The Cooper Ratings and Reviews
WE come often to The Cooper. Last Friday was disappointing, only because of the
inexperienced servers. We never received bread until we asked twice. My husband and
the other gentleman shared a large steak. They placed it on the table. We had to ask them
to take it to the kitchen to be split onto two plates. The servers were not at all attentive and
seemed like it was their first night. They took our plates away and then waited and waited
for her to come back and ask if we wanted coffee.
We will still come back because we love the food, but the servers need to be better trained.
Dinner at The Cooper is always good...only a couple of negatives this time. We had a 6:45 reservation, but we not seated until after 7:00. I had a special duck & mushroom dish...and I had a very hard time finding any duck. My wife had Monkfish and the portion was very small. We'll try again, but this was somewhat disappointing.
Restaurant very busy and noise level very high. Manager asked us to sit outside on the patio under heat lamps ...which worked out ok and gave us a table immediately instead of waiting past our reservation time. That way we could enjoy our meal and have a conversation In a quieter atmosphere.
We always enjoy the food and the tapas apps and salads are really good and fun to share.
Scrumptious food. We had the beer battered mussels to start which were delightful. Plentiful and very hearty. My gf had the fish which melted in your mouth. I had the Denver steak and it was tender and tasty, very good. The sweet potato salad was a delicious surprise that we both enjoyed. We heartily recommend Cooper's.
The restaurant is very comfortable, somewhat like eating in your living room. Our server was very attentive, although she failed to bring the salad we ordered. When the restaurant was busy it was fairly loud and somewhat difficult to hold a conversation. The presentation of the food first rates, however the food looked better than it tasted and was pricey. Next time, we will either sit in the bar area or check it out the lunch .
A wonderful dinner as it was the last time. Like the eclectic menu with options for every mood. Filet was terrific; salmon fantastic as were one of our diners entrée salads and our apps / small plates. Friendly, professional staff. Always stop here when we are in the area.
The food, atmosphere, and service were absolutely great at The Cooper. I had the rack of lamb (one of the best things I’ve ever had). My wife ordered the vegetarian dish which was delicious even if you’re not an herbivore. The staff was great and very energetic and attentive, especially to some of my wife’s food allergies. We sat outside on the patio which was very nice. They had plenty of heaters despite it being cold outside so it was great.
Only had two slight complaints:
1) I would not recommend the ceviche, which is a dish that I typically love.
2) I got the carrot cake in a jar for dessert (which was really good), but we had to get home for the babysitter so I ordered it to go so they charged me $2.00 for the lid to the mason jar which, quite frankly, was a little nickel-and-dimey of them considering the $11 price tag on the dessert and the large amount of money we spent on the overall bill.
Don’t want to seem critical because it wad a great place and we will definitely return in the future.
I've been to The Cooper many times and the food is always good -- not amazing, but reliable.
When we visited this night, it was busy, and we sat by the kitchen, which wasn't great. It was VERY loud, like can't have a conversation loud. In addition, our server was a bit overwhelmed. We had to wait quite a while for our drinks, for her to return after our food arrived, and for the check. Each time she stopped by she was in a hurry. I will probably wait a bit before I return. :(
We had to reject the first table offered (alongside the bar) to get an enjoyable spot. The Korean spare ribs special appetizer was a delicious departure from nouveau popular fare. For the main course, (1) Murray’s half chicken makes for dependable comfort food, and (2) I enjoyed immensely the special shrimp and scallops ravioli; the cream tomato sauce was well balanced. For my taste, we probably should have passed on the toasted lemon cake with a generous side portion pomegranate gelato. The cake just didn’t do it for me. The gelato was more like ice cream and the pomegranate flavor should have been sharper. OpenTable ApplePay would not process despite 5 or 6 tries, delaying leaving, but that is on OpenTable, Apple, the Bank,,or the internet— not on The Cooper.
How disappointing our meal was. The Cooper is part of the Max Restaurant Group in CT. Our meals at Max restaurants have ALWAYS been excellent. And we have had great experiences at the Cooper in past years. But our most recent dinner was fair at best. Service was sooooo slow, it took forever to get the meal. The pears on the pear salad were hard. One of our friend's lamb chops were almost raw in the middle and cold, she had to send them back to the kitchen. On the positive side, the burrata and prosciutto salad got rave reviews and the trout was quite good. After 2.5 hours we passed on dessert because we didn't want to wait another half hour for it. My husband was still hungry when we left the restaurant. Where is the owner and management of the restaurant? Why aren't they upholding standards for excellent food and service as experienced in sister restaurants up north? Just sayin'......I can't recommend this restaurant as the value for the price is not there.
Although we have had several good meals at The Cooper in the past, this one was a disaster.
The pear salad had a pear that was so hard it could not be cut with a knife. (The waiter agreed. When the bill came, we were still charged for it. We asked about that, and the charge was removed.) The main course took a long time to come, and then the trout was overcooked. The coffee was so weak we didn't bother drinking it.
It was nice to see a specific dish devoted to a vegan diet, though I somehow thought there might be more choices. My vegan dish was quite good and inventive (cauliflower, toasted quinoa, broccoli rabe, polenta cakes, with a smear of butternut squash.) The other people in our party loved the fish that was served. Convivial atmosphere, attentive waiter, though he forgot to bring more soda water for me (I was the only non-drinker in the party and it helps when you can get a little extra attention - love the fact that it is provided for free but hope they can remember to serve it.)
I have dined here three or four times before. While it looks the same, with great service and generous well priced cocktails, the kitchen is not turning out the same high quality food. One of the appetizers (falafel balls) was simply inedible. The other dishes were pedestrian, by which I mean merely pleasant but without character or distinction. I will give it a few months and try again, hoping for a return to its more excellent prior efforts.
The Cooper was just OK. The food was good. Our waitress had a bit of a negative attitude. Our friends ordered Cranberry Juice and club soda. The first one was fine. The second had alcohol. Both of them do not drink. When they told the waitress she challenged them by smelling the drink. and said there was no alcohol. They both could taste it and felt the effects. She should have just given them new drinks. Overall not a good experience.
