner
As usual, wonderful food. Met my husband last minute for an early lunch. Our server was the least friendly we’ve had here so far though. Very little engagement with us while at our table. We’d say thank you! when food or drinks were served and she’d walk away without a word or smile or anything. Multiple times. We ate at 11:30am when they open for lunch and it was mostly empty so I don’t believe she was rushed...? The manager Nicole on the other hand is AMAZING! And she remembers us and we now have a “regular” table. I recommend highly. And the other servers we’ve had have all been top notch, up there with Nicole and look forward to being back soon!
The food was good but overpriced. $18 for one crab cake is a bit much. It was also very loud and hard to hear each other talk.
Great dinner spot. The owner goes out of his way to make sure your meal is a pleasure. The entire staff is very attentive and friendly. Can't wait to go back!
Drinks and great wine selection was good. The prime rib I had was perfectly cooked the way I liked . Medium.
I had a great time! It was a light Sat evening and the ambiance was nice and quiet. I enjoyed staring at the decor and the arches and lighting. The food was delicious. We ordered truffle fries. creamed spinich which was unique because it wasn't puree! Also ordered a dry aged porterhouse steak and scallops. It was enough to feed 3. Good value because of the work it takes for dry aging. I enjoyed my experience.
we were the only people there for the whole time; makes me wonder how long they will last. it was good though and I'd go back.
Our waiter Antonio was very attentive and knowledgeable. I ordered the filet and Asiago mashed potatoes, steak was a perfect med-rare and the potatoes were well seasoned. My date had the risotto with scallops also cooked and seasoned very well. I will definitely visit again if I find myself in Redwood City again.
The Courthouse 2021 never disappoints! Food choices include excellent steaks and unique takes in comfort foods. Leave room for one of their delicious desserts, too.
The restaurant is very pretty inside and the service was okay, but the food was not worthy of the price. We tried the brussel sprouts appetizer and no one in our party could eat it. They seemed burnt and the balsamic glaze was way too overpowering to the point that it was inedible. The filet was mediocre for the price. The creamed spinach and the whipped potatoes had no taste and were very bland. One person got the fried chicken plate which they enjoyed, but that was it. They were out of all but two desserts so we passed on trying anything. Overall, not worth the price.
I feel like it’s still early to judge them even though they have been open for a while.
Two waiters for an 80% full restaurant at lunch pn Thursday before a holiday... yoi can feel that the waiter disnt have time to field questions.
The pasta/mushroom dish was spicy even though the menu did not show any spicy ingrediants.
The short ribs did not appear freshly made.
Pork belly burger (per waiter recommendation) was super fattier than I would think accetable.
Overall, just subpar and quuitr dissapppinting.
The food was flavorful but the service was incredibly disorganized. Food came out of sequence, wrong, very late, or not at all. Every course was served without silverware or serving utensils. This restaurant has a serious organizational problem. Not at all what one expects at a restaurant at this price point.
Surprisingly good food - and we are pretty picky. Most other reviews are very good, some are not; it's hard to understand what the complaints are about. Some unusual dishes are particularly good, such as the octopus appetizer. We tried several dishes, and several side dishes, all were very good. The waiter was great. Even their least expensive chardonnay bottle was very good. The staff were very helpful with an issue that was our own fault. We will be sure to go there again soon.
Lousy service, automatic 22% tips for party of 5 with no service whatsoever. No worth the money.
Very busy, seemed short staffed took forever to get food and forgot a dish.. very cold draft through the center.
Excellent food, excellent service ... the restaurant it’s so beautiful😋
Food & service were great!! Seating was a bit too tight. Noise level was high and hard to carry on conversation across the table. Wish there was kids menu
We don't eat out too often, but prior to going to a concert in Downtown Redwood City, we decided to splurge by dining at Courthouse 2021. We knew the restaurant from its days as Mandaloun and were pleasantly surprised to see that the interior had not change much. The addition of leather wall coverings (like what a comfy Chesterfield sofa might looks like) are a nice addition and certainly helped with noise. Our server was very nice, but a bit too casual - I don not like being referred to as "you guys", as in "you guys ready to order a drink?". He also seemed to be quite in a rush, even though it was not very busy for a Tuesday evening. I wanted to tell him, "Dude, just relax!"Our dinners were very good my husband had the filet mignon, which was perfectly prepared, and I had the fried chicken board, which was a gorgeous presentation and had all the sides he and I wanted to share. I especially like the cream spinach, as the leaves were left whole, rather than chopped, before being sauteed, and the cream with light with just the right amount of garlic. Overall, an enjoyable, though expensive, dining experience. The prices seem more in line with SF, or for the expense account crowd. Will we go back? perhaps for small plates at the bar after a movie.
We can't say enough good things about this restaurant. It was a perfect evening.
Very inconsistent service.
Too many waiters involved.
The sides were warm, but the $68.00 steak was lukewarm...
Finally, Espresso was not warm.
3rd visit with mixed results.
Not going back.
While the ambiance is nice and the staff friendly, the food is average and massively overpriced .
Staff was nice, but service was a bit off. Starters came out fast enough, but had to ask numerous times for plates. Main dishes took too long to come out. Food was really good. I think they are still learning. I will definitely return.
Great location for a birthday! Unique food options.
The food was very good. Service took a while at the beginning but improved notably throughout the evening.
The waiter was really slow to take the order and the service was poor to say the least. We split the bill and he overcharged one of the credit cards. He failed to communicate it to us and I had to go up to the register after waiting for about 10 minutes to ask what was going on. He proceeded to write down credit card numbers on a notepad (unacceptable!) as this was the only way for us to be able to leave and make it back to work. I was hoping to get some kind of a follow up from the restaurant, but nothing
The food was good with enough variety for big group of people. The server was rushing but he calmed downs but later. I think they were under staffed.
When we were ready to order coffee. Were told they were waiting for coffee bean delivery...unheard of!
In general, food was good and decor was nice, but the service and the speed of food coming out can be improved.
